I hadn't planned on doing this week's preview - but seems we're a bit stuck for authors, hence why the hell not.

Fair warning though. This is a 10 minute rush job (after a game of divvy 5 floorball) & not the normal DQ deep dive into the forthcoming proceedings.

The Details

Venue: the MCG (the scene of so many painful memories in recent times)
Time: 3.20pm AEST, Sunday
Weather: Its Melbourne so I'm not hazarding a guess

Game Analysis

Melbourne has found a bit of form lately. They've quietly won 4 of their last 5 & have gone from media whipping boys to "meh, GWS and Freo are much more fun to pillory".

Their victory over a disappointing Lions last week was built off the back of intensity and Max Gawn going beast mode.

The shift of Clayton Oliver into a tagging role has been particularly effective. Don't be surprised if he pesters the life out of Chad this week.

Of course, Big Cox will be awake to that plan and will thus deploy JJ to tag Oliver.

Simon Goodwin, that sly middle-aged fox, will respond in kind, by sending Kade Chandler to tag JJ.

And so the cycle will continue, until every player on the field is tagging and being tagged.

As a result, Joel Hamling, by minding his own business and never leaving the goal square will probably lead the disposal count, with a game-high 4. Maybe.

As for the Swans, unfortunately it still appears to be Heeney & Chad or bust. Which leads us to the team selection, the most interesting part of this week's equation.

The Teams

Will he or won't he?

Thats the big question. Does Mills return?

In my view, yes, he will - in some capacity. McInerney's latest clumsy excuse for a bump may force Cox's hand. Expect to see Mills either with a sub vest at the start or end of the game.

Hayden McLean, despite being largely unsighted in the VFL, seems likely to get a reprieve due to the Armatey Bumpy Party that got a bit out of hand. The AFL may be keen to get a Buller on the field to spike Demon's fans interest and drive up crowd numbers, but I don't think the Swans will play ball.

The final forced change will be for the luckless Aaron Francis. Taylor Adams may be called upon to patrol the forward line, or else Ben Paton may get another chance, if Joel Hamling is to remain our star full forward.

Personally, I felt so sorry for Paton two weeks ago. His look of sheer dejection as he sat on the bench after being subbed off broke my heart. Giving him another chance would be akin to Old Yeller making a miraculous recovery at the end of the movie. A truly uplifting story.

And of course, if Cox decides to axe Gus Sheldrick, riots will ensue on Driver Avenue.

As for Melbourne, they're basically at full strength. Jake Lever likely returns, as may Jack Viney. Their injury list is the stuff dreams are made of.

Lucky sods.

The Verdict

It feels like two middling sides playing off for relevancy in 2025 this week (note to Bonz, I am in no way suggesting either club is irrelevant).

A real toss-of-the-coin encounter that could easily go either way.

Ultimately, it might just come down to how often we kick it to Max Gawn.

I'm going to have faith & tip the Swans by 2 goals. Who said I'm a glass half empty kinda guy?

Cheer cheer.

Great job in 10 minutes

Top effort for a 10 minute rush job (after a game of divvy 5 floorball). :thumbsu:

Lever looks a likely in for them, which is a bit of a bugger as I'm sure their record with both May & Lever in the team is significantly better when it is only one or the other.

I hope Mills is right to go, but if any doubt leave him out.
Famous last words, but trust the fitness staff, yes, yes, I know.

Finally, until I googled, I'd never heard of 'floorball' and how the heck does Perth have 5 divisions for it, even allowing for WA's proud hockey history? :confusedv1:

Nice job, Dubai Quacker. Reckon you nailed the ins/outs.

I don't think we should rush Mills back, but we probably will. Hopefully just as sub. Really don't want him to start, because with how this season is tracking, we'll probably cop an injury in the first half and he'll have to stay on.

I see why some want Buller over McLean, but honestly I just don't think he'll make it at the level anyway so it's probably ultimately a waste of time. I don't really rate McLean either and would probably prefer we went in smaller because I'm not overly worried about Melbourne's key defenders, but I doubt we will.

May's looked completely and utterly cooked for most of this year. Lever has been okay, but his effectiveness is limited without the backing of a quality lockdown KPD. That being said, they will both have very favourable match-ups this weekend no matter who we select in the forward line.

The Dees tall forwards also suck just as bad as ours atm (if not worse), so could be a good week to give Liz some time up the ground this week though I'm certainly not expecting that to happen.

If that’s your rush job it lacks nothing!

With Melican , Amartey and Jmac suspended plus the injury list think we are going to struggle to match the Dees.
Mills if he gets through training this week will probably get named in the starting line up. Adams a big chance to come in as well. McLean will probably Bradbury his way back into the team. Possibly look at Hanily as sub. Hamling might get sat on May as the defensive forward and a fair chance to get the next Swans suspension when the pair of them kick off. Grundy and Ladhams need to give Gawn the run around more than likely lose the hit outs but stop him roaming around intercepting defensively or sneaking into the forward fifty.
If we try the let's bomb it in to our makeshift forwards time and time again and hope they take speccys then I will probably drink to excess and headbutt the t.v.
Do what we did against Carlton and try and go with them for three quarters and give ourselves a chance in the last quarter.

Out: Amartey Francis McInerney
In: Buller Adams Florent
Sub: Hanily

Hamling to defence. Adams and (continued) Gus in the guts. Heeney forward more. Maybe even Blakey forward at times.

Wicks on Pickett. Rampe on Melksham unless Fritsch starts kicking goals. Tmac and Hamling on whichever of Turner, McDonald, Petty are forward.

Floorball is (at least in my case) a team of middle aged people (of both genders) wielding plastic ice hockey sticks, furiously chasing a plastic ball & trying unsuccessfully to hit it into a goal. Then watching as your 15 year old opponent dispossesses you & whizzes off with said ball and nonchalantly deposits it in the opposite net.

But it is fun. And it’s massive here in WA. They even have a world championship that gets televised in some countries. The Scandanavians demolish everyone.

Anyway, I admire your faith in our fitness staff. You’re possibly the last of the true believers.

The Swans/ Bloods have always been relevant (at least in my heart, plus are the biggest football club in the city of Sydney).

Melbourne are relevant for Mount Buller tourism rates, which is incredibly important for a Victorian economy which is struggling currently.

Out: Amartey (idiocy), McInerney (idiocy), Francis (concussion)
In: McLean, Adams, Hanily
Hamling to defence replaces Francis and in turn replaced by McLean
Florent into the 22 replaces McInerney
Hanily replaces Amartey (kind of).
Adams sub.
Don't throw Buller to the wolves. Put the acid on McLean to perform. Go small up front but not with Adams/Sheldrick, not fast enough.
Mills must play a full game of VFL.
Not the greatest but IMO the best we can do.

My guess for the ins

*McLean - More experienced tall forward to partner Ladhams. Rather than giving Buller his 1st game in 18 months. I assume Hamling will go back to defence.
*Florent - In for Mcinerney. Winger for a winger.
*Adams - As part of a smaller forward line. Played 2 reserve games. I feel that after the disappointment of last year, they will want to give him every chance of breaking into the best 22.

* Sub Hanily/Mills - I am not sure if they would bring back both Mills/Adams into the starting 22 in the same week.

I get the concerns about throwing Buller into the deep end, but I'm not sure telling McLean to be better will help, given he had ample games where he was our no.1 KPF playing recently and expected to lead the line. This week is no different.

I don't expect the choice to make a lot of difference, but given McLean was dropped for form, then was outplayed (admittedly not by that much) by Buller, I'd like us to give him a go rather than a McLean reprieve (kind of the opposite of putting the acid on him).

Also think a forward line of Buller, Heeney, Ladhams, maybe Blakey at times would be more mobile and less predictable for the Dees to manage.

And with Heeney forward more, Adams could take up some of his time in midfield, without having to play Adams forward as much.

It will be a miracle if we win this. I know Melbourne have been very poor all season, but that was a terrific win at the Gabba last weekend and they should have their tails up and whilst ours was a good win, it's come at a huge cost.
I'd have given us a big chance if we hadn't lost the two to suspension.
Losing those two, coupled with the quality we still have on the sidelines, I just can't see how we get it done ☹️

Dees due for a let down after that stirring win. Also less recovery time.

Smother Fritsch and Dees won’t score over 50. We will win easily as our top 5 is better than theirs. Heens and Chad to dominate after Gus does the grunt work early.

Off to the Lid thread….
Fritsch is 4th for Dees goalkicking with 8 from 9 games. Pickett, Melksham (as the Lions discovered) can hurt you.

I know where you can put the lid.

Ladhams will kick 3 this week .

Sydney by 30.

We won our last game I remember at the MCG by 76 points when we flogged Hawthorn, so our form is good at the ground .

Just random unorganised thoughts:

- That trio of Campbell, Cleary & Warner Jr. are almost non-negotiables in the side for me now.

- I'd like to see the numbers for Heeney's accuracy when playing as a forward vs when he pushes forward as a mid.

- I feel like Jordon stands to be the biggest loser from a potential return of Mills to the midfield.

Reasons for optimism - your exact sentiments were echoed by plenty before pretty much all of our wins this season. We are going okay IMO.

That makes me wonder , if the team is fully fit who is in the Dean Cox best 22/23.

Odds of everyone be fit together are remote.

But I suspect Warner Jr is not in that, Cleary may not be either, not saying either is correct , I haven't done the exercise but I suspect I wouldn't fit Warner Jr in.

But I also don't mind what he did on the weekend , but I think clearly we are still reliant on two mids
