Autopsy Round 10, 2025: Suns get it done against plucky Hawks

The pile on Harry every week is ridiculous.

He had a good game and has had a very good season.

Harry weak in the contest?

Good Lord.

Blokes will be dropped for Brisbane - Harry won't be one of them.

He is best 22 on merit.
You can make valid criticisms of Harry on his athleticism / speed and even his disposal this season has been a little erratic at times but I've never seen him shirk a contest.

In fact pound for pound he's one of the best tacklers in our squad, he is deceptively strong for a guy who would be 80kg soaking wet.

I agree he's putting together a sneaky good season.

He is also the one of the best defensive transition player in our side. He defends the ground so well. Still has the ability to find space when we have the ball. His workrate is second to none

Suns kicked way above their expected score.

We actually competed well with them for a change which is nice.

Main concern for me is Dylan Moore, very out of touch, couldn't handle the ball at all last night.

Felt like he was there to be seen barracking for the oppo to me. Like a statement.

Wasn’t a fan myself
The guy currently wearing #17 for the Suns is a pretty well known indigenous Darwin product, from Darwin footballing royalty…..who happens to be Cyril’s cousin.

There may lie the reason he was keen for a Suns victory, as opposed to wanting a Hawks’ loss.

When you look at it that way it makes sense (to me at least).

Can't be too upset with the result. That ground is terrible to play at in those conditions.

They have three elite midfielders that are the same calibre as Newcombe. We just had Newcombe, with Day being out.

As good as he is Worpel isn't on their level (IMO).

Ward played pretty well, but Mackenzie couldn't get his hands on it. These two really need to step up right now in Nash and Day's absence. Moving forward I hope Mackenzie plays more like the GWS game, and less like this game.

IF Day and Nash were in the side we'd have won that. Even with Nash's poor form leading into his suspension he would still offer a physical presence that was sorely missed - especially with Meek out too.

In the meantime I like Moore spending more time in the middle, he is a good clearance winner.

Probably the best footy we've played in a long time minus the first quarter. We were challenged by very strong opposition with rolled gold talent on every line and challenged by the conditions.

Undermanned. GC were pulling out arsey goals from nowhere. The fall of the ball was not going our way.

I've come out the otherside with a lot more confidence now.

We really need to make a good fist of our next month to try and finish top 4. Drop too many games and we're gonna have to from the lower half of the eight but we've got a LOT of cavalry to come.

Morrison is least of our problems. We need to get Croc and Sic going, if Sic is injured then he needs to rest up and get right cos he’s a complete liability at moment and making life alot tougher on the rest out there right now. Call it what it is.

Agree. Morrison is a good depth option and he has been doing everything asked of him so far this season. Most likely he will be out of the side once (if) we get everyone back, but until then he's earned his spot.

The bigger concern is the form of some of our better players:

- MacDonald stinks and needs to be dropped.

- D'Ambrosio shut out of multiple games. I appreciate teams put work into him as he is very impactful and important to our ball movement.

- Sicily has been our best player for years, but something is clearly off with him. Maybe it's a newer role? Adjusting to Battle and Barrass? Carrying an injury? If it's an injury then he shouldn't be playing.

- CJ. Very inconsistent, hopefully his two games prior is more of a reflection of what we will get, compared to this game. His best and worst is miles apart, we need him to bridge that gap. I suppose that will only likely come with consistent gametime.

Big shoutout to:

- Chol, he's been great this season and is on track for 40 odd goals, despite playing nearly half the season as a lone KPF.

- Ginnivan has been great since being dropped. Kicking goals, working up the ground, setting up teammates and tackling. Last four games:

19.75 touches
5.5 marks
2.75 tackes
7.4 goals

- Watson. Superstar potential. After a slow start to the season (9 goals in 7 games) he is now getting into his groove (8 goals in the last 3 games).

- Weddle. Superstar potential too, and like Watson he started the season slowly, but has been great over the last month or so. We need to find his best position and let him focus on that. IMO that's as a free-wheeling HFF, or on a wing.

- Scrimshaw looked like he hadn't missed a beat. He has completely overtaken Sicily as our best interceptor defender and distributor this season, when he's played that is.

Speaking of blinders, went at 50% in the first quarter, 65% overall

"But Morrison was great"

He was a liability with ball in hand last night

You're wrong.

Disposal efficiency is a mislesding stat. Any kick that goes to 50/50 contest above 40 metres, is considered efficient. Even if you don't retain the ball.

Morrison is AFL average for kick retention. He just looks bad because he plays in the best kicking team in the competition.

His 4% above expectation for kicks that result in a goal.

He's doing this as our 8th best tackler as wing player. He's doing this despite being in our top 3 runners at the club, he's also regularly in the top handful sprinters and repeat sprinters at the club.

Agree the pile on is trash. His first half against gc was very poor and resulted directly in 3 goals for the oppo

Wasn't expecting the 4 points but we took our opportunities and kicked straight so that's a win for me.

I think the cattle weren't the problem. The problem was our inability to combat the forward handball game. We have struggled with this all season especially against the Cats, Port and GWS. And it's not as though we didn't know it was coming this week. It's the same plan Hardwick used at the Tuggers.

Start the 3 lost games with a break even first quarter and the Hawks are undefeated. End of story.

Good enough the win the whole box and dice.

Even most the wins have been poor starts. Got hit the ground running. Can't seem to sort it 10 rounds in.

Lewis walks back in when fit, it's amazing this narrative still remains 😂
You'd assume it'd be Lewis with a combination of Dear and Gunna or Chol.

On the year you couldn't drop Gunston or Chol
It's more that Lewis has just been out so long and had a serious issue that you can't expect him to just come back and be Mitch Lewis. Gunston and Chol as you said cannot be dropped currently, and Dear will show in the next few weeks you can't drop him either.

Normally don’t get drawn into it but can we all agree David King is an absolute kent.. Campaigning against the frees we got on SEN this morning- did he actually watch the game??

Free kick count was 11-5 in the 1st quarter- also some dodgy ones their way in the 2nd that set up the suns with a 4 goal+ lead that was always going to be difficult to peg back…

On top of that - Suns given the lead in the last quarter with a free kick against Scrimshaw right in of goal that could be one of the most disgraceful game altering decisions in AFL history… drives ya nuts doesn’t it
Kingy was shocking with his calls today on SEN. Absolute kent indeed.

Yeah who the f was even talking about drawing head high frees? He's an a grade f wit. Why are we even listening to this old bozo who played the game 30 years ago what input does he even have of value on the modern game? Also just quietly he comes across as trying to be overly macho like he's trying to cover something up.

He has a groin injury

He needs to be rested. Though if Battle doesn't get up he may play again.

If neither are good for the game then we could still cover Morris and Hipwood with Barrass, Sicily and Weddle.

It's their smalls in Cameron, Lohmann, Rayner and Bailey that will cause issues. We'll need Hardwick and Impey on their best behaviour.

In hindsight we should have played Reeves against Gawn and played Meek this week. Probably cost us the game although I think Reeves competed well in the ruck. Suns great strength is there centre clearance work and I think Meek’s ground level work around stoppages is 1st rate whereas Reeves is non-existent.
Don't agree.

Hawks v Suns was always a 50/50 or less up in Darwin, whereas the Dees game was one we should have won, so you play your best team in the probable win and then rest players for the long shot.

Sam Mitchell summed it up well I think , we weren’t good enough for long enough . Good effort under tough conditions against good opposition. Watson could be anything when he can pull 4 quarters together, has a very high ceiling!

Onto next week back at the mighty MCG !

Despite losing the clearances by 15 we actually had one more scoring shot (11 to 10).

We just kicked 6.5 to their 8.2.

We also transitioned the ball more from the back half and d50 to inside our 50.

The problem was they scored from their transitions at a significantly higher rate than we did. Which is how it felt watching it. As soon as they got it inside 50 our defence looked much more likely to give up an easy score than theirs did.
