Strategy Curtin's role in 2025?

Watching the replay its obvious he is still taking a while to get into games. But with confidence he will start demanding the ball more and his team mates will be looking to give it to him more.

That blind turn on Hill and the spin when tackled and having the Saints player not able to hold him is why we need to get it to him more, and he needs to command it more.

Have to persist

Curtin is not Tex's replacement. He's Jordan Dawson Mark 2. JD thinks that and it's pretty obvious that he'll be a big bodied midfielder. He's powerful, explosive and has a killer left foot. Wouldn't be shocked if he's a future captain. This thread reminds me of discussions 15 years ago, around whether Tex would make it at AFL level, when it was obvious he was a rare talent with leadership capabilities
**** yeah.

People need to chill the **** out.

I think with the bigger guys, it's understanding what they have physically that others don't.

All young players are finding their, to use the Fox Footy term, "one wood".

Look at RT, he's 22. This is his 5th year on our list, he's just ticked off 50 games ... how different was he physically last year when he finally played? He understands what he has - he's leant into it. Beast.

Look at Fog, he's 25. This is his 8th year on our list, he's just ticked off 100 games ... how different was he once he got his feet? He understands what he has - he's leant into it. Beast.

Curtin is 20. This is his 2nd year on our list, he's had 8 games ... give the guy an effin chance!!!!!

I think he will be something to behold once he settles into AFL and really understands what he has that others do not. He should be given the WHOLE year to develop at AFL level - he could even make an impact at the end of this year. Would be waaaaaaay ahead of schedule, but he is a ridiculous talent.

Post makes too much sense.

You haven’t addressed why Curtin isn’t getting 25 touches and 3 goals in your post

I see the Dawson comparison, but not sure its quite right.

For me, I'd like to see him become as Blicavs type. Plays wing, forward, even backlines, but also plays a bit in the ruck where he becomes an undersized ruck but oversized mid.

He's not ready for that yet, but imagine in 3 years time when his body is developed. He would be a massive headache for opposition coaches.

When he did get near the ball on Sunday he was able to do something nice with it. A strong contested mark. Brushing off an opponent like it was nothing, etc. He will be very good in due course. The Dawson comparison not the worst one you could make.

He doesn't have Dawsons speed.

Yeah makes sense why the coaches were happy with his performance.

Seemed to draw quality players to run with him, and twice shirked tackles with his physical presence and caught Saints players flat-footed (as they may have thought he'd be caught). 2-3 times this caused us to have the numbers going forward and resulted in goals

All Curtin needs to do (his role) is just not have his opponent run amok. That's it.

That way we can keep him in the team. Then he gets game time and eventually he becomes very damaging.

End thread.

We are always impatient - too impatient - with draftees either getting selected, the right amount of playing time or their performances when they are playing. The first couple of years - for most - is just seeing they have the signs, the attributes to become a good player

Curtin does show these already - but we probably won’t see a good player until year 4

If a young player can't play defensively eg alan didak/buddy franklin they play off the bench on a hff or wing. If a player can play defensively they can play more games time off a hbf or pocket. I wouldn't have curtin or draper anywhere near the midfield for their first year or two it just invites injury and it's hard to get into the game. I think any coach knows all this, just nicks knows he needs wins so keeps a player like laird down there or smith last year when really they should be out.

Draper has looked perfectly at home in midfield when he has come on.

Curtin also looked ok when playing off a wing.

Worth watching this and some of the Dawson highlights in that it suits the gameplan well to have midfielders who can take strong one on one contested marks. Helps get the ball over the press into the forward line significantly

There's an element of fans who always viciously attack young players who have been the subject of bad selection practices because they think that's defending the club. 'Oh, we weren't wrong to prioritise Murphy, these guys aren't even AFL players!!!'.

They did it with Fog, they did it with Thilthorpe, now they're doing it with Curtin.

They're the absolute worst. Don't be like those guys. Clown show stuff.

You do not need to see guys like these dominate early in their career. You just need to see the signs, the flashes that they have something. If you haven't seen anything like that from Curtin in his extremely limited game time, you're not watching. The two goals against the Bulldogs last year was enough to back him in for now.

I really hope we can find a couple of CBA per game for Dan, I think he needs some game time in there.
Ideally it would be good to see him get 3-4 in the second half of each game.
Every time he gets the ball, he looks classy.
He always has time and makes good decisions
