Is there something amiss with how we are preparing players at our club?

I was supportive of Marshall coming in today, but after seeing how under done he was, makes me concerned how the club go about clearing players to play. I understand we lacked experience but playing Marshall who was clearly well short of game fitness was asking for trouble. Keeler might not be knocking the door down, but surely he has shown enough to give him a game in his home state.

Marshall is another who was looking thin and could do with quite a lot more muscle and strength for his role. Its an all too common theme at the club players looking more like marathon runners than AFL footballers.

Jones showed last year he takes 2 or 3 games to get going after injury and we again played him without any match practice.

Clark looked like he was running in 'gum boots', yet people keep expecting him to become the player they envisaged.

It will be interesting to see what condition the players return in over the next few weeks.
I hear what you say but we get pumped by the same margin & the narrative is shouldn’t have played Keeler - too many debutants - we should have gone with Marshall’s experience in the forward line even if he was underdone.

We have 4 of our 6 starting forwards missing through injury - damned if you do damned if you don’t.

RTB trying to patch many holes!

Was one of the lucky few to attend the game. Despite our awful performance, I got to live out a bucket list item and take a mark on the hill after Soligo’s out on the full. Took it one grab over some 10yo Crows supporter in front of that “knock, knock” Saints lady from TikTok. At least I was flying the flag for us.

Come on. That is problem. King and Henry maybe, if they are ever fit.

Sherman and Owens are only good occasionally and Pou could be great, but isn’t yet.

King 25
Henry 24
Sharman 25
Owens 22
Pou 21

The above at the end of the year.

They are babies. We have all of them for another 8 more years.

We are hoping King and Henry get a clean run and start to deliver. We have seen games and moments. We are crying out for consistency

Hard not to feel really shit about today.

I don't want to see any more of Clark and Cordy. Would rather try Hammer down back permanently.

If Keeler and Heath couldn't get a start today, considering how obviously underdone Marshall was and how far off the level Boyd looked, I would say the writing is well and truly on the wall.

NWM, the only one from our drafting since 2021 who has become a genuine player, looked totally checked out. As good as gone.

2023 was the peak of the Steele, Sinclair, Wilkie core, not the beginning of the rise. We've got a long road ahead, and that's if the younger players we've got turn out to be any good.

Especially after our finish to last year
Back to reality now

I worry our finish to last year will cost us.
We've managed a couple of times over the last 10 years to get a run on at the worst possible times. This has papered over plenty of cracks and cost us dearly with draft position in years we really couldn't afford to stuff up.

Owens is still on potential. Never kicked more than 23 goals in a season as a third tall. He might end up a star but right now it's forecasting not output.

Phillipou is the highest potential of all of them ATM.
Our team and how it performs will be all on potential - we do have the usual more experienced players that we know there capabilities like Wilkie , Marshall , Sinclair , Steele , Hill and by the way all of these guys played today and apart from Wilkie no of them showed up today.

Any we have been waiting for this year to commence and hoping our young stars with potential start winning us games -

King / has the talent to be anything but has been restricted due to injury.

Henry / is a player who gives us as they say Xfactor that most other teams have , once back in we will be far more dangerous in the forward line.

Owens / Maybe our best contested player in the team - if he fills his potential he could end up being our best player.

Phillipou / this is the kid who showed in a few games last year after playing in the 2s he will be better than most of our midfielders we currently run with.

Sharman / a true forward who can take a mark and is a o'k kick - the sort of guy we need not having Membrey now.

These are the future of the club and if they perform this year we will win more than we lose - of course guys like Howard and Butler will give us more than what there replacements showed today - but it is time to move past Camanitti as a key forward , you need to have a creative big mobile guy who can create and I hate to say it but he will never be that guy , I'd rather give Keller a run due to his natural ability , just seems the indigenous guys have it.
I would not right Hammer off because he could very well be our best option down back ahead of Cordy who at best is the 3rd defender in a backline and really he shouldn't be getting a game again due to he has shown everyone he is not very good.

The game plan of playing Marshall more forward this year is way off the mark - he is our best midfielder and should be played there - way off his best today as well as Sinclair / hopefully they get game fitness and lift us from what we saw today.

Hill needs to play as a true wingman and if he doesn't get into the game he needs to be dropped / we need to stop giving him excuses.

Anyway this is the team I would be running with this year when everyone is available.

Byrne (needs to become Websters replacement)or blood who has the ability to do it.
Howard (our best defensive tall)
Schoemaker (our best 3rd tall option)

Sinclair and Nas our strongest players in the halfback line
Wilkie will take the most dangerous forward.

Wood - does the job on a wing / not great today but as we know he can help out our undermanned defensive with his elite 2 way running.

Macrae is likely going to be our best midfielder so I'd keep him as our mainstay in the middle.

Hill on the other wing and if he is useless again replace with Wilson who could already of taken Hill spot.

Byrne - Howard - Schoemaker
Sinclair - Wilkie - Nas
Wood - Macrae - Wilson
Butler - Owens - Henry
Higgins - King - Sharman

Marshall / Phillipou / Steele

Hastie - Boxshall - Tauru - Windhager - Travaglia

and if Marshall needs a break , it's time for King to take up some slack.

Hill plays if he shows something same as Webster but we need to be looking at getting some of these kids filling these roles.

Time to pension off Jones , Cordy and if we need a tall forward use Keller - time to get him in the team to see what he can offer and Hammer needs to become a defender or his time at the club is limited.

You could be in line for a call up for us next week, we could do with someone that can take a mark even it is over a 10 year old.

Even if we managed to draft - say Langford and Draper.

They don’t necessarily change today’s outcome. They don’t guarantee Nas stays either.

Instead of hypothetically a top 3 pick this year. We could be picking at 7 and still losing Nas.

Just think this also needs to be mentioned.

Aswell as I think that whilst today was shit. We didn’t have either our best side playing or our best side for the future.

It’s rediculous that anyone comes out and Potts Trav. Untill he has 20 afl games reserve some bloody judgement. Who gives a crap about the other draftees. Oh and btw. It’s not Trav who you should be pitting it’s Taru.
No one's potting Trav he hasn't gotten a game however, as a saints fan you have a right to be concerned with our drafting and development strategy.
We dont have A grade midfield talent it has been evident for the best part of 10 years.
Let's hope he makes it as an A grade mid because the club needs him to.

Haven’t we got the most games into under 23s in each of the last 2 seasons?

How is the development the issue?

We sacked our last recruiter. Dimples first pick - Hall, played today and was one of our best.

Dimple also the reason we got Macrae.

We were in a tricky spot last year. IMO Lindsay is a better player at the moment, he definitely has a better kick and turn of speed, but he is a pure winger and doesn't look like he'll ever be a centre square midfielder. Trav seems to me to be a bit more low floor high ceiling as he could turn into a centre square midfielder.

In terms of development, its nice to see Trav actually training with the mids. I absolutely hate the idea of drafting a mid and pussyfooting around with them and playing them on the wing or half back. If you draft a mid, play them as a mid. We've seen so many other players go past ours because they actually get the exposure they need.

No I don’t have a right to be concerned with last years drafting strategy. The guys who have played in rd 1 have played rd 1.

Tom Mitchell spent three years dominating neafl.

Most of the people saying we should’ve drafted someone else or are concerned have never watched Trav play a game.

Anyways. Would it kill you guys to at least wait for him to play a game.

By far one of the best media performers
RTB is starting to remind me of "Chance the Gardener", or as the media nicknamed him, Chauncey Gardiner, from the film, Being There. The character was played by Peter Sellers who won the Oscar for Best Actor.

If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favour and look it up. For those who've seen it, what do you think? Is RTB our version of Chauncey Gardiner?

Our team will improve surely - I do agree with you that our core has peaked - guys like Hill , Steele look to me are just about at there used by date.
Sinclair has a bit left same as Marshall but need the match time.
Our backline is lacking that tall defender and no matter what people say about Howard , we need him playing.
Forward line will be totally transformed with Sharman , King , Owens , Henry and Butler back.

And our midfield is missing a game changer and that is Phillipou

Get these 7 guys back and we will be winning a few games

You think he’s autistic?

How many AFL games have you played? Do you have to be an ex-AFL player to have an opinion on here?

I was responding to a statement I was a 60+ booze drinking slob which couldn't be further from the truth, but who cares about context I guess.

Well we better get good soon, haven't got too many years left
