Hello all. This is a continuation of the player ratings table I created last year.

This is a way of tracking how players are performing compared to other players in the same position in the competition. I get these rankings from wheeloratings.com.

After every round I will be updating the table.

The second table ranks our under 24 players compared to other players of the same age (all positions).

Just a note on the rankings, it does have its weaknesses. For example, a brilliant tagging job will not be rated highly (unless the tagger themselves have good stats). From memory, Hutchings was never rated highly, and neither was Sheppard. So, before you get up in arms about Hough having a low rating, (he was rated as one of the worst gen defenders in the competition last year) this is the reason why.

Round One:

Elite:
0
Above Average: 4
Average: 6
Below Average: 13

Notes: No surprises after a dismal round one. A couple of things to note: Ginbey is listed as a midfielder, Hutchinson and Dewar as Gen Fwds. Expect these to change soon.

Round Two:

Elite:
1
Above Average: 5
Average: 8
Below Average: 13

Notes:
  • Our first elite player is Ryan! A brilliant performance from him has him rated the 2nd highest general forward in the competition.
  • Dewar is getting the accolades on this board (deservedly so), however, Hall had a brilliant game. He is currently the 26th highest rated midfielder, and the number one player of his year!

Round Three:

Elite:
1
Above Average: 5
Average: 8
Below Average: 13

Notes:

  • Ryan is still our only elite player.
  • Kelly is having a shocking start to the season. Last year he was hovering around elite status, this year he is below average.
  • Baker and Graham are two of our five above average players, proving to be shrewd pick ups.
  • One of our other above average players was Hall, and he was omitted.
  • The other is McGovern, who is likely to be out injured.
  • Ginbey is having a brilliant start to the year. He should be playing in defense for the rest of the year I think, then maybe during the pre-season at the end of the year he can train midfield again.
  • Next week we play GWS.... eep!

Nice work!

Exactly.. Harley going from #1 ranked under 21 mid to #16 would be due to him giving away free kicks which I believe carries the highest negative penalty

Since different numbers of players are assigned to each position it would be more informative to give the percentiles rather than the ranks. The shading bands are very wide.

Also, how do you calculate the percentiles?

If I can be bothered, after 8 rounds I may start filtering out players who have played less than 25% games
It's interesting stuff so appreciate the effort. Player ratings in AFL are hard to get everyone in agreeance.

The AFL player ratings with their rolling 40 round system weeds out the players that only play well for a handful of games but also goes too far the other way and underrepresents players that have a good block of games. Can't win really.

I considered doing the percentiles but just prefer the look of it this way.

The shading bands of elite, average, above average, and below average are the same as the player benchmarking AFL.com use. It's also the same colours.

Round Four:

Elite:
2
Above Average: 5
Average: 9
Below Average:
15

Notes:

  • Some of the ratings this week proves the weaknesses of this system. For example: Brock is rated the 2nd highest key defender in the competition, and Gross is rated the 2nd worse midfielder in the competition. What the hell?!
  • Hall maintains his number one rating for his age
  • Harley has turned a corner and more performances like this will bring his rating down. It is unlikely his rating will get to what it was last year (54th rated midfielder) as his highest rated games were mostly in the first half of last year before he started getting tagged.
  • One on hand it is frustrating that leaders like Allen, Kelly, Hunt and Cripps are letting the team down (Below Avg, Below Avg, Below Avg, Avg) however it is heartening to witness the next generation (Ginbey, Hall, J. Williams) take the lead

Is this your personal system BeornJ ? What's influencing that Brock rating?
hey Ambrose Burnside.

No, not at all, the ratings come from the AFL Player Ratings, I get it from https://www.wheeloratings.com/afl_stats.html?comp=afl&season=2025

This is simply my system for tracking Eagles players through the season.

The thing about rating defenders is that, from my understanding, if your opponent loses you in traffic, or just pure speed, and takes an uncontested mark and kicks a goal, it doesn't affect your rating. Because, according to the system, you weren't in a one on one that you lost.

By the same token, if you are a brilliant lockdown defender who wears your opponent like a glove so they never get the ball kicked to them, this doesn't affect your rating.

So looking up Brock's stats, he was in 2 defensive one on ones, one of which he won. He also took one contested mark, two intercept marks, had 12 disposals at 83.3% effeciency.

I just looked a little deeper into defenders' ratings.

One thing going for Brock is he didn't give any frees away, and he received three free kicks. Also he had a high number of rebound 50s (7), and a high number of contested possessions (7)

By contrast, Taylor is averaging 1.3 frees against, 0.8 frees for, 4.0 rebound 50s and 6.8 contested possessions.

Now, Brock is still rated way too high, but it's good to work out why.

Round Five:

Elite:
1
Above Average: 3
Average: 12
Below Average: 15

Notes:

  • Ryan is our only elite rated player as of round 5
  • This was depressing to complete
  • But... the under 24 table is a bit more heartening.

Also goes to show how good Gross has been. In a poor team getting thumped, still 4th highest rated player of last year's draft
