Review R10: The Good, Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

The exposed evidence is that we continually lose the same way, we continually see the same attitude at selection, we continually lose to the same teams (we've literally still only beaten the teams we beat last year), and we have a coach has been at the helm for 6 years for a 35% winning record.

I think we can make some assumptions, as the evidence is rather exposed.

In terms of matches, we lost the away Showdown last year, but not this year, so that's actually an improvement.

I haven't watched a Nicks presser in years. Can't stand listening to that man speak. It's just incredible to me that he's apparently got enough charisma to scam his way to 6 years as a senior coach. He doesn't come across like a bloke who could charm his way out of a speeding ticket.

The problem with Nicks philosophy is it leads to situations like this. He continually holds onto guys playing poorly because he has a set 22 he wants to roll with all year and then suddenly out of form players start piling up and if he had of been rotating throughout the year where required we wouldn't be in a situation where you can point to 4-5 guys and say "They're not currently up to it".

I agree with this. Rather that having a squad mentality, he rewards mediocrity way way too often over his tenure. The result, we have so many young unknown quantities on our list. Are they any good? We don't know because of our complete lack of ability to continually blood young players. Nick's also doesn't like to throw the magnets around (unlike McCrae who is a fine game day coach).

I'm not talking about discontent. I'm talking about mindset. He doesn't trust the players. He plays a conservative game. Every time we start kicking big scores he actively corrects it.

That's reflected in selection and game day tactics. And it contributes to the mindset of the players he coaches.

He said as much last year when he was asked about bringing on Curtin with 7minutes left at GMHBA.
Wouldn’t have given Curtin any confidence whatsoever in himself, by saying he didn’t want to bring him on with the game in the balance.

So Crouch this year averaged 65.7% ToG. Prior to Crouch being out Peatling averaged 82.1%, the last 3 weeks it's down to 70.6% (and at 65% today). Have we gone as simple as just swapping Crouch for Peatling in our planned rotations and not at all accommodating Peatling's ability to play other positions which Crouch can't do?

He is not their mate/buddy/friend.
He's their Coach.
They can all be great mates after he's done.

One thing I remember Walsh saying when he started was along the lines of "We can be friendly, but we're not friends. It's an employee/employer relationship". Like made it very clear where he stood and he was the boss.
