Mostly they were, I agree. Except in the 4th quarter when they awarded WHE a free kick in the goal square, when he tackled the Crow defender, who had ducked his head trying to get a free and made no effort to dispose of the ball. And of course Jordan ex-Dork in the commentary box objected to the decision and mocked co-commentator Gary Lyon who disagreed with him
Didn't he rage up Mitchell! Offered no reason other then Lyon was wrong.

I reckon if Lyon is agreeing with a Collingwood free kick, we definitely earnt it. How else can you explain the ball spilling free after he tried to duck a tackle and turn!

The first 2 goals of the 2nd quarter kicked by the Crows- both kicked by Fogarty - were very frustrating.

We had the ball in our D50, we are streaming forward into our F50 then a basic turnover. We can’t defend transition. Goal against.

Definitely an area of improvement.

This is why it fascinates me that some often call for Beau to be dropped. Is it because he doesn’t rack up the disposals? He doesn’t have to, with the way he plays and what he brings to the team. Maybe he’s one of those players where you have to see him play live to fully appreciate his contribution.
An example of why stats don't tell the full story.

Gutsy and determined win by the lads. 67k supporters in the house too is special.

I’m in awe of the back 6 and our defensive mechanism at the moment, it is impenetrable at times. Our pressure rating watching the game all day was through the roof as well. Defence is a winning formula to winning flags.

It’s amazing to think that we have now played 9 of the top 12 teams on the ladder without fixtures against any of North, Richmond, WCE or Melbourne.

Special shoutout to Howe, Jaicos, Long, Maynard, Billy and DC, thought they were incredible.

My only knock at the moment is our clearance game, 2 weeks in a row we’ve been smashed and this week against a weaker midfield. Would love to see Long handle more load (low TOG% again) and continue with the Beau experiment of 5/6 CBA’s a game. The big bodies really help us.

What a team.

Better players out there today, but how bloody good is Perryman.

We’ve been crying out for a guy who does everything super well and hardly makes mistakes. Will never have the highlights package but you can be guaranteed he will nearly be the first vision Fly shows the boys on a Monday for the work rate, intent and high IQ plays. Love his work.

Having said that, he’s damned good when he collects uncontested possessions. So I reckon he’ll he an even better player if he can win more easy ball. Of course winning the easy hall isn’t that easy as you need to be in the right place at the right time!

Clearances are less of an issue when we win CP - which we’ve done in the last 2 weeks. It’s all about pressure, and when you hit 258 as we did at one stage yesterday we’re very hard to beat.

Yeah, agree.

At the end of the season the AFL needs a meeting and to sort through some of these rules and the interpretations.

Often it's just the luck of the bounce between it being paid and not paid. There was one bit of play where I thought we did really well and we were penalised for insufficient intent (name escapes me) the player went by foot but was under pressure and in the build up had been great. it was near the MCC.
I think they really need to crack down on holding the man
Players really need to have clear possession before hands are laid on them
So many times players are grabbed or pulled off the ball without possession

I would like to see him spend more time on a wing
Apply his pressure full length of the ground and use pace to get back and deliver into the forward line

Felt some empathy for Naicos as there are 2 sets of rules. What opponents do to him and what he can't do to opponents.
This
The amount of stuff you see when at the game compared to watching the TV is unbelievable.
Nick was constantly harassed yesterday, it's amazing he actually manages to get a clearance at all.
The grabbing, pushing, blocking, double-teaming, extra aggression in tackles. I know a lot of onballers get this but how the umpires can't see this is flipping mind-boggling. He gets criticised for having a whinge about his treatment but it's relentless, every second of the game. This is where someone like Mitchell can be valuable in that he can wear the constant niggling and take some of the pressure off Nick. We need almost a midfield enforcer to give a fair bit back to the taggers

How good are we

what’s evident live which doesn’t translate on tv is his pace combined with his thirst to tackle makes the opposition nervous

This win now makes top 2 highly likely.
We are yet to play the bottom 4, 5 times from here, plus Freo at home. (6 wins)
It can easily take our season wins up to 14-2. Then it only takes 2 or 3 wins out of the other 7 games to claim a home QF.

That was a really impressive win in very ordinary conditions. There are times when you just have to scrap your way to victory and this was one of them. The Crows are an impressive side and should be pushing top 4 by seasons end, so to kick 4 goals clear midway through the last was another sign of the improvement in our lads this season. A couple of unreal kicks from Dawson in the latter stages of the game and more than questionably umpiring decisions made the game look closer than it really should have been. The umpires are feeling the heat but their performances aren't helping them. Missing clear free kicks when in full view but then happy to overrule from 50-60m away with 50/50 calls. Mind you this went both ways yesterday and it's happening far too often.

Back to our boys. Our backs were immense yesterday. The stand in skipper was huge down back. I'm sorry but with the culture Fly has built, we simply don't let Bruz head to North. Huge support from Jaicos, Howey and Big Billy Frammers. All the talk was how many goals the Crows talls were going to kick and Frampton gave Thilthorpe a genuine bath 1 v 1. They don't get the plaudits, but Perryman and IQ just keep getting the job done across half back. Week after week they lock away the opposition small/medium defenders. I also thought Houston was better yesterday. He's going to be a huge asset as he continues to adapt to our defensive system, and we start to utilise his elite kicking.

Sidey, Pendles, Naicos, Longy were all great and just scrapped away in the wet all day. DC probably got beaten for the first time in a while. Coxy needs to lift because when McStay returns you struggle to see where he fits in the side. Our wingers in Ed and Crispy played crucial roles yesterday. Ed is starting to look more at home at AFL level and it would be great to see him get a block of games under his belt.

Up forward i thought Checkers battled away brilliantly all day. The amount of times he flies for a mark against 3 opponents is crazy. Rarely gets beaten in the air and just works his butt off. 10 goal kickers suggest that all the forwards stood up when required in a day when it was hard for anyone to really dominate. Beau is starting to hit top form and along with Bobby, Billy and Shoota when he returns, it's as good a small forward mix as any side in the comp. Membrey is playing that crucial 3rd tall role and alongside WHE was important in providing support to Checkers.

Overall, it's clear that this side is a better version than 2023. That all counts for nothing right now though. A big 3 weeks coming up that could see us really cement a top 2 spot or fall back into the pack of team pushing for the top 4.

Excellent win in tough conditions and up against a side that matches up well.

Both sides took a more conservative approach to ball movement I thought, clearly worried about the others ability to score if the game opened up.

Probably due to the rain as well. You didn't want to over do it and give up easy out the back goals.

The biggest shift was the fact we put away the handball game at half time. Something like 90 in the first half and 50 in the 2nd. Adapted well to the conditions and took control of the game.

Dunno if it was just me, but it seemed like the Crows players took every single opportunity to duck their heads looking for high frees. It was almost comical. Peatling did it at one stage and was lying on the ground laughing about it.

Anyway, happy to get out of that with a win. Was always going to be a tough one.

Yep, they must have received 5-6 frees from this tactic. If it was Collingwood, the outrage would be enormous. Whilst to the letter of the law, it's a free, if you duck your head then it's play on. Hi Jack Ginnivan.
