It was easy to misinterpret your original post.

English averages those numbers because the Dogs are a really high scoring team.

Score Involvements as a % of Teams Score Involvements:

Gawn - 35%
Marshall - 29.4%
Jackson - 28.8%
Xerri - 26.2%
English - 25.9%
De Kooning - 24.8%

Paints a slightly different picture, so, no, he’s not WAY ahead. It simply means English plays in a higher scoring team than Xerri.

Again I am not commenting on the relative merits.
I was just highlighting what was originally posted.

I don't dispute your point either, but English has a raw number of score involvements that is well ahead of Xerri (71-54).

FWIW I don't consider English to be in AA discussion at all.

Max has had 1 season in his 7 x All-Australian seasons where he took home the AFLCA award (2018).

Xerri is the current league leader. Gawns the only ruckman to win the award since 2003. Goodes won it as a midfielder.

So I think it's fair to say he deserves a little bit more respect than "been great" as a passing comment if he continues at this rate...

As far as I can tell, no AFLCA winner has ever missed the AA side.

I'd say, the top 3 each year probably never have either without looking.

Xerri is a tackling and clearance king. But I don't want crap clearances from a ruckman.

Gawn averages 20% more disposals, Gawn has more score involvements, in fact Gawn leads the league in percentage score involvements from disposals, they're about the same in hitouts and Gawn has taken 56 marks to Xerri's 18.

Gawn has taken 22 contested marks to Xerri's 4.

Gawn leads the league in ruck hardball gets (Xerri 2nd) and he also leads the league in score launches (Xerri 3rd).

Gawn has 41 intercepts to Xerri's 21.

Xerri leads the league in hitouts to advantage 11.9 and Gawn is 5th 10.1.

Gawn is no slouch in crap clearances also, he averages over 6 to Xerri's nearly 7.9.

I suppose it's what you prefer. They're similar in their hitout stats but Gawn gets more of it and marks it a hell of a lot more.

But if you like tackles and ruckman throwing it on their boot Xerri is your man.

If Xerri dominates Gawn again in a few weeks I'll concede. If it's a nil all contest, or Gawn wins it's game on.

Looking only at clearance numbers alone is just as meaningless as raw hit out numbers. The Dogs just completely obliterated Essendon, but lost the hitouts and centre clearances... Meanwhile Richards, Libba and English all featured in the votes.

Brayshaw and Serong I'd have in the squad at this point. Bolton wouldn't even be in the conversation right now. If you're putting mid/forwards in the side, Matt Kennedy or Isaac Heeney would be far more likely to feature in the side/squad as a half forward than Bolton

Using this for reference, the small forward spot will be interesting this year. Been little hype around him so far, but Rhylee West is sitting at 26 in this metric (18 goals, 8 GA). Would be 3rd among small forwards. If you look at Score Involvements, right now it's Greene on 73, West on 72 then Elliot on 70.

The Dogs remaining as the top offensive team this year despite losing Weightman and JUH for the year, and Darcy for most of it, is largely due to guys like West and Sanders helping create so many scoring opportunities. Provided the Dogs don't capitulate by year end like they've had a tendency to do in recent years, I think this will help West's case for selection

The post was in relation to one stat only and on raw numbers Xerri is well behind.

Your post did not have relevance to that particular stat.

Another North poster subsequently gave an explanation by comparing the same stat as a percentage for the team.
That was relevant to the earlier point.

I am actually on your side with Xerri.
Would have him as AA ruckman and only Gawn is an alternative.
