No doubt Draper has struggled but played in the 2s and had 28touches with 17 contested, not sure what more you want from him. We seen enough with Berry, too many negatives to be a premiership piece.

This is the perfect chance to debut Edwards, or move Cumming to half back, but he goes back to the well picking a washed Smith who is only on the list due to a contract clause.

1. Smith as a senior player on the list needs to be found out as whether he is going to be a contributor or like Murphy get a line ruled through his name and moved on. So he needs to audition players.

Nicks doesn't deserve grace here. That he still has a question mark on if Smith and Murphy (and Sholl, and a case can be made for Berry) can be effective contributors is an indictment. A competent coach (and sufficiently ruthless list management team) would have ruled a line through these guys last year (arguably even earlier, in some cases).

I am going against the narrative here. I dont mind the changes.

1. We want to play finals so Nicks is selecting the best players he can to fulfill that objective. Smith as a senior player on the list needs to be found out as whether he is going to be a contributor or like Murphy get a line ruled through his name and moved on. So he needs to audition players.

2. The omission of Draper. I dont think anyone can argue at times he has failed to contribute. Its his first year, I dont have a problem with him going back to the Sanfl for a few games. If we are aiming for finals, it makes development hard as by having Curtin and Draper in the side is like being one experienced player down in the side. Could we really expect to carry them both through every game and make finals?

3. Now for the good news. Nicks lives and dies through these selection. By dropping Draper he removes development as an excuse and the selection of Fogarty and Smith, two senior players plus Butts and Berry both relatively well experienced does mean Nicks can hardly blame injuries either for a loss. So this week is fair and square a battle of the game plans, coach v coach etc.

Nicks needs to audition Smith?

What? You don't audition 33 year olds.

Bloody hard for Draper to contribute when he's been subbed in 5 of his 7 games and otherwise played significant time as a forward

He needs some full games. In the full games he played he hasnt done much and disappeared for a lot of it. Showed glimpses of what he can offer though. But until we get it consistently can we truly carry him through games, combining with Curtin who is also disappearing for large chunks. I dont mind him going back to the Sanfl for a few weeks. He will be back.

Its a fair assessment. Can we really argue he deserved to be selected other than on potential though. You cant carry potential into every game and expect to win. He really has not performed. He would know that. Going back to the Sanfl for a few weeks to get a few full games under his belt and practice running patterns I think will make him better for it.
Thats a simpleton's perspective. Somewhat akin to Nicks actually. Meanwhile, how many CBA's has he had? How much TOG has he had? As susual, we've not committed to playing him, and played him out of position when we have. Another mid about to get burnt by the Crows trademark development plan.

Draper out is ok. Its R8, he has had a decent stretch (far better than the average 3 year SANFL stint before debut we subject draftees too).

This only holds as long as he is back in the next week or two. If Nicks thinks a month off is ok he can get in the bin

We've kept Draper off the field and out of the middle long enough for his form to suffer

Now we can drop him

Mission accomplished

Curtin... you're next.
You don't put trust or faith in these scumbag young guys like playing them in the middle, a bit even.
They can't handle it. :$

How will we also keep that old club tradition going, set many moons ago!

It's all so predictable, I told people Smith will come in with full faith in it happening.

He's been sub in 4 of his first 7 games. Absolutely criminal.

Our club actively screws up midfield development. Nicks sucks but Van Berlo sucks just as much.

How many quarters has he actually played in those 7 weeks?

(Won't even ask in which position)

This is crazy talk.
Youre better off carrying young talent than you are experienced, unaccountable hacks.
Otherwise you just end up with more of the same, just older.

Im not arguing but the objective is to make finals is it not? the team we just put out on the park which was close to his best 23 got smashed by fremantle. So wtf do we want to do. Bring in kids or senior players? its finals or not. We bring in Edwards and Ryan and Keep Draper, Curtin and Taylor are we giving ourselves the best chance to win against Carlton and achieve that objective. If you want Nicks to rule line through every experienced player you deem not up to scratch we are developing and not playing finals. Its that simple. Take your pick.

This idea that where a recruit has played all of his junior footy is irrelevant at AFL level is so ****ing stupid.

Gun midfielder? Forward pocket.

Unless your Curtin - then it's full back 😅

God I hate this loser Club sometimes.

He is selfishly selling our future because of his delusional belief that more experienced players no matter how cooked they are of more value in the side than our current crop of youngsters. The worst thing about it is its all done because he thinks it will save his job. The guy is a fraud to the core.

man, insults really? that doesnt make your argument. be better.

doesnt take away from the fact he needs full games. hate on nicks not me, ****en hell.

Maffew is clearly desperate to win this game. And ok, we have dropped a game more than we should have (5-2 was par) so I get that.

But in what universe does he think Brodie is the guy to make that happen?

Nicks is an idiot and it isn't up for debate.

Matthew's desperation selections lead to losses and then eventually he starts picking the team better after the season is done
