Marathon runners run on hard surfaces, it's not as cotts would be doing stairs in boots

Yes, marathon runners, especially those who regularly run on hard surfaces, are at a higher risk of developing musculoskeletal problems later in life, including stress fractures, shin splints, and knee or hip issues, due to the repetitive impact.

Idk mate. Personally would prefer the softer surfaces myself.

Plenty of sports use stairs for building cardiovascular, leg strength and power

I doubt players would be doing it for 2 hours a day, everyday

True. I just go on what I been told over the years. Soft flat ground is less impact. I guess I see it more as the injury risk increases doing stairs like that. I thought Cottrel was coming back from an ankle injury also.

The landing of the foot when running stairs is completely different to running on flat surfaces. Far less impact on joints and is generally used to help develop your leg drive and improve your running gait.

My friend used to do a bucket load of stair running as part of his training regime representing Australia and VIC in a few different events over the years.

The footage on Fox Sports news tonight of Harry training (can't 100% guarantee that it wasn't archival footage but purported to be from today) showed Cotts training with the main group.

Stair runs aren’t as bad as running on hard surface.

Taps rather than full foot plants.

They’re fine.
Yeah, and the downstairs component flies in the face of your logic. It's not the end of the world, but if their technique is sloppy it's not something you want them to be doing for more than a few minutes.

I understand stair runs are a thing for ankle-related physio at a certain point in time in the recovery process, but surely there's an updated protocol by now? There's small hills and slopes just outside the ground, there's wooden steps around... use those!

Marathon runners also have extremely good running technique and focus on nothing else, while also having shoes handpicked for shock absorbance for their needs and practically wear new ones every other week.

When along this morning to have a look at the viewing session, thankfully no loud music that seems to be part of the open training sessions. First player out was Charlie Curnow not wearing a number of his training singlet, but had to miss even though he spent his time on the other side of the ground. Charlie along with Weitering, and Cottrell appeared to be on light duties, doing their own thing. During the session Newman and Fantasia, also came out and did some running and kicking with each other and the trainers. Newman seemed to be moving well and there was no sign of strapping on his knee.

Cincotta, Duffy and Cowen were in the main group and completed all of the session, as did Sam Docherty who didn't play a game on the weekend at AFL or VFL level. There was a young tall bloke wearing No. 47, I think is Dane Harvey from the VFL squad who was training with the group. The only player I expected to see but didn't spot was Nick Haynes.

They trained pretty solidly for 2 hours, I thought the effort and intensity was pretty good, with minimal contact. Lots of drills practicing moving the ball, while a group in different coloured tops tried to stop them. There were other drills with all the forwards, all the defenders and the midfield in different groups, working on clearances or roving the ball off of marking contest, etc. As things wound down a small group of players did a series of run throughs, I lot of the younger guys worked on their kicking - the Twins and the Irish boy's, plus a few others. While most of the rest took shots at goal, before heading off the track.

I would be trusting high performance, fitness and medical experts overs armchair critics on a faceless forum
I'd like to agree with the above statement but I've seen complete morons installed as managers, simply because they don't question decisions, not because they have any idea of what they are doing.

Terry from Blue Abroad was at the closed training session and he saw the collision Charlie had with TDK - said Charlie grabbed at his left knee but that he was only sore and not injured and walked off the field limping

But more interestingly he mentioned that Nic Newman is coming along nicely and much better movement than last time he saw him - and believes he will play this year
