Can promise you he won’t be just serviceable. Enough substance now to show acl are career Enders anymore. Petracca Ashcroft Bailey smith off the bat i could keep going

Idk about generational but he’s an all Aus quality player and will be a great addition

Even now I would take I would take Smith over Houston. Houston is a gun but would have only papered over the cracks and restricted our SC even further.

Smith will be a 200 plus gun player. Hopefully we can build around him

Richmond was an abomination, this was just a little sad.. Sad in that it was a full realisation that we are not the team I had hoped we would be, we wont be contending for the premiership and its unlikely this playing group or coaching group will ever be.. We played quite well, we brought the effort and most of our better players played well, yet we were soundly beaten by a team who is just better than us.

I will continue to watch and support the guys, but that hope that we were on the right path and that it will eventually all click is fading.

Agree with both posts. A few posters have mentioned lack of spread like many did after the hawks loss last year. We play a completely different contested style which unfortunately is looking to be dated based on the past couple of seasons. Basically polar opposite to the hawks that are considered the best team in the comp atm. Anyone can look quick at AFL level in space but we don't create enough of it. It is painful to see Hollands Saad etc sitting at the back of a pack and dump kicking like anyone in the team could do. Our half back flankers (which we do lack) need to be at the front of the contest or at least on the sides to create that spread and overlap. We are so hellbent on the team defense though that players zone off, get lost and seem to be too scared to run with dare.

As an example, saad's run through the middle last night and kick to Williams. Looked like our best play of the season! He was front of the congestion and got into space. Made the hawks chaser look slow in that play. One of very few unfortunately.

Everyone is calling out the dump kicking to a point where it looks like the game plan, and rightfully so. I don't think that is the instruction (would be scary if it actually is - hope I am not wrong here) but it stems from an overly defensive mindset where we seem to not trust anyone outside Weitering to win a one on one in our back half.

Hawks dump kicked a lot too last night. Difference was they set up for it and try to hit those certain spots knowing and expecting players to be there. A lot of our dump kicks look totally blind and to open opposition players.

Collingwood were kings of the dump kick to the boundary and reset from a stoppage. Especially in their flag years. Hawks look to do the same from the back half.
The glaringly obvious difference was their D50 transition x hand.

We’re just not doing it at the moment - running in waves to accept the handball.

Go back to R15 last year & watch the team running in support - playing on.

It’s in there somewhere!

Confidence is king.

How often was a Carlton Player looking around for someone to kick it to and lucky if just one Player presented..?
Most of the time they had to just bomb the kick. Hawthorn on the other hand....... had lots of openings and team mates running past. Their handball game and passing was well drilled.
Their efficiency moving the ball forward was elite compared to ours.

In the end we were lucky to only lose by only a few Goals.
Sloppy tackling gave away too many frees ... probably cause they weren't used to putting on that much pressure.
Teams doing consistent intense tackling pressure get a lot better at it.

David King saying "there's about half a dozen guys that you really don't have to mark, because you don't mind if they get the ball as they aren't going to hurt you" definitely resonated. Who, in our side, gets the ball and makes you feel safe? Conversely, who gets the ball and opposition fans have to just hope this kick won't hurt them?

Also, I think he was being generous; there's more than half a dozen in that category.
Safe? Weitering, increasingly Cowan, Fogarty. That's about it.

I don’t buy we don’t have the list or depth. We are stacked with talent compared to to other teams. Review the list if you prefer.

Our problem(s) are evident and haven’t changed. The difference in play was as evident last night as day and night.

1. We don’t run and carry from a stoppage. We kick to the next contest.
2. We kick long inside 50 to Harry or Charlie. No matter what the numbers are against each forward. We don’t honour leads from others or look to lower the eyes to go short.

That’s coaching.

Good planning makes your bottom 5-10 more effective players. Richmond won 3 premierships with 10 well below average players who bought into the game plan and comitted to role/team first football.

Maximise your strengths and stop exposing average players to crucial plays that ask them to do more than their abilities allow.

Exactly. We don't maximise our strengths and minimise our weaknesses, because we are not drilled well enough. We stuff up the fundamentals too much. This should be the no.1 focus, and it's not.

It comes down to list management. Again, elite players have wanted to come to our club in the last 6 months, Trac and Houston but we 'stuck to our guns' and went with the current list.

Houston last weekend: 27 disposals, 10 intercepts, 5 inside 50s. BOG, let me say that again BOG...

Sometimes you have to pull the trigger and try and win a flag...

It's not a talent problem. We win on talent. 1 extra player isn't going to fix us when our system is not up to scratch.
And bringing in Houston would most likely mean that we couldn't pay TDK.

My real fear is now we are in no mans land. I read all the comments here and they are the same every week and have been for 2 years.

Bottom 6 players not good enough
Bomb it long
Slow
Poor skills
No game plan
Dumb football
Lazy soft slow defenders etc etc

and whilst I don't disagree, nothing is improving, we are getting older, our best players are pushing 30

IMO we can't win the flag and we have too much top end talent to be in the bottom.

After 30 years of medicority I feel we are no better off and stand for nothing. We are just going through the motions and it's really sad.

I am now resigned to the fact that I will likely never see another flag in my lifetime and it hurts

Disappointing but expected.

We struggle against teams that are based on pressure and run, such as Hawthorn. We are a contested/multiple stoppage focused team and will always struggle unless we can control the ball and force stoppages.

Better performance overall, but again MC make poor decisions..

Lord as sub? The bloke is our only two way runner against a team that focuses on run.

Young in for McKay? Bring in Moir and tell McGovern or Haynes to actually play as a key defender. Id rather Kemp down back with SOS up forward, Moir would allow this and add something different up forward.

I could go on about positions and matchups, but what's the point. MC will stick with plan A and hope.. at least it was good to see Williams have a run through the middle to mix it up and get in the game a bit more, maybe let Doc and Williams spend time across HB against smaller teams.. they were both pretty handy back there....

We probably had the worst 5 players on the ground and still managed to hit the scoreboard the same amount of times the Hawks did. That is crazy considering one side is apparently coached by a dud and the other a super coach. (Which I somewhat agree with)
Yes we have a hell of a lot of issues but there’s a total exaggeration of how bad that performance was.

I remember so many of our shots last night coming from rushed kicks from a pack or stoppage and thought no wonder we kick a lot of points and then i remember at one stage the commentators said the Hawks had 7 goals from 15 F50 entries, to get 7 goals from 15 entries to me shows the kicks for goal aren’t under a lot of pressure.

WTF was Charlie doing at CHB last night? You take the best fwd in the comp on his day, even undercooked as he was and move him to CHB. Tell me an opposition coach who wouldn't rub his hands in glee at the sight of that.

1. If Charlie isn't fit (he wasn't). Don't play him.
2. If you ignore 1, play him in his best position. He's still drawing their best defender, if not 2 of them. Use him as a f***king decoy if you have to create space for Kemp or whoever else.
Stop speaking common sense 🤣😂🤣

Had we not missed the three very gettable shots in the second half that they transitioned down the other end to get goals themselves I wonder what we'd be saying.

The TDK and Silvagni shots were especially frustrating.

These are the “key moments” in games that we don’t deliver on. The game “in the balance” and we miss crucial set shots. Doc’s dropped chest mark in the forward 50 near end of the third quarter was another missed key moment.

The better teams take these chances.

Performance obviously a lot better than last week, but we seem to play thinking we might win, whereas teams like hawthorn play knowing they will win.

See how we go against doggies.

Haven't read the comments but I am assuming last nights loss was all Motlop's (19 possessions, 6 tackles 1goal 3 behinds, 8 score involvements) fault?
One of the few sparks from last night, finally looked like the player we had hoped he would become.. that needs to be his standard, although would like him to pick up the ball cleanly instead of going for the kick of the ground as often as he does.

The plus side is that rebuilds now have been shown to not need to take 5-7 years. They can be done in 2.

The key really is the players you bring in via trade & Free Agency. Hawthorn rejuvinated things seemingly overnight with a couple of astute trades. They've got a couple of drafted kids but the biggest impact is coming from players brought in from other avenues.

It's just crucially important to get those inter-club moves right and for good value. The issue is, we've been less than great at that.

It's clear you need at minimum 4 absolute elite kicks in the back half of the ground, including the wingers to be able to transition effectively and score from defence. I'd argue we have none.

Last night this was stark

Watching Amon Impey Sicily DAmrosio etc kick the ball is impressive. They kick darts and hit targets
