AFL Autopsy R2: Crows eviscerate us

Essendon are Kodak of the AFL.
We have not been able adapt for the last 20 years.
My first gripe is Brad Scott makes very few changes.
Zach Reid was being decimated. Why not move him forward and make jones go back.
See what you can learn.
McGrath and sheil are not at the level at half back.
Reid and Prior are both too slow and lack physicality.
Hobbs does not have an afl position.
Jones is not a wingman. Caleb Windsor is the type of winger you need to cultivate and recruit.
Perkins doesn’t do enough but was good last week.
The errors of dodoro are really hitting home.
This. When it was obvious we were not getting up off the canvas, he didn't use the opportunity to throw some magnets around.
Fair comment to make that he should have thrown them around before we were KO'd.

That'll have the 47 competing footy shows this week out to analyse our flaws and ringing the alarm bells, maybe the coaching team can take some notes

What you're actually gonna get is someone on each show taking video footage of one or two plays of players not defending properly, slamming them for lack of effort and no actual analysis

Couldn’t agree more
But decisions of late have been poor.
Hobbs a poor selection.
Tsatsas not the need Humphrey was.
Parish and McGrath extensions ridiculous.
D’ambrossio decision poor McKay and Gresham acquisitions questionable.
How many second and third round picks have we nailed of late?
I do like Angus Clarke.
Most is still before Scotts time.
He had been here 5 minutes before we drafted Tsatas and did not really participate in that draft.
Hobbs was before his time.
He was on board with the Parish and McGrath extensions but at that stage they where still getting told we just have to develop these guys. Throw in 2MP as well. I have heard there is a bot of a story behind how long they got which is why Vozzo showed Dodoro the door after Barham promised him some sort of role.
D'Ambrosio was one they wanted to keep but it was another Dodoro stuff up and Essendon stuff up for letting Dodoro do the contracts. He was telling them it was okay. Mass would stay for 1 year.
McKay and Gresham. Yeah not great. Coach has to wear that.
Roberts is a good get for a late pick but the reality is we have had Rosa as list manager for 1 draft.
The cold hard facts are we have got nothing from the 2020 draft.
2021only produced Hobbs who is hard at it but has been passed by Caldwell and Durham.
Serious question marks on 2022 as well.
That is the issue.

Well given I saw most of the match sims I can refute the claim. They played two uneven match sims with younger guys mainly on one side and both times it was not for 4 quarters. One was a half in a 4 quarter sim and the other was 2 quarters in a 6 quarter sim. At some stage you have to play the young guys up against the better ones to give them an idea of the level needed. The whole possible v probable is a furphy. The sides where often swapped around after a quarter.

Yeah I was just being shady.

I do think selection pressure and having depth and higher training standards and forging competitiveness that way is the way to go

Come on man. This is the story we need.

McKay is the worst big recruit in recent memory. Seen enough of Hobbs to know he isn't worth persisting with. Menzie still one of the worst footballers in recent memory. I love how all summer the big question was our forward line, meanwhile our backline was just quietly working away like "none of them know we will be the real problem!"

It was men v boys today and not because we were young. Our senior players were brushed aside as though they were in the wrong weight division.

We were swarming numbers to contested situations at a ratio of 3 to 2 and the Crows still steamrolled us, holding width outside the contest to stroll through what ever counts for our ground defence.

Notice how they stuck tackles and were able to stand up in all of ours? Their players were often being spun 360 and waiting to dish off handballs. It was quite embarrassing.

It's this arse backward approach to Essendon a la Brad Scott. If he was genuinely in the game he would have known not to let this weakness fester. But he needed that look, didn't he? And here we are. Regressing in year 3, getting younger with player who can't use the ball..

Nicks is basically the only coach I've been prepared to be patient with because he's set such a solid foundation and the talent has (very slowly) caught up.

Adelaide are a very good team.
We are a very poor one.

We really are horribly unbalanced right across the park and it has everything to do with drafting and development.

Bringing in Rosa tells me the club understands that drafting has been an issue.
It is concerning though that we haven’t gone hard for development coaches at other clubs.

Anyway….im just sorry for my kids at this point

Managed to convince my youngest to come to his first game in 2 years (he’s 13). He’d lost interest with our cliff falls each year, Tippa’s retirement, Joe leaving, and nothing nostalgic to cling onto. He’s always maintained a modicum of Essendon loyalty though. To look across at him during the second qtr and see the boredom on his face and the reaching for his phone to play games on it really cut deep and makes me almost despise my own club. It gives us nothing but disappointment year upon year. campaigners!

Well you know full well why.
Problem is Essendon people convinced the new Coach and CEO there was unfulfilled potential when there was not and it took almost 2 seasons before it was obvious we needed another rebuild.
May have been different if we could have hired a coach that had done a deep dive into the list and not hired one on the basis the list was okay and just underperforming.

Brad was convinced there was unfulfilled potential on the list?

Was this during the process?

How far removed from the game did he have to be

Overreactions galore.
Fielding the youngest 22 this week.
Blind sally could see we were undersized forward and back.
Would have had to completely dominate the midfield and be very efficient going forward to have any chance.

stringer going has hurt us, especially more now we have Langford out for 6.

Ridley out with concussion, meant we were without our best user and most composed defender.

Our skill level is pretty bad. I actually think our handballing could be worse than the kicking. The amount of handballs that missed team mates or even stopped their momentum really frustrated me. Our kicking especially across half back was horrible and predictable, and when we got it into our forward line is was high to skinny forwards.

Our effort is there though, and I didn’t feel like we completely gave up the game.

Team defence gets spoken about a lot but it’s really hard to defend after poor turn overs.

If we have better disposal efficiency I bet our team defence looks a whole lot better.

I mentioned last year that I think Hately was worth promoting, but a lot said he was a good state level player only. I still stand by that I'd rather Jackson out there rather than Hobbs, Perkins, McGrath, Sheil. He doesn't stop and actually has guts unlike the aforementioned.

I'm not saying he would be a game breaker or anything like that, but we lack competitors out there.

Did this convincing happen during the process?

How far removed from the game did Brad Scott have to be go believe this, why didn't he ask his brother, now that the dust has settled and Brad has fully committed to this list why on God's green earth would we trust the judgement of that same person?

It's interesting going back now and watching making their mark on Amazon prime when they were behind the scenes of Nicks first season trying to establish what is bearing fruit now
