Autopsy Some promising signs but Hawks too good

I didn't mind him there at all, as Ashep wrote, at least he had a crack and made our forward line a bit more dynamic. But his absence was very noticable down back.
With both Melican and Blakey playing tight, we lacked the third tall defender to intercept. Unless Hamling or Francis can come in and do the job, McCartin is needed back more than forward.

Think he could be our swingman type of player once the other forwards return. The best case scenario he kills it up fwd & worst case he returns to defence where he's dominated in the past.

Cox mentioned he wants Blakey to play 'tall' since he's 197cm, my issue is he doesn't have natural 1v1 defensive instincts. Maybe it develops? I prefer seeing him play as the 3rd tall who comes in to help others through his speed & leaping ability, whether it be to spoil or take a mark.

He also said he wants McCartin up fwd to help our other fwds with their running patterns & competitiveness. It's a well thought out position change, will it be effective for the team? Time will tell...
Agree strongly with your evaluation. My dream is that Edwards comes good as second lockdown KPD and allows Tom to be forward or interceptor or swingman.
Agree re Blakey.
Lastly I would see that as the coach's role. Tom setting an example? 🤔

I suggest you watch some more of Florent's footy before making such ill-considered comments. Florent copped it huge for that shanked free. A free that he won with a great tackle. Yes it resulted in a goal but it's no worse than McInerney shanking another very gettable kick for goal. A shank that cost us a goal and also gave the ball back to the Hawks.

Mistakes in defence always look worse than mistakes anywhere else. Truth is we got well beaten in the midfield

Florent is certainly not disposable.

Florent only needed to shank it after turning it over up the ground. Come off it he was beyond shocking. JMac was bad and I’d prefer them swapping get Florent out of the defence it’s never going to work there

Could be a utility

Saw that too. Florent was sorely crushed by the mistake. A few leaders needed to step up and get around him.

Luke Ablett wanted to die after a similar cockup in the '05 GF but the boys got around him and gave him the confidence to feel he could redeem himself.
The Nogy F up was right in front of me , i could see it happening , so good it didn't matter . It was great play by Cousins as well to read it early

They did so not sure what you point is.
My point was the same as the point Bedford made. On the tv it looked like no one went to him.

Regardless of whether anyone did or did not get around him. My point and Bedford's point was that "on the tv it looked like no one went to him"

It's quite possible we both might have missed it on TV, but whether my point is valid or not, it was very clearly elucidated, so how could you not be sure what that point was?

As i said on tv , some don't read at times , me included

King and the rest of them are reactive mouthpieces. But they get paid way too much, IMHO, and they don't offer any real insight, or a different observation, or anything we can't come up with while watching the game.

And don't get me started on the hype merchants they call commentators. I really really really dislike Brayshaw and his blokey style. BT was bad enough but Brayshaw is so over the top with his hype style it makes me want to curl up and die from cringe. Oh and did I mention his blokisms?

JB is an absolute turd , BT is just a f wit

David King is literally the worst footy pundit out there. So reactionary week to week when it comes to teams. Dunno why we people listen to him about his Mccartin comments
I agree about King. His commentary on Fagan in particular last year was just way off the mark and offensive.

However he was right about our setup on Friday night. How many intercept marks did we take? How many contested marks did we take? Why the F was McInerney rucking at times? We were losing the contest and needed to generate attack out of defence but Blakey was too bloody busy pretending to be Andrew Dunkley (he's too skinny and narrow in the shoulders to be a KPD). Clearly we were one tall defender short.

But yes, King is a tosser and most times he is way off the mark. Just not this time.

If Cox wants Blakey to be a KPD, then I have concerns over his ability to coach.

He's one of our biggest attacking weapons and we want to blunt that by making him run with an oppo tall. Sure, every player needs to defend at times and needs to get some training in that, but can we stop trying to get by with half measures.

If we need a 3rd KPD, try Hamling. If we get KPFs available, put McCartin back until we can afford not to.

He's coached 1 game ghu

What's your point?

If he wants Blakey to be a KPD, it's a mistake.

Unrelated to whether he's coached 1 or 1000.

Least he’s trying something what would be worse would be doing the same thing that was dismantled in the last half a year last season. Did it work not sure but give it more than a week. Similarly players should be given more than a week, all for shifting the magnets insider the team but give the side a few weeks

Don't worry about it mate

I mean people lost their marbles that Horse doesn’t change anything (me included as the warning signs were there). Cox comes in tries a few things and it results in one loss (albeit not a thrashing) and people still blow a casket. Either be patient or don’t whinge in the first place. It’s like the one ruck thing, we hardly know if it’s successful played a ruck half fit at best. If we are 3-3 after 6 rounds it’s a good enough start we lost to a good Hawks side we won’t be the last to lose to them

He could play Papley in the ruck and you could say "at least he's trying something".

I'd say its easier to judge the ruck strategy based on Grundy's past performance as a solo ruck giving us more than 1 game sample size but agree with your point about people wanted to throw the toys out because they can

I hope you're not pretending that I'm one of the ones who complain about change for the sake of it. I wanted several changes over the off season, some of which seem to have occurred.

I don't need to be patient to know that Blakey is an attacking half back who should not be converted into a KPD. This is already obvious based on the contribution he's made in recent years, we don't need to "wait and see".

It wouldn’t be the strategy I’d go for but doing what we did in the last 3 months last year was never working to the end goal. Something had to chance. Patience.
