Rumour Noah Balta assault charges

The only thing I can agree with Tigers fans on is Bendigo Barbie. Our premier.

Screaming and shouting from her soapbox about Richmond playing Balta and sending the right message... While the state under her and Dictator Dan's watch has seen crime and violence soar.

She should stay in her lane and fix the state that's riddled with crime under her watch.

The same media who seem to unanimously agree that the swans kid who threw and missed with a piece of cardboard at Allir that a 2 year venue ban from supporting his club was fair.

Older you get , more you realise what a boys club and how corrupt most stuff is. Disgrace of a league at times

The difference to how Tarryn Thomas was punished by the AFL to Balta is interesting

Reckon the courts have got the sentence about right here

Jail for a first offence would be OTT and not in line with what other first offenders get

But it was a serious assault with possibly very serious consequences, so a good behaviour bond or similar would not be appropriate

The curfew is a form of home detention, it is a deprivation of liberty, like jail, but not as serious as jail

The AFL / Richmond sanction of four weeks seems a bit light given he’d have got a lot more than that if it had happened on a football field, but I guess if you see it as an extra punishment, and the legal sentence being the main punishment you could kind of justify it

Don't have a problem with the legal punishment. It's pretty much what everyone else would get.

Problem is AFL haven't suspended him for the year with no pay. I thought they were against violence in the community? Hypocrites

Why is jail OTT for an extremely serious and violent assault?

TT got 18 matches, right?

Hard to compare the circumstances, but Balta’s 4 weeks does seem light whether or not it’s compared to other people’s situations

You’d be pretty surprised then the kinds of criminal records rolling around with ankle monitors or kicking back on home detention.

Overall I agree with stricter sentencing, noting I lived in Alice Springs for many years and had been king hit 3 times myself walking in town. Do you support mandatory sentencing?
King Hitting someone. Given it can kill people, potentially.

Now that he's been sentenced and everyone's had plenty of time to vent.....
Any chance they could release the footage of the minutes leading up to the incident? Or has it mysteriously been mislaid?
Yes, I'm a Richmond supporter (que abuse...) but I'm likely in a minority that I don't have any outrage either way.
It’s going to be obvious, but does it really matter? If the victim had assaulted a member of Noah’s party we’d have heard about it. He likely mouthed off, big deal, ignore him.

OMG... how many times do we have to hear someone could have died... when they didn't? We're dealing in actualities. The judge didn't even accept that there was a high risk of death.

Maybe unfollow this thread. You're not convincing anyone by repeating the same thing over and over.
Patrick Cronin’s Father says hello.

It's done and dusted. I look forward to watching him play the rest of the season and help the Tige's rebuild.

All we've got left now is our persistent ressentiment. And we shall seek another target for it hither, and thither. And soon enough we will find another place to point it. And so it goes on. Until we can self-affirm and master our own lives, and our ressentiment shall be gone.

Agree, dont know what you said , but i just ordered a pizza and the uber drivers name is Mariah. One sweet day

I know this is anecdotal but...

Friend of a friend assaulted an Uber driver (after a disagreement). Similar circumstances; (video footage of incident), first offence, not premeditated, family man and gainfully employed.

He is currently serving his sentence in prison in WA.

Maybe we have tougher laws in WA?
Yes, I honestly think we do.

Disagree, TT was suspended after a third charge, and the third charge included a long list of offenses of a similar nature to his first re: violence towards women.

It was done after repeated behaviour.

So sure, if Balta goes and punches someone up again then give him a long suspension or even jail time.

I’m guessing you don’t then. If mandatory sentencing was introduced, the parliament, who you get to vote in/out, set the sentences. That way if you’re unhappy with first offence assault not resulting in jail, you can vote for someone who has that as policy.

Anyone complaining about lenient penalties should be in favour of mandatory sentencing. It’s the only way to have the decision makers be representative of the community view. Judges are famously out of kilter with community expectations.

I agree it was a serious violent crime

I also think we shouldn’t send people to jail if we can avoid it

Yes, jail can be a deterrent for some people, but it can also make some things much worse, and some people come out much more violent than they went in

So I’m OK with first time offenders not getting a jail sentence for what Balta did

If he was a repeat offender, or if someone was seriously (permanently) injured or worse killed then yes he’d need to get a jail sentence

I understand a lot of people don’t agree with me, and would like to see everyone who commits a crime get the maximum sentence, but I think it is a balance and that they probably got the balance about right here

Just my opinion

How many jails do you want built? How many incarcerated individuals would you like to see? Because it's worked so well in the US (and other places).

Fact is all assaults are serious and violent, but some are more serious and violent. All you've done is see the assault and brain-farted "that individual belongs in jail" without recognising that the individual is
  • a first-time offender
  • handed himself into police
  • remorseful
  • pleaded guilty
  • compensated the victim
  • gainfully employed
  • unlikely to re-offend
  • has solid character references
  • undertaken training and counselling
  • has the support of the victim and the victim's lawyer to resume his football career, which would imply they did not see a custodial sentence as appropriate

24 year old man with no learning disability or mentall illness.
Bunch of excuses lawyers use. Absolute rubbish.
Should have been prisoned if we were serious.

First time offender - ok no record means you can bash a bloke without cause.
Handed Himself in - only after realising video was out there. meaningless.
remoseful - is he? Does that matter? whoops i killed a bloke drunk as F behind the wheel. Im remorseful so no prison.
Compensated - what with cash? so rich people have the right to bash people when they like.ok got it.
Employed - so anyone with a job can bash people. right.
unlikely to reoffend - future predictors too these judges. So no prison cause "he promises to not do it again" LOL
solid references - friends say he a good man.
Victim says ok now he paid off. Probably scared too. see previous re rich people.

break down the BS and its laughable. why couldnt they have given 10 days? Just 10 days wouldve done heaps for society. and $3k is a joke when this guy makes $600k a year? maybe more?

When are we gonna get serious?
Youre right this happens 100 times every night around the state, much worse, but it happens because of these piss weak judgements.
Alcohol is a terrible drug. When the govt makes MDMA, Mushrooms legal and alcohol limited the world will be a better place.
