Player Watch #46: Robert Hansen Jnr - Extends to End 2026

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Watched my first VFL game on the weekend and he was very meh… 21 years old and had it 9 times against a Bomber team with around 6 (?) AFL listed players.

Wouldn’t have been rushing to resign him… is this yet another Brady special?
Very much so

There was no reason to sign him now if at all

If he continues playing like this would be one of the first delisted yet we’ve rewarded him with a contract lol

Nostrils is the epitome of a pick and stick guy. A bloke he lambasted could go on to win a b&f , norm smith and coleman and nostrils would still be calling for their head.
Don’t be silly they would never do that well

Honestly don’t mind extending him albeit early - we can’t keep delisting blokes after a couple of years, let them ride the bumps for a bit and develop and get preseasons into them.
Agree. It's a little early, but we can't keep churning through 8-10 players each year and then deciding on which kids in their 2nd or 3rd year we are going to cut, when young players are consistently inconsistent, and most take at least 4-5 years to develop into AFL footballers from a physical and mental perspective.
I would guess RHJ, Cooper and Payne will get 1 year extensions and the list calls will be made on players who have 5+ years in the system and are what they are.

Re-signed for another year, until 2026.

Still not 100% sold on him, but his improvement has been encouraging.
Ridiculous list management. He will not be a passable afl player. Why?
Hates contact, no pressure amd drops his head. Cant be taught as an adult. Would be delighted to be wrong but i wont be. We have minimum 5 on the list who wouldnt be on any other list. Hes number 1.

Ties with the mining industry is a more challenging proposition. It is and will be for the foreseeable future essential for our economic prosperity. Probably have to find a balance of maintaining a strong relationship, without being completely owned.
Cutting ties with Rupert would bring a backlash them against them through his channels, would have to be prepared for that.
Rupert’s yesterday’s man. Lachlan might be more conservative than his old man, but he’s also less attached to loss-making news companies. Now they’ve lost the trust case against James and Elizabeth, and with Foxtel already in the hands of Blavatnik, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if Lachlan sells most of his Australian media assets off in the next five years.

If that comes to pass, it’ll be fascinating to see what becomes of conservative media in this country over the next decade and how that influences the direction of Dutton’s successor.

Dropping the cost of memberships and making pre-selections fully locally run, is the first thing I'd like to see. Really push a grassroots participatory democracy, that offers something different to Labor. Ideally kick factionalism out of the party at the same time.

I've always been pro nuclear, so I have a bias there. They went too hard promising government built and run reactors, should've just kept at removing the ban on nuclear power so all options can be on the table. I'm not confident solar/wind can completely meet our energy needs, especially with extra pressure on the grid in the coming years.

One party states or uncompetitive duristictions don't work. Plenty of deep blue and red states in the US are examples of that.
Its not just the Libs that are owned by the mining industry. Both majors and the Nats are.

Which is why its a good thing we gave Bobby Jr an extension really.

If you can't see the link between those things you are the problem not me!!!

Sign him in October if his form warrants it. The clock wasn't ticking on this one.
It’s an odd one for sure.
Personally I think there’s a player there but you’d want to see a lot more.
In saying that, one year on what would be modest coin probably isn’t a big deal.

Its the least big deal there is.

I do agree it's early, but at the same time it's slim pickings and for a kid who seems to be a slow burn that gets going once he's comfortable - I don't mind the club backing him in 1 more. Started showing signs last year in the 2s once he got settled in to Melbourne, and that took a little bit of time

He has something 90% of our list doesn’t have - foot skills.

He absolutely needs to harden up on the contested stuff, but 90% of our list do too..

The last two games of 2024 and first two of 2025 he was very good (brilliant in the win over Melbourne).
His improvement curve has been as good as anyone over the past few years and has only a 12 game career.

A one year deal is the least of our worries (except Nostrils of course).

100% Lachlan will look to sell up soon, especially before the ass really falls out of print media. Daily newspapers will likely die out somewhere around 2035-40, and the mastheads will continue online as subscription only.

Blavatnik likely won't care either way about Sky. It will continue if ad revenue and viewership holds up.

We'll likely head in the direction of the US where there are multiple right and left leaning newsites.

Seems to be a polarizing reaction to this extension.
Odd timing with him being out of form, but we need a small forward and his speed and willingness to move about can only be good. Get stuck into contact, and he may turn out good.

Can we get the thread title updated to reflect end 2026

Sure he needs to harden up and assert himself more but it's hard to find confidence when 95% of the team doesn't know what the f*** they are doing.

One year deals on the proviso of ongoing improvement and in and out of the AFL as his performance dictates is an appropriate strategy for a player with his positive attributes.

I really hate seeing how much of a contribution Mason Wood has made to the Saints. We weren't patient enough with him and didn't put in the work where the talent was obvious. Sure we gave him many years but look at what we missed out on! A senior player having an impact ffs.

I agree with what you said generally but not about Wood. We had Mason on the list for eight years!!!

And it took another two before he finally showed something.

Do you think that would have happened under Noble?

6 rookies may have to become 4 if AFL reduces extra list spots. 38 on main list currently I believe (38-6(4)).
Maley, RHJ, Payne (retained), Teakle?, Pink? KD delisted (Max 5 yrs as rookie).
Could upgrade Maley onto the main list and open up a rookie spot for Cooper or retain Pink or Teakle.

38 on the main list, at least 4-5 spots opened for at 3-5 ND/Trade/FA spots.
Bergman, CCJ, Tucker, Ford (delist/trade), Phillips (retain but may explore options), Scott (trade?), Harvey (retain).
Next few years look to turn over guys like Corr, Logue, LMac, Fisher, Parker, Darling etc. but not all at once. Stagger it.

RHJ signing indicates to me that there's going to be another year of the extended rookie list.

Considering we haven’t improved on the ladder I wouldn’t worry about losing those rookie spots

We are closer to getting more concessions than less

Why are people up in angst about us giving him a 1 year extension now ? Ffs it’s 1 year. I think we can afford this . They must be happy with his development / improvement so far.

Scott Claytons parting gift was it?
Scott Clayton should jump up on his desk on his last day and leave a parting gift.

Then he can proudly declare in his farewell "I can honestly say both literally and figuratively I've dropped a big turd on this club".
