We have two young KPDs in the pipeline that need a few years of development before they are ready (W Dawson and Whitlock) and we have two mid 20s state-league KPDs who were picked up as mature age depth should any of our starters get injured (Pink and K Dawson).

How many AFL teams have starting-calibre young talls just waiting in the wings? What's the consternation here?

Those two (W Dawson and Whitlock) maybe a few years away from being the peak versions of themselves, but it won't be that long before they're ready to play at the level.

My consternation if any is that the one good experienced KPD we have just cannot stay on the park and there is a gap before the next generation is ready, but you can’t expect to have AFL level tall backups sitting round the VFL.

Realistically, pink/dawsonx2/Whitlock all probably perform at the same level... uninspiring pick is pink, but can probably play on fritch or the younger talls, the other 3 probably only on the younger talls...

Stephens, I get the angst. But there was angst for LDU, cunnington, xerri etc etc etc... I see something there and the added run i get.

Uninspiring for the future yes. Right choices for now? Probably...

Personally I’m not disputing that Pink is more physically advanced than Dawson. That’s just not even worth debating given the age gap.

What I’m disputing is that we will get anymore from Pink in the 22 then we will Dawson. We will get SFA from Pink, we have the data to prove this. If we are going to get SFA from Pink, we may as well get SFA from Dawson, give him exposure to the level and guess what, there’s actually a possibility given his much higher ceiling that we may actually get more then just SFA.

What frustrates me is the reason that we needed the change in the first place - another Logue injury.
By the time he comes back again we will have had eighteen games from him in two and a half seasons. Half way through his contract for practically zero return.
I said on here at the time we were recruiting him that we would regret it, and for mine that’s exactly how it’s panning out.
Prioritise big Will over Griff imo, much better return in the long run

The decision should absolutely be who is better and more suitable right now. The club needs to win games. After the last five seasons and all the draft picks it’s the only thing that matters. It’s why we have brought in the likes of Parker and Darling, yeah sure their experience helps the younger players but ultimately it’s about being better right now and actually winning games of football.

While you're at it, you can comfortably apply that very same thinking to a handful of other senior players getting regular games.

It's so obvious.

I think for guys like LMac or Tucker, absolutely the argument can and should be made. I'd much rather see Hardeman and Goater get games.

But for positions like Full Back, where you need size and physicality, playing guys before they're ready is not only not advisable but can be actively detrimental to their development.

I am not super optimistic, but we need to leave absolutely nothing in the tank after this game. Next week we have the Crows in Adelaide, and they look awesome this year. Unspeakable things will happen in that game if we are uncompetitive in this one.
