Interesting how the on-ball roles were shared rather equally between five midfielders yesterday.

Powell, Jy and Sheeze got more on-ball time at the expense of LDU, Wardlaw and Parker.

Particularly curious as LDU achieved his third highest number of clearances for the year with little more than 2/3s of the midfield time he's had in recent games.
Five player rotation, with Sheezel getting for a few. It’s why Phillips doesn’t play.

Also interesting are the ruck numbers. I initially saw Darlings numbers declining and thought the club was just looking to protect his aging body then realized it was because Xerri has basically refused to leave the ground for the last month

After a decent month it’s good for the boys to get a win.
Exactly. So much negativity in this thread.

It was ugly nourishment.

Combine this weeks first quarter with last weeks 2nd, 3rd & last quarters & we’re looking okay.

Today was a mini grand final for this Richmond team, on their home deck & they brought the heat.

In the past month of footy we are only -9 on the scoreboard.

We’re tracking a lot better than this time last year. Slowly coming together.

I won’t be watching the replay of that one, but the players will & they’ll continue to work on the things they need to work on.

We’re only two & a half games out of the eight! (Tongue firmly in cheek here)

He's a indomitable endurance beast and I love him.

F*** i love big X! Shinboner personified.

A tackling average of +90 brought on any game day will fold almost every team in the comp regardless of how well they play.

The game is won and lost by pressure and perceived pressure. North has historically played with extreme self-imposed perceived pressure, you could practically see it coming up a little with the last 4 minutes of the game where it looked like we could’ve blown that game too.

But the contest remained pressured on Richmond too, and it gave North enough reprieve to realise “oh shit we can win games of footy even if we don’t score”.

8) North's stars and leaders set the standard

After a strong month of footy in which North Melbourne lost games by nine points and three points, drawn with reigning premier Brisbane and finally broke through for a four-point win over Richmond on Sunday, the gap between its top end players and fringe players couldn't have been more pronounced. Where high draft selections and on-field leaders worked hard to play daring, attacking football, chains of possession broke down all too often due to one weak link. On Sunday, what resulted was a pressure-heavy, tense game as both sides were exposed in their ball movement, inviting opportunities for turnover or repeat stoppage rather than producing a free-flowing style of footy. Developing a list takes time, but the next huge leap in the Roos' improvement will only come once the list is deep enough to provide a springboard. - Gemma Bastiani

Except the “weak links” weren’t always who you’d expect.

Rewatched the game last night - I thought our first half of the last qtr was nearly as good as our 1st quarter, we just didn’t take chances. George missed a very gettable snap, Jy and Jack missed set shots.

We could have been 3-4 goals up and the game would have been shot but that just ain’t the NM way.

Other points from the rewatch
  • Corr actually started brilliantly, took a hanger and used it beautifully. Unfortunately lost his way in the 3rd and cost us dearly.
  • Caleb was much better. Great goal assist to Cam and a great kick to LDU with 4 minutes to go the highlights.
  • Pink’s Cole forward defense in last qtr was match winning
  • Sheez was very fumbly, still made a contribution but wasn’t clean.

Rest has been said - looking forward to hopefully getting Curtis back and maybe seeing Ford trialled down back.

100% true. There's also another timeline where Richmond converted one of those misses and we're all here talking about the end of North and the world of competitive quilting. It's more interesting than you think!

Two things. Pink didn’t have to body Lynch out of the way because Lynch was too busy throwing himself into the air to get a free kick. And the “controversial” non OTB call in the last quarter wasn’t any more controversial than the ridiculous one that was called against LDU earlier the game when he was clearly passing the ball to a teammate running ahead of him and it bounced the wrong way.

I'm convinced that we start each week two or three goals down against any club that the AFL would like to see in the top 8. Unfortunately that's most of the league - all big clubs plus Qld and NSW. The stats that we need but will never get are:-

i) goals resulting from frees and 50's;
ii) same again but weighted by margin and time remaining
iii) same again but listed by umpire and team awarded
iv) frees awarded when result is known (by team by umpire) - this one captures trash time frees that are often used to square the ledger.

Sure this requires a tin foil hat but there was a 62 FK differential vs Gold Coast in round 5(!!) and I have no doubt we remain distant last on the ladder. The next one should be published soon.

What about that deliberate on the wing?

It bounced over purely because the ball is oval

It could have landed and gone any direction

Deliberate
I couldn't believe it this morning when I read in the paper that Yze and the media felt we were lucky that LDU wasn't pinned for deliberate late in the last quarter. FFS, that would have been a criminal decision had that been called.

Was ugly, but we need to learn how to win ugly. Bigger picture (posted in Clarkson thread)…

Round 10 percentage:
2024: 56.8
2023: 66.6
2022: 53.6
2021: 56.3

Currently: 80.2

Finally there is something tangible we can point to and say, we are improving.
This is all we can hang our hat on after 5 years of rebuilding?

Can’t wait for the next 10 years stuck in the vortex.

I really like what Hardeman brings. It’s clear he’s a tough competitor with some dash, but let’s not label him a beautiful kick.

He had about three of his kicks smothered/kicked into the man on the mark vs Brisbane and a horror turnover that cost us a goal yesterday when he missed a target 15 metres away.

Lots to work with no doubt but stop hyping. It’s a very North Melbourne thing to do.

Seems like there are two distinct camps in this thread: Those that think we were utter dogshit and those who appreciate a rare win at the MCG against a team that has already taken a couple of decent scalps and play that ground well.

I'll say this - when they whittled away our margin in the second quarter and had all the momentum with their pressure off the charts, I was sure we would lose this. Yet somehow we hung in there, and against the tide were able to get our noses in front. If the bloody ball bounced our way a few times, we looked like getting a 3-4 goal lead early in the last that should have ensured a more comfortable win. Of course that didn't happen, but we still managed to win. FFS, enjoy it people!
