Early on we weren't slipping and later on Tigers weren't.
Disagree. I recall a lot of slipping early. To the point that when a player slipped in a contest and the commentators said that he'd be disappointed with himself because it looks like perfect conditions out there, I actually said what the bloody hell have you been watching, players are slipping everywhere.

Yep, heaps of slipping on the near wing in the first quarter. Though most were Carlton player.

We had 4 players slip in the one passage of play.

I thought Silvagni and Cowan stood up with Weitering in defense.
Hollands, Haynes and Saad need to get better quick. McGov should retire.

On last nights performance Haynes could be holding GOV's hand.

Gov just isn't a defender - his first qtr was great actually as an attacking HB. His kicking was excellent early.

One out he's a liability, more often than not going to ground.

SOS was OK - his lack of pace when isolated a worry.

Our defence across the ground was so poor - in each & every contest.

Is it? It is coached? If it's an execution issue then why do we keep doing it and have been for 2 years?

If a group isn't confident, cohesive or trust what we are doing we play simple bombing football. That is on the coaches
They don’t believe in what Voss is selling. It shows.
They don’t trust each other or the gameplan.

I thought Hollands was ok but he needs to get more involved and accumulate in that half back role. Thats what he's there for. Can't be a 15-20 possesion player.

Thats something we lack. No Newman. Williams forward. Doc seems banished from the backline. Gov, Saad, Cowan all can't accumulate.

Players missing easy marks, targets, tackles or lack of intent has nothing to do with coaching
Isn't the job of a coach to get the best out of their players? To teach them how to tackle, mark, hit targets? To help them have intent, to set expectations? To help put the players in situations where they can learn what to do and how to be execute?

You cant say it has nothing to do with coaching!! It's a coaches job to have them ready, and to address deficiencies.

Yes the coaches can't do it for them so at minimum it's a shared responsibility but to say it has nothing to so with coaching is ignoring the core responsibilities of a coach.

Does anyone know what he's selling?

I have no idea what our plan is.

Surely its not just "winning the contest", as David King keeps saying (rightly it seems).

Last night was as good an example of "losing the contest" as I can recall.

Smarter people than me keep telling me sides now pick us apart so easily and Voss is easy to coach against.

I will say this, Lucas Camporeale did fine, he's a debutant and was present early but faded, probably because those around him let him down. I would persist with him for now and makes me excited to see Ben more.

Motlop on the other hand....ugh Durdin and Orazio better be fit soon would rather them than that horrific effort.

Only one game but safe to say Carlton won't be winning the Premiership anytime soon ... or make Top 4

Poor skills
Poor recruiting
Poor fitness trainers
Poor culture
Poor attitude
Poor Coach
Poor admin
Poor game/player selection committee
Injury prone

To win a flag ... you need to tick most if not all the boxes. Carlton aren't ticking any.

*Too harsh?

Don’t know about too harsh. Might be a bit too simple. This is a deep rooted problem that the club has. Well beyond surface level imo

I'm a bit meh about this one.
Yes, we should've won and won easily (8+ goals was my benchmark), but sometimes it just doesn't happen.
This may be the Tigers only win for the year. It won't be our only loss, but it also likely won't really change what we achieve this year. It's game 1 of a 23 game season.
Lions lost their 1st 3 last year and were 2-4 after 6 rounds, with their only wins against North and an average Demons.
Those first 3 losses were against the teams who finished 8th, 9th and 10th. They also drew with Adelaide and barely beat WC.

We don't get too high and we don't get too low. Not an ideal start to the season, but we move on.

WRONG. Only someone with an agenda could possibly think that.

These players have shown they can hit targets and tackle. So the inconsistent and poorly applied attitude towards it...? Fundamentals work and letting standards in those areas slip...? COACHING

The team is a house of cards as soon as a slight gust of pressure comes their way they crumble … they are the complete opposite of the guy coaching them … it’s bizarro stuff

On TV the turf looked soft and loose. Lots of kicked up clumps. Maybe some of our guys had the wrong stops in.
Probably should've been addressed at quarter time though, if that's the case.

It's a big concern. Dominant early, looks like we put the cue in the rack. Richmond kept coming, we remained complacent thinking it was just going to happen. They built up a head of steam, became obvious they were going to keep coming, and that complacency turned into panic.

Someone mentioned it earlier, too many players waiting for things to happen, not enough willing to make it happen. Oh for Nic Newman last night.

Despite all that, we had more than enough chances late to win that game. 1 goal 6 in the last, a number of them very gettable. Could be early season cobwebs but if that level of panic under pressure remains, we're in a for very long season.

You can't blame coaching for missing easy chest marks or a 5 metre handball, a 20 metre switch kick to an open player

Voss is responsible for many aspects, but not the above
Attitude, confidence, FUNDAMENTALS. Those mistakes are a reflection of training standards. Which reflects on the guys running the training sessions......
