Fixture Dimma's thought bubble: 2pts only for double up games. Win both, you get 4pts.

I actually don't mind this suggestion at all.

Basically, instead of clubs dining out on mediocre teams and getting 2 easy kills for 8pts(which regularly happens), Hardwick has suggested that double up games should only be worth 2pts.

Win both, you get 4pts, win 1 of the 2 games you only get 2pts.

This would undoubtedly stop some poorer sides making finals because they received some double ups against the cellar dwellers.

I don't mind the attempt to address the imbalance and thinking outside the box can lead to good outcomes.
But it is flawed.

Reason being that as much as it penalises clubs for routine wins against fodder opposition, it on the flip side doesn't fully reward clubs who beat hard opponents twice. As far as I can tell from the article there's no differentiation for ladder position.

Example. Would you be happy receiving just the 4pts for beating Brisbane home and away? If last years bottom sides NM, WCE, Rich were able to pull off an upset and beat the Pies home and away how do we feel about them only getting 4pts for that upset results?

I suggested something similar on here a couple of years back.

This is how I would have it:

Last 17 home and away games each season each team plays every other team once for 4 points.

First 6 rounds you play a double up game for 2 points. But you have to play x amount of young players. So it might be 4 players 21yo and under, another 4 players 23yo and under.

The benefits of this would be:

  • It helps diminish the uneven draw
  • It builds a bridge between the practice matches and the more meaningful 4 point games, allowing teams scope to experiment and perfect elements of the game plan in matches with some real value before going into the season proper
  • It gives the clubs who choose to focus on quality youth a small but real benefit for doing so
  • It gives a 6 match window for the young players of each club to assert their credentials for a spot in the team when the most meaningful part of the h&a season starts
  • It potentially reduces the length of the season for some older players
  • Allows players more time to reach peak condition before the most meaningful part of the home ad away season commences

Negatives: Lots of marquee games are when the weather is good early season, so it would reduce the value of some of those games...Easter Monday, Anzac Day, etc etc.

This is what I was thinking. It would punish teams that plan well and come up with interesting or unpredictable ways to beat 'better' teams.

I thought the Leigh Matthews ideas in the same segment were very wise. However, as a Hawthorn man he is probably forgetting that Sicily would suddenly give away 15 free kicks a game...

Brilliant idea Leigh, agree 100% 👍

Dimma just went out and got ripped to pieces after the Suns last win. His missus said he also put chilli sauce on his oats.

I reckon if you lose to last you should have to relinquish all your points and start again.
that would bring some excitement to those clashes. Eagles would be given the prime timeslots late in the season. Snakes & Ladders. Imagine a ninth narrowly missing finals tanking in the final round to get the #1 pick instead

I'd be pretty pissed off if we managed to beat Collingwood at the mcg this weekend and only got two points for it.
We can agree to cancel the return leg to lessen our horrific travel burden?

What about an up previous years cellar dweller picking up a plucky win against a better side that they have a double up with? Doesn’t really seem fair in that instance.

Should be able to also play a joker up though. three times in the year for double points.

If you lose by less that 12 points you can challenge the oppo to "double or nothing" extra time.

Extra points for wins in Darwin cos it's hard.
Look forward to double or nothing in this year’s Grand Final. Would certainly add some spice in the race to 17 18

I think it would hopefully force the scheduling to change so that cellar dwellers do not have any double ups with the very top sides.

I can see where this would mean that all sides generally collect far less points during the season, making the ladder even tighter.

I worry it would have an unintended consequence of hurting teams that had 1 or 2 good wins regardless of schedule changes.

Whilst WC haven’t been great, I wouldn’t call the rest of the bottom 4 easy beats this year.
