In a hypothetical world in which you got to sit down with Josh Carr and talk gameplan's, what would you advocate strongly for. We have seen Hinkley move through various phases during his tenure, having varying degrees of success with different styles , but ultimately they have all failed under the ultimate test of finals pressures. There was the free wheeling, play on at all cost, attacking style of his early years , which was built on high fitness levels , there was the Bassett years with the press , which became higher each year and now a return to the aggressive attack style , with lots of run and forward handball etc, copying the hawks (HOKBall) , GWS (tsunami) or GC ( the Hardwick tigers model).

Is there a style, a gameplan, a brand that you want to be known for under Carr , is there a gameplan that works sustainably throughout the minor round and also works under finals. This is to my thinking is the most important key step in any rebuild.

I just want to see a forward structure that values creating high percentage scoring opportunities. It's been a bit better this year in terms of style, but the decade+ of high volume I50s with no plan of what to do once it gets in there, no space, no leading, no idea was very frustrating. I want to see forwards who move to create space for each other.

Anything that empowers our players over micro-managing them.

Start by going back to basics. If you're a forward you're in the side to kick goals, not to bring the ball to ground. If you're an outside midfielder your role is to get the ball in the hands of our forwards, not to kick to the pocket or long to a contest to get a stoppage. If you're an inside midfielder your role is to win the ball, etc etc etc

So you believe that the style that they are moving to is in the right direction, but the issue is the forward connection, cohesion and structure.

I don't think our current gameplan is the worst but it needs some tinkering and most of all, it hinges entirely on effort and pressure. (Not unlike any gameplan)

And the team is currently incapable of bringing effort and pressure, on a game by game basis at the moment

I might be old school but I believe all gameplans, should be underpinned by sound defensive structures first and then you build to an attack phase. We are far to easy to score against , when the pressure drops even slightly and don't have the collective brilliance to play this high tempo high skill attacking game style. Is there a happy medium employing elements of a Geelong type rolling layered defense.

The main thing is forward entries and a close second is skills/decision making.

I'd only just tweak the game plan to suit our players and then focus on forward entries and skills.

I'd also demand that every single player who plays must have their socks pulled up. Socks up is the uniform and must be shown respect. Socks up also helps identify teamates when on the bottom of a pack.

And the last thing is I'd probably ask if he only wants to coach for one year as I don't see him improving out club or culture. But we are stuck with him now.

I am with you, I want to see a forward structure where players lead into space mark the ball and kick straight a la Jay Schulz. Of course to do that you have to have a mid field that doesn't stuff around and moves the ball forward more efficiently. We stuff around too much and give the opposition too much time to move back and cover our forwards.

It's super frustrating to see us break the lines and stream inside 50 uncontested into a very open 50 only to kick the ball just sort of nowhere to no-one's advantage.

Other clubs, even the very worst ones, will find a target in that scenario, but we've been drilled to close our eyes and kick high and long.

Game plans evolve during a season as the opposition closes off Plan A. And where we are compared to where we should be has more to do with blue collar grit and determination and a below par fitness level than any game plan. But here are the suggestions Josh should take on board:

1. Play to your strengths- we have mobile forwards and an exceptional midfield. Get the forwards to get on their bikes and create space and the midfield to lower their eyes;

2. We now have good crumbing forwards and no Dixon- when we are in attacking mode, kick to the hotspot not the pocket- watching players kick to the pocket in the dying minutes of the Showdown when we were chasing the game, was soul destroying;

3. Lukosius could be our Dawson- give him licence to roam and be a marking presence all over the ground. If not him then Bergman could do it- you break lines one of three ways- 1. excellent kicking, 2. powerful running and link up play, 3. Marking around the ground- use all 3;

4. Sack the fitness staff;

5. Change the attitude- get back to “hard at the body, hard at the ball”- toughen them up physically and mentally.

It’s all pretty simple when it’s broken down.

1- An open forward line that allows the talls to lead up to the ball. Then that leaves space for crumbers front and centre.

2- Actually use the wing position and create space to run up and down the ground (watch Dempsey on the weekend). We never create space on. The wing as we push so far up the ground and move the ball so slowly that all that space gets filled.

3- Stop trying to run the ball by hand when we haven’t even looked up and assessed what’s in front. Lose count every week how often in particular Wines, Rozee, Farrell and Jones have the ball from a set play (mark/free) and instantly handball to a player 2m away and run instantly into trouble. We need to use the angles, switch the play and go around the zone before chipping inboard.

4- Which aligns with then targeting the corridor inside 50. Sick of us kicking to the boundary and if we’re lucky enough to pluck a mark, it’s usually on a crap angle.

In a very simplistic way, empty out the forward line and create space to have 4 genuine 1v1 opportunities. 2 half forwards, likely Richards and DBJ stay outside 50 to deliver it in. Berry in rotation for the 2 HFs. Rioli, SPP, Georgiades, Luko inside 50. Marshall in rotation for the 2 talls. The 3 talls are excellent with their forward craft to use space and lead into. Rioli and SPP are very crafty in 1v1 as well and their body work. Kick the ball flatter rather than high and long. Opposition are unlikely to put more than one spare down back and we have some long kicks in the side to take advantage of the outnumber.

The 2 HFs outside 50 also help defensively so it's harder for opposition to rebound. Allows us to hold back our midfield from pressing really high so gives our defence better protection and structure.

Under Ken, we love forcing a stoppage. I'd stop that and try putting forward momentum on the ball instead.

Have speedy wingers rather than the Mead/Boak types. Those that can take the territory and run 2 ways. This is why I really like Moraes and want to see him play as many games as possible. Burgoyne's best role imo is as a HB instead of wing.

A game plan built around running and carrying the footy, bounces and shepards. Not this handball into trouble over and over again. I want a forward six that move in sync and present to the ball carrier in waves and double back to crumb. I want a midfield who build their reputation on defending and making it hard work for the opposition, make it a dog fight and work hard both ways. A half Back line, as above, who run and gun, put pressure on the oppositions forward to defend them streaming forward with the ball under the arm. I want defenders who mark the footy and want the footy in their hands, easiest way to defend is to be in possession!

If he needs me to tell him what the game plan should look like, he's the wrong man for the job. He must already have a way he wants to play and if it makes us a competitive every week, winning team then I will be happy.

If pressed, I will say the way Collingwood play impresses me most. When they have the ball they manage to run in numbers and create scoring from a forward line that is - let's be honest - pedestrian.

But their defensive game is what impresses me most. They have an ability to get numbers to a contest and pressure the opposition to lose the ball in dangerous parts of the ground. It is really an impressive package.

A game plan that doesn't need to run at 110% to be effective. We should, provided the list is strong, be able to play at 90% and still get a comfortable win over teams with weaker lists on the day. We should be able to play to our ceiling, not needing players to have career best games, to beat teams with equally strong lists. That involves maximising efficiency. We take marks, we hit targets, we don't leave the defence wide open, we don't put the footy in to low % areas constantly, and we don't have a default that requires the list to run marathons as well as be contested machines. We accept some players are better than others and tailor their roles accordingly. We do not insist on playing Jed McEntee in the Robbie Gray role.

Whether this is offensively or defensively balanced I am not too fussed with at the moment.

i have a game plan that would win 6 flags in a row . Id leave most of the game plan and players the same except i would make a emphasis on players with elite long kicking. Then i would go out and get 2 of biggest 7 foot 300kg maori type 18 year olds i can find and teach them to mark and kick. Then plonk the 2 big boys in the goal square and tell them not go more 20 metres from there. Everyone else kick long to the square and bang we win.
