If Harley goes and Essendon is the choice id like to see a Godfather offer for Zach Reid. Something that is beyond all logic. 3 year 4 mill type deal.

Its something we really should have done with James Peatling when its all said and done. Throw the money around for the next 2-3 years and tell anyone else whose asking for it to look at the ladder and grow up

If we can bully Essendon back a bit and force them into a 2 firsts + Reid for Harley and a few later picks we can do a good recovery job on this one.

What don't you understand about building the midfield first?

“Just throw stupid amounts of money at it” version 993: Throw stupid amounts of money at a kid that’s missed virtually four full seasons with injury.
Funny isn’t it, same poster has been adamant that our training ground is the reason for all of our injuries over the last few years.

Why would we want to “just throw stupid amounts of money” at an injury prone bloke that will be broken by our training ground.

Lachlan Blakiston could be a rough chance MSD , 26 yr old 203cm ruckman.
Archie Caldow , 19 yr old Victorian playing for Peel , 193cm midfielder clubs are showing an interest in Caldow.
Doubt we would take a ruckman but Caldow might be a surprise chance still very young.

We won't be drafting anyone outside of WA in the MSD. The talent isn't there to move someone across the country for 6 months.

But someone like Parfitt wouldn't surprise.

There was plenty of talent available in the young gun series. We’ll have pick 1. Someone will be worth giving a year and a half on the rookie list.

Last time we took someone from WA in the MSD was 2021

Also because we likely have pick 1 there’s every chance we’ll draft someone who’s nominated an 18 month contract like Culley, Maric and Hutchinson all did

I know brew is older, but to your 18 months rookie nomination, I would still be looking for someone who can win clearances and level the midfield problems we have for the next 2 seasons. His professionalism and leadership and ball winning capacity is the stop gap we need.

I also like Tom Evans, 20, who is a longer term player worthy of a spot, but does he move the needle in our midfield now.

If we have 2 spots, take both

There appear to be two primary schools of thought when it comes to our forward list management strategy, both on here and in the media. The position you take largely shapes your perspective on the upcoming Mid-Season Draft and also our end of year recruitment / trading strategy

Camp 1: All-In on Youth
This strategy centres on fast-tracking a young core by exposing them early to the highest level. The focus is on collective development, underpinned by a strong coaching framework and a long-term vision.
  • Prioritise high-ceiling talent under the age of 24.
  • Aim to get players to their first 50 AFL games as quickly as possible.
  • Immediate results are secondary, the primary objective is to build a premiership-contending list within a 3–5 year window.
  • Hawthorn is likely the benchmark for executing this strategy successfully.
  • North Melbourne serves as a cautionary tale, illustrating the risks of relying solely on youth without sufficient support structures or leadership.
Camp 2: Balanced Development with Experienced Support
This approach values the development of young talent but believes it is best achieved through strong on-field leadership, a winning culture, and the integration of seasoned players.
  • Still target young talent (<24), but complement them with mature, AFL-ready bodies.
  • Recruited experienced players must bring leadership, professionalism, and a mentoring mindset.
  • A focus on winning now helps establish high standards, build belief, and accelerate development.
  • Geelong is seen as a model here for their ability to blend youth with experience.
  • Essendon shows the risks of just trying to push trading, falling into the “mid-table trap” and having to pivot in recent years
The key here I think is that these philosophies are not entirely mutually exclusive, however, sitting in the middle between both strategies I think is the real danger. The balanced model (Camp 2) becomes especially difficult to implement without that strong culture in place while an aggressive youth-focused rebuild should not overlook the value of fostering a winning culture. The growth of young players can be significantly enhanced by surrounding them with experienced players who have the right mongrel competitiveness and a hate for losing.

So after all that, I don't mind the idea of bringing a Parfitt / Brew type player in if they have the right attitude and help our young talent reach their potential. I think the key here is that we have be far more targeted on which player gives us this and not just bring in role players in that bracket. Push the all in on youth strategy but don't be afraid to bolt in another Graham or Baker type (at the right price...).

Anyways will be interesting to see which path we take and I think the MSD and especially the trade period will point the direction the club is going.

Pay out TKs contract and tell him to nominate for the MSD if he wants to have the chance to end the year on an AFL list.

In the MSD, pick the best available kid, then an experienced head for the wafl team.

Camp 1 👍

Would seem pointless to pay him out.
Let him go back to the WAFL and get some form.
If he doesn't he can stay there.

We already have a pick in the MSD.

Every one of these blokes shouldn't be offered a contract for next year, except Oscar but only so we force a compensation pick
  • Tim Kelly (26/7/94) - Signed a 6 year contract (2020-25) in October 2019
  • Dom Sheed (10/4/95) - Signed a 4 year extension (2022-25) in April 2021*
  • Oscar Allen (19/3/99) - Signed a 3 year extension (2023-25) on an existing contract due to expire 2022 in May 2021

Bazzo is a tall who's still young and has been playing well in the WAFL since he's been back.
Otherwise I agree

who are you replacing all these players with?

Bazzo should definitely be retained.

And with the size of that list I'd be inclined to give Chesser one more chance also. I haven't given up on him.
Agree on Chesser. In my view Chesser, Bazzo and Cole are the only OOC players that aren’t a clear re-sign or delist this year.
