Shown some very good glimpses amongst some quiet games. Agree a breakout game is coming and congrats to Nicks and the coaches for playing him each week even when having multiple sub 10 possession games in a row. A big sign of confidence in the young fella which would be appreciated by Dan.

Very likely he extends for 2-3 years before the start of next year. Weagles are diabolical. Assuming Allan and Reid leave they may end up with picks 1,2 (FA compo), another first round pick AND more for Reid. Can’t imagine they would do it but wonder what Crows fans views are if they offered pick 2 for Curtin.

I read yesterday most top 10 players from 2023 onwards (first year top 20 players got 3 year initial contracts) are getting 700k ish for subsequent contracts, sounds about right to me. Curtin extended for 2-3 years at 700-800k.

This will be a fair test, Eagles can probably cough up $1.2m/year to return home. That’s going to be hard to say no to. And I doubt that will end up being overs by much, if anything.

Potentially we might have already missed the boat. I have been waiting and waiting for an announcement that he has signed on with us, this contract more than just about any other and here we are halfway through his 2nd year and no extension signed and he is starting to show what a player he will become. Yes we still have next year too, but every week that goes by is only going to make it harder and if we lose him, we will regret it as I think he ends up in the top bracket of players when fully developed.

I’m not really worried about the timing, he’d have been mad to have signed prior to consolidating his spot in the side on output. And it is a 3 year initial contract not even half way through. That said, the overarching worry is that Eagles will almost certainly be able to offer a big chunk more than us.

I'll be concerned if we get to the end of this year and he still hasn't signed. What do we do then? Do we look to trade him while we still have leverage? If he decides he wants to go home next year when he's out of contract and WCE spend another year sucking (which seems likely) then they'll have the threat of walking him to the PSD if we don't bend over and take whatever they see fit to offer.

We do not look to trade him under any circumstance, its not like he's a free agent.

Did you have to pick a WCE player ;)
esp one that killed us with his”white line fever”

without a doubt 2006 is the flag that got away. Trent H, Biglands going down, Roo out and Macca and Birdbrain barely fit playing a “super human” team. More than any other year that’s the one that hurts most

If he is out of contract come the end of next year and wants to head back to Perth, we don't have any say in that and no control other than telling him to go to the PSD if the club he may want to go to offers a deal we like. WCE in particular can hold our feet to the fire and threaten the PSD assuming another down rebuilding year next year and if we are lucky, we might get a future 1st for what could be a very unique and dominating player in the years to come. If we get to the end of this year and there is no movement on him signing on, its going to look bleak for us next year on that front.

Still ridiculous to suggest trading arguably our most talented player a year before we need to.

But by all means, wet the bed.

WCE will be in the doldrums like North Melb have been for many more years to come.

Their list is terrible. They'll lose Reid and Oscar Allen will piss off one would assume

We look to be finally building something (fingers crossed) Hopefully Dan can see this.....

We have an excellent record retaining good players in the last 5 or 6 years. I think it's reasonable to assume we have a good chance, at least until there's something specific to go on beyond just 'he's from WA'.

I was really worried that he may be put back into the seconds due to lack of a position, or being too tall in the forward line, but Nicks has kept playing him, which is awesome.

I am a little worried that he hasn't extended his contract yet, and the club has had offers in front of him for awhile.
I have this feeling that either WC or Freo are going to make a big play for him.
Or he’s just holding out for us to continue to present better offers.

While I generally consider the "why would he sign now" chat to be hopium in these circumstances it's pretty hard to conceive of a circumstance where a player would be less incentivised to sign on at this point.

I think I posted earlier in this thread, he screams like he has a game in him in the next few weeks which would double any contract offer. Feels like he's about to explode.

Saturday night would be a good time

Or, holding out because he's not sure if he wants to stay or not.
There's as much a risk to hold out as there is it increasing your value. If he does a knee then his value will drop. If his form takes a drop, he is worth less.

I personally think he might be holding out to weigh up his future. This isn't anything I have heard, just my own gut feeling.
He still has a WA girlfriend, and WC has continued pushing for him.

I hope I'm wrong as I really like him.

Many questioned his AFL role, last year .....however the unquestioned improvement in Curtin's game in year 2, says we have a Dawson clone of equal ability

15 games into his career, he looks so comfortable ....and his aerial work has come on in leaps & bounds ....it took Dawson 4 years at SYD to breakout

I agree, can see Curtin staying long-term
Maybe a bit bigger and heavier than Dawson though.

This is the key point, they are years off being a contender again.

There will always be big financial offers on the table. In a few years when they come good we could well have missed our chance and that's when he might leave.

On the flip side, not getting your full worth when it is a career which can be cut short at any time - means theres more incentive to get as much as possible early in your career imo.

I'd be shocked if his management havent told him to hold out for a few more months, it would be naive not to.

He's building very nicely. The next step for Curtin will be to push his disposal average up from 10-ish touches to 15-ish touches.

Everything he does is quality, he just needs to do a bit more of it.
This.

I know this board can get a bit jokey about disposals (eg Fogarty) but the more Curtin gets it the better we are.

Milera for example is a player who absolutely needs to get more of the ball to make hius game better - his game against Carlton should be the base, not the exception.

Don't want Curtin to be a 10-15 touch player, where we keep thinking he looks good when he gets the ball and wish he got more of it.

Of course it comes down to where he plays. I'd like him to midfield half forward. Basically a taller James Hird.

Should be pretty easy when we draft Cody Curtin to marshall our backline for the next 13 years at 199cm and a ferocious appetite for contest

🤞
