It seems they don't want anything to do with us either.

Not sure how likely it is or if it's even progressed was just a throwaway comment that we'd approched him. She also mentioned that we approached someone from North who used to work for us but got knocked back, can't remember the name though.
David Noble has been a person of interest, so not sure if that's who she meant?

I think it was a woman she mentioned? I was only half watching at the time though.

The Herald Sun understands Melbourne has since privately acknowledged it would have scuttled any potential postseason deal anyway, given the club’s slide to 14th meant they had a juicy pick six in the draft instead of somewhere in the mid teens.

They weren’t giving that up for a 27-year-old half back, no matter how good he was!

Inside the Dan Houston trade: Taking a bullet, sleepless nights and the ‘unbelievable tensions’
Houston didn't reject us. We didn't want him anyway.

Didn't post the whole article, but yeah there's a fair paragraph before that bit about Houston being a done deal until everything fell apart and he basically said 'yeah nah, that place is a dumpster fire, no pls'.
Yep, the club turning into an episode of MAFS didn't do us any favours for attracting players, but I'm more bemused by the backpeddalling on how much we would have given up for Houston. Like yeah maybe we didn't realise we'd have a top ten pick to play with but we were still willing to give up two first rounders for him. We were offering well and truly above market value.

Don't agree we were offering above market value at the time the trade was first floated.

Based on ladder position at the time and expectations the most we would have offered would have been around 2024 pick 18 and probably that or later in this year's draft given the amount of F/S and Academy picks.

Assuming 2x pick 18s (and nothing coming back the other way), that's equivalent to the value of pick 5.

Pies gave up this year's first rounder (let's guess that as pick 12), pick 36, John Noble (Collingwood valued him at pick 20) and Joe Richards (steak knives, so won't bother adding) - That's the equivalent value of pick 2.

Would have been hard to see us backing out of a deal if it came to it, but pretty clearly between round 11 and end of season the currency we had to deal with drastically changed.

I think using the points system to value trades is a bit dubious, they are simply there to value F/S and academy bidding. Theres a reason teams hoard later picks to bid match rather than trying to trade up the draft to get access to their nominated players, it's significantly better value.

For comparison, I'd say an equivalent trade would have been F1, ANB, Bailey Laurie and one of the second rounders we threw at Essendon for pick 9. I'd much rather do that deal than throw in an extra first (even if that first was in the mid-teens)

I'm using the points system to compare the market value you were talking about. Yes it's simplistic, but I would rather try and use actual numbers than just feelings. Too many people freak out hearing 'first round pick' when in reality that could mean pick 1 or it could mean pick 22. Using complete guesses and just general feelings is more 'dubious' to me than actually assigning values based on things that actually happened and realistic forecasts.

The point is, at the actual time the Houston to MFC trade was being floated it was a VERY different scenario in terms of available currency to what it was at end of season.

Do you think the alternative trade I proposed was a fair comparison to what Collingwood gave up? If so, let's say we finished 6th last year, would you still prefer we trade two firsts or the alternative I suggested?

No I don't think it matches up against the Collingwood one tbh.

But again, we're talking about the value of the trade when it was first floated compared to when it actually would have happened. That's the point.

You must rate John Noble higher than I do.

Anyway, you obviously see it differently. Agree to disagree.

Supermercado will Goodwin end his career as a #FistedForever contributor?

Gave us all the one thing we've waited our entire life for then pissed away a generational team that should have at least had a second flag.
