I know this wont happen but geez I wish JL would be more creative. I think we should push Cox forward if Cyclone is rucking. O'Meara and or Sharp could play half back for brief periods to make this work with rotations for the next few weeks. LJ can ruck 75% of the time,(so no time forward) Cyclone 15% and Voss 10% would be what id do now until Darcy returns. I hate being critical of Freo players but I simply dont think Reidy is up to AFL standard.
Agreed.

We have managed to develop quite a few players who can play multiple roles but rarely do I see anything too creative from the coaches box.

I also agree with Cox btw. He always looks a bit dangerous when going forward.

He is the best key forward we have since Pav, coming off a PCL injury and you want to put him in the ruck.

Putting him in the ruck, ensures his body has more collisions, and will be soarer every week, and he is at risk for more knee\PCL injuries.

This is why.

He had his best season ever playing that exact role and he only has about 15-20 ruck contests per game. I think playing him in the ruck actually helps him get into the game, so I’m happy to risk it. I know we all worry about injuries and in this case it’s valid but I just think we need to give everyone the best opportunity to perform and stop worrying about scratching the car

I'm fine with Treacy doing ruck work, he's played well in that role as a pinch hitter.

Gone are the days of dealing with Taberner pinch hitting 💀

Why are you assuming he is going to be injured, thats the issue

Don't go into a game assuming a player will get injured

Go into a game picking the best team to win

If injuries were just wishful thinking hard enough we would have Darcy in already and run him into the ground until he is fit enough.

Darcy is a good example of a player being targeted by opposition knees too, a couple of years ago early in the year Darcy got smashed against Melbourne every time he was standing out under the high ball.

Even Treacy deploys the hard contest against opposition players. That will come back to him in the ruck, especially at the bounce.

I understand wanting to get him up near the ball, but it's not really Treacy near the ball that people wanted, it was him being kicked to so he could mark and move it up the field. He can start forward for that.

I don't think I have been so nervous/interested about team selection before.

It is really a nightmare.

9 defenders in the 23.
A forward has been injured.
A non functioning ruck, who really needs to be dropped.
and a club who don't like to make more than 2 or 3 at the max changes, when I think 4 are needed to replace Switta with a forward, replace Reidy with Voss and drop two defenders with a mid and a forward.

I don't love Worner on the wing either. It will be facsinating to know which way they go.
Would love to try Banfield as a tagger again.
The way Bayley smith got off the chain is plain embarrassing for the midfield. He was working both ways, meanwhile watching MJ just jogging so he could be offensive side, for example. Such a horrific midfield game.

That means NOD stays wing, can push Omera at half forward and would try Chapman to be the sweeper and have Worner defending.

But gee, Aish can’t get into this team is very worrisome. 9 defenders in and it’s Walker, Wagner, Chapman, Worner. All mostly poor ball users, apart from Wagner, all very one dimensional. Aish covers so many holes with players out. Why not try him instead of Worner or even he can be defensive wing whenever NOD is in the middle.

Brodie and Erasmus have things to work on still

Played Andy, Sebba, Johnson, JOM, Noddy in the midfield, felt they had a better preseason than the other 2

Yes they are ahead of the first 2. But we aren't replacing those 5 guys, we need someone to take the spots vacated by Young or Fyfe (I would think we normally would play all 7, perhaps one as sub). There's also Switta (but I assume that is for Bolton).

I would play Erasmus and hope he gives us somewhere on the spectrum of Knevitt to Bowes from the weekend (i.e. lots of tackles and 10-20 middling touches from a slowish but tall midfielder).

Most teams have at least one tackling machine to do the grunt work around the ball. We have none. Geelong played the above two and Atkins. They knew a tackle heavy approach would make us crumble.

If we replace Reidy with Voss then we have the option of either Voss or Treacy to support Jackson - depending on how things pan out during the game.

Walker - Pearce - Chapman
Ryan - Cox - Clark
Sharp - Omeara - Odriscoll
Bolton - Treacy - Freddy
Reid - Amiss - Voss

Jackson - Brayshaw - Serong

Johnson - Wagner - Draper - Erasmus
Sub Banfield

It would be really helpful if one fringe player improved between seasons.

That could well be Erasmus if they give him a chance to prove himself. MJ was pretty good on the weekend also so he could be taking a leap.

Whats the Ins and Out?

In: Bolton, Erasmus, Chappy, Voss
Out: Reidy, Worner, Banfield, Switta

That would almost be the perfect scenario in my mind. Absolutely will not happen that way.

We become so much more mobile with Voss in for Reidy

If Voss plays most of the year and continues his average marks inside fifty as last year then he will be a second Treacy, the two of them averaged 2.4/2.5 last year.

It's really just the marks around the ground that Voss needs to hold and he would be the same stat wise, marking wise as Treacy. Both similar mark on lead average, both similar marks inside fifty average, Treacy +1 contested marks on Voss and +3 on average total marks.

Voss got his hands to a lot of them and fumbled it, but looked better against Melbourne in that regard.

I just posted what JL said in the presser

He has to put it between the big sticks more as well.

Id have Narkle over Walker in the 22 but I agree with the rest of your 22. Play Walker as the sub to add run from the back half and give the option of moving Cox forward if we get an injury or for the last quarter to add run to the defence if we have no injuries.(eg Cox for Voss) We need a change up in tactics in th last quarter. Walker in my view needs a bit of a wake up call.

If I see all 3 key Fwds fly for the same ball this weekend I’ll pull the remaining 5 strands of hair out of my head. That’s the biggest change I want for this week
Oh gawd that does my head in too!

Whenever I see that I always think of my old Tee Ball coach drilling us to call "MINE!" when going for a catch.

I know it's a bit of a silly reference, but surely that sort of thing should still be getting taught to the kids at an early stage of their development.
