Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but on face value we're going with Steele, Lobster and Sincs in the midfield. Monty named at HB is a Sincs light option.
Sub is probably Hastie to inject some energy in the 2nd half, and Schoony will be used to add height and pump the ball out of the defensive half. I feel a rope-a-dope gameplan cooking.

If Sinclair plays mid then Jones will be sub. We need 7 defenders with LOC wing

We're clearly a little concerned with Adelaide's height with Arie playing. Also expecting Marshall to heavily play forward.

I'm pretty disappointed Jones has been picked over Boxshall. Jones didn't get a game in preseason but somehow gets up for round 1?

Agree with others to say if Keeler doesn't get a gig with King, Sharman and Owens out, plus Marshall under an injury cloud, as well as missing Howard (plus Membrey and Battle gone), I'm not sure the coaching group rate him that highly. This was the prime time to play him if ever.
I think we need the experience with our outs and how young our team is, carrying this many inexperienced players means we're fighting an uphill battle already. Boxhall has looked good but obviously proved nothing at VFL level yet, he'll get his chance.

It must be incredibly crushing for a kid to have dreams of a home debut only for your coach to pretty much say we would rather play short of key position players than play you.
Still a couple of early chances for a home debut thanks to the AFL’s “Fook the Saints” scheduling policy.

I am my usual nerves before Round 1. Tough assignment with a young team interstate. At worst I want us to pressure and compete. And show some game style and structure. Too many times I have seen us looking lost in Adelaide games over the years.

And at best, we find Adelaide not in form and we can settle into the game. The new guys showing something and improvement from our 2-4 year players. Don’t want a repeat of the Port practice game.

Am sure we are very much a work in progress. But if they keep working in the game and persisting I will be relatively happy.

Aaaand we can leave it there l think. Keep it going via PM if you must.
What? Oh, I see. There was once a Little Golden Book (a series of children's books for those youger than 100) that was titled, "Nobody wants to play with Smelly Pussy", complete with a picture of a kitten, with stink lines coming from it.

It was the heartbreaking story of an abandoned kitten who'd fallen into a rubbish bin. None of the other kittens would play with it because it smelled. I believe the book is now a highly valuable collectors' item.

On A graders, we have Wilkie, Sinclair and Marshall who are all A graders. Probably not got absolute elite but all are top tier by position. Nas is going to be running close to elite soon by the look of his trajectory.

Sinclair was still top 20 for average possessions despite a slow start last season. Top 25 for totals.

Marshall had the most disposals by any ruck in the league, 11th in total hit outs.

Wilkie the 5th most marks by any player in the league, 8th in intercepts, 9th in 1 percenters, 32nd in contested marks etc.
I really feel we have more than what people think , as you say Marshall , Sinclair , Wilkie are all elite in there position but so are Steele , Hill and even Higgins if you are talking small forward stats.
Last season he nearly averaged 2 goals a game and at times looked like our only forward who looks like kicking a goal.
Nas just needs to serve up what he last year to show he is one of the best running halfbacks around and Macrae will most probably win of fairest and best this year , amazing however this guy was given a raw deal from the dogs last year after being one of the best mids for years.

A lot to play out this year and guys like King , Owens could easily be thrown into the A grade status if they produce.

Having a fit and firing Macrae , King , Henry , Owens , Nas , Wilson will test every team.

Yeah, Hill seems to play wing starting off a high HFF. There are pretty much 6 wingmen these days with players rolling back from the forward line and shuffling up from the back flanks.
Whenever I ask myself why they haven't come up with new terms to describe field positions, I say it because it is always evolving so they default to the old expressions. I mean what does CHF, C and CHB mean anymore?

Challenge question

How many distinct 'positions' are there on an a football field these days? I mean regularly enough used that a name for them makes sense.

Two forwards, two defenders and the rest just run from one end to the other

With the old style in brackets I'd say you have your lockdown small defenders (BP), your tall key defenders (FB, CHB), your running defenders (HB), your wings and centre (are sorta the same as before), your running high half forwards (HF), your tall key forwards (CHF, FF), your small forwards (FP), followed by the followers (RUCK, RR, R). Still kinda the sameish format, everyone just runs a lot more these days.

I do know this. I'm bloody glad we didn't play today. I seriously would have considered watching at the pub and not gone even though spent money on flights. 40 degrees with a hot gale force wind may have seen me literally cooked.

Agree. We've got as many debutants as the Tigers had on Thursday night.

What in the hell has that got to do with us playing the Crows. Childish and senseless.

I'm chill. It's a free hit game. All the pressure and expectation is on them.

The list is the best it's been in a very very long time.

10x C+= Windy, Webster, Clark, Byrnes, Stocker, Dow, Howard, Cordy, Henry, Hammer
3x C=Carroll, Hastie, Garcia
The a heap of promising D= Hall, O'Connell, Boxshall, McLennan, Said, Dodson, Boyd, Shoey, Barrat, Tauru, Travaglia, Collard and Keeler.

2021 we had:

Need some kids to get themselves in that A category over the next couple of years but overall a very promising list
