We don’t know how much work he’s done over the last month, but it’s not like Larkey is a player who pushes up the ground a lot. We need a stopper for Larkey and Keane ain’t it

All we know is that he was definitely preferred to Borlase prior to his lis franc injury and that he didn't join main training until after Xmas. And even then it was managed sessions, from memory. I think they're being conservative and with an otherwise fully fit squad against north Melbourne, are sticking to the script. I won't be surprised to see him replace Borlase in the next week weeks after a couple of SANFL tune ups.

Looking at Darling's heat maps, he seems to get possession up the ground. I thought it was interesting Murray didnt go to Draper after playing on Thilthorpe during the off season, but maybe Keane is best suited to the stay at home forward and was always the Larkey plan and in the theme of not changing our plans, Borlase is better suited than Butts to playing on Darling and getting up the ground?

If both Borlase and Butts are fit there is no comparison, Butts is the better footballer and has the better endurance and athleticism.

If they are trying to manage him they can still start him and then sub him off if nreded, or at least manage his time on the field.
Problem with the 'tactical' sub is when the team cops an injury after it's made and ends up a player light in rotations.
Not a fan of having the same player start as sub each week.
If Burgess especially is explaining to Draper what's going on and why, I think Sid'll handle it ok.
At 18, Draper is still slightly built although not as scrawny as Sholl was/is. The knock (or corkie) he copped last week was not from a huge shirtfront, but he went down hard. He'll be hit harder than that at other times and needs exposure to the physicality and speed of AFL.
The first three Rounds are not about managing Draper. He's a side-issue; a cog in a much bigger wheel.
They're about winning games with smart use of and selection from a near-full list.
I'd rather they went with Curtin or Peatling this week and let Sid play from the start.
In Burgess, I trust.
If he thinks Draper has the tank to start and play a full game, then Draper has the talent to hold his own and we can use the sub as an injury precaution.
It won't matter if it's Curtin (very versatile) or Peatling (I doubt he will be sub; named on-field) as long as the players are kept informed about why the moves are made.

Well if I'm Jordan Butts I'd be onto my manager because I'm sure several other AFL clubs will have big interest and we are already aware there has been zero interest in Borlase whenever he's been out of contract or delisted even if we had told him we were going to re-rookie him. Strange move IMO if Butts is fit to play.
They must not think Butts is battle hardened to play coming off his injury and have gone with the more fit and in form player from what they’ve seen

Given butts injury history no doubt they are trying to get him fitter and more durable so he doesn’t break down

Thats probably the option, I think Keane wouldve gone to Larkey anyway.

Darling isnt particularly quick and Borlase is every bit as strong.
Pretty sure Borlaise played on Darling in his debut game ? Or not long after and equipped himself well

Will be relying on team defence if Keane is on Larkey , slight concern for mine and also Keane suits the intercept role which will be takes away a little

As always comes down to midfield ascendancy and the way the ball comes in

I think it's as simple as the club views Butts as the backup for Keane, and Borlase as the backup for Murray.
Not at all

It’s as simple as burgess and nicks thinking Butts needs more football and more resilience in his body so he’s not set up to fail

People underrate the role / influence Burgess has in the return from injury space

I wouldn’t read into this that nicks rates borlase more than butts at all and certainly WOULD NOT read into it that Borlase is a pre ordained designated replacement for Murray

Darling 3 goals in an underperforming Eagles side, Oscar Allen 4 goals.

At selection, I think that we back in our system and structure first and don’t worry about individual match ups. Borlase is fit and RTG key defender and he’s replacing a key defender. I don’t think there’s any more depth to the decision. Except that butts is probably not deemed ready yet.

Do we know that’s the reason though and not Nicks thinking Keane can take Larkey so we don’t need Butts?

IMO Borlase tends to look gassed very quickly. Is decent overhead and 1-1 marking, but his running capacity and closing tackling speed is not fantastic, for a guy who's only 192cm. Defence is where we looked shaky last week, Worrell with a few uncharacteristic errors and Keane not having the best of times... our mids will need to keep it out of there.
Bombers scored 15.10 from only 48 I50 entries last week... and Kangas were great out of the middle last week too and finished their game 19.10 from only 53 entries...

This game has danger written all over it.
Yep, this mis my concern.

Struggles with repeat efforts, at the game you can see he is the player who always looks gassed the most.

Maybe he has had a big preseason to fix this?

Other than that is a good defender.

Given the trouble Butts has had with foot injuries youd have to assume he isn't quite there yet fitness wise.

If the 2s play their best he won't be doing much work either

Should check

Cousins was drafted end of 1995 as a pre-draft selection

1996 his 1st eligible year he played - checks notes - round 4 till the semi final (except for R19 )
I meant he started pretty much every game on the bench
