Warner isn't coming.

That's the whole premise of the conversation.
I agree it seems unlikely he comes but the end of your post you said even if we trade for Warner we’ve addressed our midfield. Ie that we the other top 2/3 pick on Curtin. But then we haven’t taken a top mid from the current crop. Which I think is an issue

The best thing for us is for Warner to sign a 2 year deal and we bank the pick and money to get him in free agency. He changes too little to get now as opposed to just waiting the 2 years.

Would not take a single experienced player this year. Has only been disastrous for us in the last few tries to let it be for now and just take the draft only approach
Yeah as much as it'd be cool to see Warner kick a few goals for us we need
The boys are bonding together already
who dat?

If we do have 1 and 2 I think there’s sense in drafting 2 mids as the can band together to take on the responsibility to lead the midfield (not straight away), help support each other. There’s not so much focus or reliance on just 1.
This is the sense I get from how Rowell/Anderson have benefited from it.

This idea sounds cool in theory, like the whole Rowell/Anderson thing, but I'd warn it's not always the case.

Remember last year when we were all talking up how great it'd be to have Hewett this year partnering up with Harley, and how exciting it'll be having 2 explosive mids leading our team?

One of them has been deported to the backline because he's not fit enough to play mid, whilst the other can't even get on the park and cops a multi week injury from playing 1 quarter as the sub.

Caught up with some ex WCE staff tonight, that are still involved with the club.

Nice intimate backyard evening.

Reid is gone. Doesn't want to be here
Can’t really begrudge any young player who wants to have an actual meaningful career for leaving this dumpster fire of a club tbh.

agree with most of your thoughts, the 2 mids to help the kids for the next 2-3 years and have elite standards and leadership are a must.
Our current leaders outside of Gov and Baker currently have no real leadership, Duggan and Oscar might be fine in the leadership group but they lack leadership on the field.
I suspect you are right, sorry, but our woke club has in the past confused leadership with popularity and welfare. I do however see some light at the end of the tunnel with Mini.

So we keep picking them until we find them. Hewett and Ginbey may yet develop, but we can't count on that. So go again. This time, don't split picks. Just take the best available mid.

Cripps, Fyfe, Dangerfield, Neale, Mitchell, Selwood, Serong, Yeo, Butters, Warner among a littany of others who say hi.

Your conviction that our second top 5 pick MUST be spent on a mid is unnecessarily restricting our own choices.

All I'm saying is that it's round 5, we don't even know what we have, or how the draft is going to pan out, and we should make draft choices based on best available, and how we view the talent already on our list.

I'm so sorry that nuance is beyond you.
If the draft was tomorrow and we had picks 1 and 2 there would basically only be 3 real choices.
Sharp, Duursma and Cooper Duff Tytler.

The club would basically be choosing which one of those 3 to miss out on and I honestly have no idea who we would choose outside of interviews/go home factor. It may come down to how the club rates Barnett, Williams internally vs hall, allan, gross because depending which group they are more worried about we may feel we need a ruck/mid.

We would have Hawks F1 and our second to package up/move around to grab somebody else we want to target in the draft like a Curtin/Rodriguez/Lindsay.

I would go with Sharp and Duursma personally.
I wouldn't hold any concerns around ending up with too many mids at this stage as Duursma and Reid could easily be played as flankers. I reckon Duursma could float back a lot and really help with our movement out of defence.

Am leaning towards accepting Harley is likely gone and Oscar can be happily farewelled.

This is actually the re-set the the club needs. No more focus on a "hero pick", head down and work on developing a solid group of kids that is going to come through together. Draft Richmond style.

The picks these events would generate, as well as those from our own incompetence should be the basis of the future.

I'd like the PP but would also be happy with the AFL easing up the soft cap to provide additional coaching support.

I am interested in the term EX - a synonym for bitter loosers?
"ex" and "still involved with the club" raised a red flag. I guess they still could be talking to people inside the club.

I think Harley leaves, but not going to get my knickers in a twist over all the articles and pressure that will come over the next 18 months. I hope he stays, but if he leaves, so be it.

I would expect the club to really open the floor to Harley's management and ask what is the club missing, it gets done this year or to maximise value we shake hands and he goes at the end of the season (assuming Essendon - x3 R1).

Oscar also sails into the sunset and go into the draft for argument sake with;
Pick 1, 2, 3, 6, 14, 17, 19, 36 and 54

Sharp, Curtin, Duursma, Freddy Rodriguez - If it make sense to get into 2026 do a deal to change it up the following year but the rest of the picks should be used for Evans, Walley and Banfield.

With McGlade and Kenh looming as 1R picks it wouldn’t make much sense to trade into next year, the picks will most likely just get burnt.

Academy game preview and stream for those interested. Will be a great watch to see who we would be turning Oscar and allegedly Harley into. Unlikely to get a better look at most of the top end prospects all at once than this game and the one in a fortnight until the futures game on grand final day.

We ̀need an elite ruck and CDT fits that profile

If Harley leaves there is no chance we take Duursma. He will leave during his first contract and we won't get the same value back in return.

I have some question marks as to whether he is ‘the right’ ruck for us.

He’s undersized at 200cm, isn’t a hit out winning ruckman, and isn’t that strong aerially but elite around the ground.

He’s a Grundy clone and I’m not sure that’s what we need.

If Harley leaves how do we meet the salary cap minimum btw?

That 2 mill will just be sitting in a hole surely. We can frontload perhaps Waterman, Baker, Hough and Ginbey but that would be a bit overkill and maybe not enough. We also then cant take a free agent on as it will dilute Oscars value too

Even though I dont want us to take a mature ager on we might simply have no choice. Itd be a case of picking up a AFL quality player on a crazyish contract to make it happen. Honestly couldnt even imagine who that could be we are that far off. Maybe we give Lachie Neale 1.5 mill a year to finish up in Perth instead of him going to Freo as something completely absurd?

A issue worth thinking about for sure

Agree with the highlighted section on rucks, and am not really a huge fan of us taking CDT.

If Oscar leaves and Chad resigns we could take Rodriguez, Curtin, mid at Hawks pick, match a bid on Evans.

That's 3 mids and Curtin and not including potential bids on Walley or Banfield.

We are going to be fine with the draft, we will have ample picks to address needs across the list, without neglecting midfield.
Except, if we aren't asking questions of established talent elsewhere, who have 60+ games and some leadership then just end up being a squad of 18-21 up kids like suns and GWS were. We have to be into someone. We have to be exploring. We have the cash to splash, it's time to use it, pay overs. Not sure who is available.
