He looks good, but do you think he's going to be a Bont, Dusty type? It's highly unlikely. He could be a really solid midfielder as part of a team with some absolutely elite players.

It's laughable the amount of people who get emotionally attached to their own team's players and are unable to look at things objectively. The biggest laugh is the people on here who think Hutch will be our midfield saviour. I think a lot of it has to do with him being good looking. Some people are identifying as men.

This is annoying becuase he got 18d, 6CP, 419MG, 4I50 in a game his team lost by 70 and lost CP by 60 in his second game.

His ceiling is much higher than reliable fourth mid in a good team and you’re shitting on your own teams young talent just to make a broader point.

Is he bontempelli? No, but he very easily could be an elite midfielder in this competition with another 60 games under his belt.

The other way to look at Baker/Graham/Owies recruitment is as a culture subsidy we unfortunately had to pay for in draft position.

I can see the logic in taking the hit, as there's no point in drafting a bunch of kids if they're not learning the right lessons.

We all witnessed the lazy efforts by senior players last year.
I think this is a given that that's a big part of why Baker was drafted. We could have got him without coughing up pick 3.

Don't sneeze at a 4th best mid. You have to be real good in a top 4 side to be the 4th best mid. But if that 4th best mid in a top 4 side is the second best mid in a side, then that team is bottom 8.

Another example of us drafting a tall and trying to make them into a midfielder. He is clearly a 3rd tall forward. He is basically same size and build as Georgiades (think Georgiades is 1cm taller but) . He kicked 34 goals in VFL prior to us taking him... Perhaps he should be given the chance to klick 34 goals instead of thrown into the midfield

Strikes me as another example where instead of picking up Owies to play forward and Hutchinson to play midfield we should have picked up a midfielder like Parfitt to play midfield and a forward in Hutchinson to play forward.... Crazy I know

Twomey reporting that Sam Draper is an unrestricted free agent but is happy in Melbourne and expected to re-sign. We should be able to substantially outbid all clubs, especially if Reid and Allen depart. He would be a significant improvement on our current ruck stocks and would give our developing mids a better environment in which to compete. If we haven’t already we should be making an enquiry with his manager.

We won’t sign a Free Agent if Oscar leaves as it affects the compo we receive for losing him.

It would have meant we still drafted Shanahan, just at 17 instead of 30 FFS. The club then would have drafted Boxshall at 30.

Now while I think Davis is much less of a chance of becoming a very good player than boxshall, you're essentially swapping Hawks 2025 R1 and R2 for Boxshall instead of Davis.
Would we have traded pick 17 to North Melbourne for their 2025 first rounder instead of them trading with Richmond?

Why we sign man with teenage haircut?

We should have done it last year when the list of free agents was 10x better

Id have offered Peatling 6 year 5 mill deal as a example. Id have given Alex Davies double what Gold Coast did. Id have also looked to make a over the top offer for Riley Garcia to and have that be the 3 we got and not well Baker/Graham/Owies. I also would have given Parfitt a deal and not well Rawlinson

We have saved up this 2 mill for the maybe in Chad Warner and then spent 800k in the not needed in Liam Baker. We should havd ignored this and went for younger players who would come now plus be a better long term proposition. Id have simply spent it already and been absurd when we did so to make sure it happened

Peatling went for a 2nd rounder, Davies would have been third. Garcia would have been free in the Owies type deal. All of that and still have pick 3.

Everyone knows this was the better approach except for well Don Pyke and Matt Clarke and this absurd belief that we could compete now

Really impressed with Horne-Francis last night. Has pace, skills, nous and great work ethic. Any similar mids coming down the draft pipeline?

Next week he will have none of those things.

Horn flog in full flight is good, but half the time he's a sook, has no work ethic, no 2nd efforts and borderline gives up mid game. He's got a long way to go with raising his floor and being more consistent. 4th year player.

Athletically I totally agree. He can get the ball inside and take it to outside, breaks lines, good overhead etc etc. Only downside with explosive players is the inevitable injuries they'll get. See Yeo and Shuey.

I admire that Liam baker looks to care about the club and works hard and can handle the ball cleanly but I’m sorry to say that anyone who disposes the ball like Liam baker should never be getting a $800kcontract.

Terrible skills is clearly an issue at the club and we went out and traded our top pick And gave a big contract to compound that problem.

he is actually quite a poor tap ruckman.
great appetite for the contest but he is really not what we need at all.

He would be leading our BnF at the moment. Without him and Graham we would of lost by 100+ points in a few games already. What's the problem with a big contract when he's close to our best player and no one else is on big money?

We did well in this years draft, nearly every play is looking like they'll make it and Gross is playing like a top 10 pick. Grossy has shown more than Draper so far which is impressive considering he's less physically developed.

I’d be doing that with Davies this year as well if his form continues, he ain’t getting in that midfield, especially if Rowell stays.

Id also be having a crack at Will Powell but not sure if he would want to leave now the Suns look to be competing for the next few years.

He has been shithouse. His disposal matters. Graham has definetly been better

As for B and F Id say its a 10 way tie between a bunch of nothings so far. No one is winning it

There's nothing wrong with Hutchinson's height if he has the tank and agility, 190 is pretty standard for top tier midfielders.

But as for trying to adapt people who play other positions into mids, yeah, it is one of our recruiters go-to 'we are smarter than the market, we don't need no stinking top 10 picks' moves (along with selecting promising juniors who have slipped in the draft order due to injury concerns and believing they will magically fix themselves as soon as we pick them, cf Chesser, and Burgiel)

I feel like 90% of it is about thinking they can replicate the success they had in turning Yeo from a half back into an onballer, but with Ginbey, Baker and now Bo Allen you'd be excused for think that as soon as our recruiters read 'half back who can play midfield' they're all in.

When you add to it 3 years of playing Kelly, a natural wingman, in the engine room, throwing Duggan into the centre, you'd be excused for thinking West Coast sees 'onball' as a sort of afterthought role that anyone can play rather than the most important, most difficult position on the ground.

Which is nuts, both because if someone isn't a full time midfielder as a junior there's probably a good reason why, and because so much of midfield dominance is about synergy that develops when people play together over a long time.

They'll probably have to give the B+F away to charity this year.

2021 Nic Naitanui
2022 Tom Barrass
2023 Tim Kelly
2024 Jeremy McGovern
2025 St Vincent de Paul

100% this.

We should have made Tim English the godfather offer.

We're now left with Flynn who can't perform in the 1's and Williams who can't run out 4 qtrs.

We really should be looking at a player like Steele Sidebottom this year to come across in that coaching/playing hybrid role on not big $ and a good trade price. Dayne Zorko would be another option too. Both have been there when squads have been where we are and seen it come back. Both know the standards required.

Tim English?

You know WB have been searching for another ruckman for a reason, right?

Bloke can't win a ruck contest to save his life.

With ruck situation so many levers to pull. You just gotta pull one of them.

The big issue overall was keeping Jamieson/Barnett. Barnett should have never got a new deal and Jamieson should have been paid out. Within that 2 spots free something should have been done. Some options we had

  • Bring Ned Reeves in as steak knives for the Barrass deal
  • Sign Max Knobel or Liam Reidy
  • Give Tim English huge money

At present we have 2 people who have about as much chance of getting a game as well me on our list wasting 2 spots on nothing.

This goes both ways . Everyone wants to pin all this pressure on a bloke whose only 2 games in and making his way in the league. Fans need to cool their jets and stop fapping over even the slightest bit of positivity we have to obscene levels just because we have so little else to get excited about

The guy could make it or he could not. Its 2 games. Lets cool our jets and stop marking him as some form of saviour

Hewett was the same last year. People earmarked him down as a 200 gamer based on nothing to only be disappointed when he hasnt met the absurdly high expectations set for him by some. Guy is legit 2+ years away from being ready given his injury issues so lets all calm down

If Pyke/Clarke/Simmo only got the pressure Tom Gross has on his shoulders perhaps we wouldnt be in the position to pile pressure on Tom Gross

You should celebrate performances of young guys when they come along.

Big difference between Gross and Hewett is Gross is based on actual output and performance, Hewett is based on vibes and potential.

I’m not saying Gross is the next coming. I’m saying what he’s done in the midfield jn the last couple of weeks without much support is commendable and shows great promise.
