Review Cats hang on by 3 points to beat Pies

Just watched the game. Mixed feeling, feel like if we were to play that game a few bunch of times, we don't win too many of them. Collingwood's forward efficiency was shit for all but the last 4 minutes.

Truth be told we were lucky to be in it, then we almost blew it. We can't base our season's fortunes on Dangerfield doing that week in week out. We did plenty right and plenty wrong.

Pushed Stanley for one week too many, and we'll have to cop that loss for a bit now. Duncan was really rusty, but still adds something. His positioning is still there. Mullin played such an old fashioned role on Daicos, Daicos was pissed. Neale just does things that gives me confidence that he'll make it. O'Connor has hit a sneaky purple patch down back.

In the end it is a great win when so much of what we are is still misfiring. Banking these types of wins help make a season.
We're so compact on defense for much of the game, letting the opposition run wild with the space almost wondering if we're doing it deliberately to tire them out.

i see you post here quite a bit, it says your club is gws but your post seem otherwise?

If you play it a bunch of times do we get stewart, miers, j.henry back in the team and not lose our ruckman in the first qtr?

If we can beat GWS at home next week - which is usually a difficult proposition - we will have come through a tough opening run to the season in good shape, especially given our injuries.
6-3 with 7 games left at Geelong and a draw that opens up would be a great outcome.
This is where cashing in on home games is key though. We would waste last night's fantastic result if we lost to the Giants next week.
HUGE game coming up.
They play well at KP from memory. Not an easy gig.

Pre-2022 we had a troll problem here, were we had people just consistantly post anti-Scott diatribes (check out the six part probably 1000 + pages of Scott threads), flood the board with posts when we lost, disappear when we won. If they had their club set as Richmond or Hawthorn they would have been banned almost straight away. Instead they just messed with the vibe for years. I changed my club to demonstrate how easy it was to set your club as pretty much anything.

Name better Geelong players than Dangerfield in your lifetime?

It will be a very short list and only contain Abletts unless you are very old.

Joel Selwood?

One of those guys who proclaimed our success was over in about 2010, and has had a monumental chip on his shoulder about us ever since.
Wasn’t that Tim Lane?
King is/was always all over the shop. One week you’re premiership favourites the next you are in a crisis and need to rebuild.

McRae speaks well, he’s a likeable coach. Don’t think he’ll lose to much sleep tonight over the game, they controlled the game but he did admit we are hard to play against, I’ve always thought we match up well on Collingwood and tonight proved that.

Yeah, last two weeks have been an interesting contrast.

Carlton seem to match up really well on us and/or make us play well below our capability, Collingwood the opposite.

That said, I'll happily admit to thinking we didn't have the team to get over the line last night.

Yeah Tim Lanes "Days of domination are over" call before we went on to win by 100+ was great.

King's was 2011 when we won the flag after he said we couldn't.

A brilliant fighting win with PFD conjuring memories of Joel Selwood and a change of approach mid match providing dividends.

One rant though, why is the umpiring only an issue when something goes Geelong's way? Where was the free kick analysis in the fourth quarter last week and the third quarter in Brisbane? David King and Barricking Gary Lyon are flogs of the highest order.

Lyon has softened on us massively now he's engaged to a Geelong supporter and her family. He hated us for years before that, I think it was from Snr belting him.

There was also a game against Richmond about 5-6 years ago where we were 13 points down at half time and King was like "It's a long 13 points" - we ended up kicking something like 13 goals to 2 in the 2nd half and won by 10 goals.

At the moment or ever? We had Selwood doing it but Danger is twice as big. Pies defenders were looking over their shoulders for him in the last quarter last night, haven’t seen that for a long time, and not sure I’ve ever seen that for a fair player. Reminiscent of the Lockett Ablett days.
Voss Mathews Dipper today JHF.

Yep, just like last night when he said the Cats are 20 points down but it feels like 40.

Just because you want it to be 40 doesn’t mean it is, Kingy.

It was definitely HTB. He made no attempt to dispose of the ball. That should be HTB every single time. I was impressed that the umpire had the stones to call it in such a big moment.
That is a very literal interpretation of a written rule, not the way it is applied in practice. Applying it that way would result in dozens more HTBs per game.

He doesn’t care either.

See him get into Maynard during the game? And when he ran off after their little push and shove, Baz wasn’t angry - he was laughing and rubbed Maynard’s head. Confused the hell out of Maynard.
It always takes me while to warm to players recruited from other clubs. As an example, as good as Isaac Smith was for us, I still feel like he is more Hawthorn than Geelong. But this new Smith has completely won me over in, what, 6 games. He is infectious, both playing wise and personality. I reckon this is rubbing off on the others too. Bailey Smith is already a bone fide Geelong man. "better than Ballarat" haha

I think we lost one where Hawkins kicked a point in the rain against GWS. That’s the only one that comes from mind.

Collingwood in 2022 would have a few after the siren wins I think.
Hawkins was a draw. Harry Taylor against bulldogs was a miss to lose.

Have watched the last few mins a couple of times now and I still think the HTB against Blicavs was rough. I can't imagine they would have been paid at any other point of the game except in the dying seconds, with the crowd roaring and the Pies desperate to get it forward.

Imagine if it's the Cats down by less than a kick with 30s to play and Darcy Cameron gets tackled under identical circumstances. Would that get paid HTB? Not a chance in hell.

Harry Taylor missing vs Bulldogs is another

If anyone hasn't yet, do yourself a favour and listen to Danger's KRock interview: https://www.krock.com.au/match-audio/

Absolute classic!

I'm 100% sure I'll never see another captain like Selwood in my lifetime, but Danger's a pretty good successor.
Agree that Joel is THE club legend, but even he couldn't do the things Patrick did last night. In 50 years of watching the Cats, that game by Danger was as close as the way Gary Ablett (Snr ofc) at his best used to dominate games and make everyone around him look like schoolboys in comparison. If you never saw Ablett play in person (and youtube highlights are nothing like it), well, now you know what it was like. And Danger is an all round nice guy, not the very flawed individual that Snr was.

I am hoping COS will fill the void in excitement when PFD has to retire. That kid looks like he might be able to!

What is our record like over the past 20 odd years for games decided after the siren? Feels like whether it is us with the shot, or the opposition we win them all.

Our results after the siren in the 21st century:

Wins

1. Riccardi's goal against Carlton in 2002
2. Johnson's miss for the Bulldogs in 2009
3. Bartel's point against Hawthorn in 2009
4. Hawkins' goal against Hawthorn in 2012
5. Mundy's miss for Fremantle in 2014
6. Smith's miss for Hawthorn in 2016
7. Tuohy's goal against Melbourne in 2018
8. Rohan's goal against Western Bulldogs in 2021
9. Crisp's miss for Collingwood in 2025

Draws

1. Hawkins' point against GWS in 2017

Losses

1. Egan's miss against Melbourne in 2005
2. McGrath's goal for Brisbane in 2013
3. Harry Taylor's miss against the Bulldogs in 2018
4. Max Gawn's goal for Melbourne in 2021
