I get all that, what I'm doubting is that there's a club out there willing to pay enough to trigger Band 1.
He's a good player. KPFs are hard to find. Some teams are in the window now and don't have time to faff around and draft/develop. The only KPFs that are obviously gettable are Oscar and Uges. Uges is at a "retreat" as well speak. For most people this means going cold turkey in a rehab centre.

This. Chesser will be an available after this week. We should be prioritising chesser over other guys for the back end of this year just as a way to check and see if he can thrive in a new system with a new coach.

He’s a big frame who has speed and a penetrating kick. He should thrive in mini’s system. If we’re considering whether to offer him a deal or not, we need to be sure to atleast give him a last look and a fair shake in a role other than gimp wing.
I personally think just play him in the WAFL this year and give a year extension to see what he’s got as a 23 yr old after a full preseason at AFL level under the new coach.

I think people need to temper expectations on the caliber of player we’re likely to be able to attract to the club. More than likely we’ll finish last with maybe only 2 or 3 wins to our name so we aren’t screaming destination club right now

Over the last four years (2021 onwards) these are the players we’ve been able to recruit:

• Sam Petrevski-Seton - wanted to come home and was traded for pick 52 in 2021. Delisted in 2023
• Jayden Hunt - signed as a FA in 2022 seeking more game time and a better contract than Melbourne were offering. Is out of contract this year and may or may not be renewed
• Matt Flynn - signed as a FA in 2023 seeking more game time and a better contract than GWS were offering. A 50/50 chance to be offered a contract at the end of next year when this deal expires
• Tyler Brockman - wanted to come home and was traded for picks 44 and 63 in 2023. Contract expires next year
• Jack Graham - signed as a FA in 2024 despite Richmond offering a similar 4 year deal and Jack having no ties to WA
• Liam Baker - wanted to come home and was controversially traded for pick 14 in 2024 on a 5 year deal
• Matt Owies - steak knives in the pick 3 trade last year for a better contract than Carlton were willing or able to offer

In that same time frame, we’ve unsuccessfully pursued-
• Tim English (FA)
• Chad Warner
• Deven Robertson
• Lloyd Meek
• Nick Bryan
• Jordan Sweet
• James Peatling

There’s probably more but those are the ones I can think of

The only real player of genuine quality we’ve secured was Liam Baker - a WCE supporter growing up who wanted to come home and only committed when his former assistant coach was appointed as senior coach. He cost us a lucrative 5 year deal and pick 14

Other than that it’s been a couple of low profile players returning to WA and some free agents plus Owies (admittedly with no WA connections) who were offered better contracts to cross over to WA. With the exception of Graham, their former clubs weren’t devastated at their departure

We’re a hard sell at the moment so our best chance is attracting fringe players wanting more opportunity- the type of players that can help fill a role/carry the load for 2-3 years whilst our youngsters develop. They’ll help lift our floor but do little to raise our ceiling

The big names likely choose somewhere else - and would demand trade capital we’re arguably better taking to the draft
Couldn't even lure Dev Robbo. That's a burn if I ever saw one.

We've seen a decent amount of Chesser and he hasn't been good at AFL or WAFL level. Personally I'm like 95% sure he's really bad. Maybe it's worth keeping him another year to be totally sure but not excited about it.

A hill I'll die on is that Cole is underrated. At worst he provides some good depth on the list that has very little and is a useful stop gap until someone actually pushes him out of the team.

A decent amount being 1 fit season? He’s played 7 wafl matches

Hasn’t had a decent run at it. Played on the gimp wing. Went as a late first rounder for a reason as opposed to pick #78.

He should get another opportunity before others as there’s plenty to cull. Would like to see a full season with him under Mini.

Josh Sinn has only really cracked into the port line up this year and was who Port took in the pick swap with West Coast

Crazy how tall these youngens are now days. Thought bloke was 5'7

I think we might be doing that thing (again) where we overrate our players who are unavailable. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and all that

Good luck to Chesser though, he would have to be the player I am cheering for the most to get himself off the delist pile. 100% Give him all the chances we can this season

I think most on here are eyes wide open when it comes to Chesser. Where people disagree is whether what we have seen from him so far is due to his role as fat side wingman, and whether a change of role would help his output.

It would be somewhat negligent to take a first round draft pick, make them a fat side wingman for 30 games and then cut them lose because they haven't shown enough.

In the eyes of many, it is about opportunity.

He looked ok last year in the WAFL as a mid and from memory not much help in a couple of those games.

WAFL will be good to watch post bye of Chesser, Grego, Hall as the 3 CBA mids (even if Barnett as the ruck) just gotta hope he wins that first tap.

As sad as it is with the state of of list I think we will be tight for list spots with at least 6 draft picks used and 3 likely to be top 10, the 2 x NGA and 1 FS.

You’d think at least 2 trade ins or SSP types.

I’ve been off chesser and still indifferent about him being on the list or not. That said I’m kinda keen on seeing him making a return. We currently need mids and hopefully he gets a look in at the beagles as an inside mid. Had a few decent games there last season if my memory serves me correctly

I've literally never seen a reason why he should have been a late 1st rounder. It's not about disposals and skills either, there's never been any grit, or moments where you take note. Hell i'd settle for a reason for a nice polite clap from the wing.

In fact I often link these two who as far as I am concerned are getting by on "Name". Play a similar game/position tallish and athletic. Bigger and better at age 16, mediocre at 18.

In fact I didn't even have Chesser on a list of possibilities back then and Sinn as a sort of later 2nd rounder due to the hype which I now tune almost completely out. I also, rightly or wrongly, throw Bo Allan in this boat (although I think he's slightly better).

As for the gimp wing argument, even Masten averaged 20+ disposals doing it. If you're a decent player you'll make it work somewhere.

Agenda Setters also going with the Oscar should just sit the rest of the year if he is leaving. Eagles need to protect pick 2

Chess hasn't played under mini yet so will be interesting to see what role he gets given, that said if he can't show anything in the back half of the year he should definitely be delisted

We need to continue cutting the list deeply, last years list changes were good bar the rookie listing of Rawlinson who I still maintain should have been delisted (and his WAFL performances seem to back that up)

I think there are some players that are clear and obvious delists: Jamieson, Rawlinson, Petruccelle and then after that you have two groups of players a) younger guys that through injury/form haven't developed into viable AFL level players as we'd like: Chesser, Bazzo (until 3 weeks ago), Livingstone, and then the second group which is older players who are B22 but probably between 16-23: Hunt, Sheed, Cole, and to a lesser extent Cripps and Kelly.

I'd much rather us cut deep into the 2nd group then the first.

Of all our senior players too many of them take up flanker/outside spots in our AFL team that we should be using to expose young guys to AFL level. Old flankers in a bad team is the quintessential list clogger.

Hunt, Sheed, Cole, Rawlinson, Jamison, Pettrucelle and Allen (Free Agency) would be a good list turnover for this year.

Wonder whether petch gets another extension and surparseses ,Mciness the ultra long lasting clubman

Except Mciness was good at wafl level and petch is trash.

The ultimate **** tease, gives your dong a stroke once every year and FA in between.

Barnett at a minimum to the rookie list. But we should prob cut ties if were being real. Just eat the dead cap.

Sheed and Cripps have to be told to retire.

Petch and jamo we must move on from.

Rawlinson, coen prob gone.

Allen looks likely to leave.

That's already 8 spots. But won't be mad if we move on from cole also.

It's rare (but not unheard of) to delist a contracted player. Why not just let him see out his contract?

You can't move a contracted player to the rookie list so that idea is a non-starter.

I’d like to see Chess played as a defender. Has the speed and size for it I think, and the game is typically easier coming at you. Don’t see him making it as a mid at this stage, but think he could be a solid backman yet.

If his contract triggers Band 1 compo, then our compo pick will be after our first round pick. If we win the spoon that’ll make it pick 2. If we somehow go on a massive tear in the next few months and win a flag, it’ll be pick 19. That’s how the system works.

There’s no situation where the AFL says “well he’s not quite worth pick 2, you can have pick 10”.
In case we didn't all hate Sam McClure enough already, on Footy Classified tonight he's having a whinge about Eagles potentially getting pick 2 for Allen because we've neglected the draft and gone all in for years, now we shouldn't be rewarded for now being so poor.
The idiocy & bias of these Vic w***ers is unbeleivable

1. This is how Free Agency works (and always have) - Band 1 compo gets attached to ladder position.
2. Free Agency since it's inception >10 years ago has never been dependant on a club's prior trading history, so not sure why he's bringing it up now.
3. The only player we've given up a first or second round pick since our flag, so for a whole 7 years, is Kelly. Excluding Baker, because we traded out Barrass at same time so they cancel each other out. And we bought in Baker to make us less crap now, not to chase a flag, so without the trade we'd arguably be worse.
4. Allen is miles better than the other hacks who've recently atrracted top 10 band 1 compo in Ben McKay and Josh Battle.

Nice to see Harley stick the boots in tonight to McClure

hmm I may be wrong but I was quite sure you could move main listed players to rookie whilst contracted. In fact I thought it happend at West coast before.. I may be wrong tho.

In regards to Barnett, what's the point in holding onto him, I like giving kids time to succeed, but he looks like the bust of all busts.. barely food enough for waffles ressies as it stands.

It is absolutely possible to move a contracted player onto the rookie list although it’s not an entirely straight forward process

The club has to delist the player first, then redraft him in the rookie draft

It’s relatively common and something West Coast has done in the past

Have you watched the WAFL?

He's a dead set liability and actually having a negative impact on the beagles. Every list spot is important and we need it to help make the beagles competitive to foster development.

We will also struggle to reach our salary cap floor so eating his contract actually helps us achieve this.
