Strategy Changes: Round 11 Walyalup vs. Yartapuulti

I mean the fans, including myself, were lamenting Worner being picked. But with each game he’s stamping himself as a strong intercept player willing to take on the contest.
Now he’s cemented into the defence allowing Wagner to go midfield as well as Simpson coming in.
There’s merit in backing young guys to play every week and build form.
Ballsy to select Simpson off only 5-6 games for Peel playing half back.

We week in and week out are fielding the least experience (or the second least) team in the comp. It's almost like we had a mini-rebuild and then we lost a boat load of experience when Fife, Walters, and Mundy left/got hurt, we had to enter into another mini-rebuild/top up. When Walker got injured, I don't think many of us predicted what wagner/warner/simpson have brought to the table. My point is that in this mini-rebuild, we need to see what players like Raz and Simpson can do.

Then when Kozzie comes over in the next couple years and Young and Darcy are fit (and maybe a new coach), we'll have the age and experience profile to really compete. Everyone keeps waiting for Geelong and the Pies to suck, but they show experience matters. Brissy too. Melbourne and Sydney are the exceptions, but Swans have more key injuries than any other team and Melbourne are borderline dysfunctional. There are always exceptions, but overall the more experienced a team is the more likely it is to be at the top of the ladder.

I think Worner and Simpson give us the right (or at least a better) mix of speed and class in the back. Plus, Pav started as half back, so maybe the #29 just needs some time to develop at HB before becoming a HoF'er. 😉

I love Draper and think he's gonna be a key back for a long time and I wish he could get more games under his belt, but I liked what we had against the Jets, I mean, the Gliders, wait, no, I mean the Giraffes...nevermind, Let's just call them the "the Orange Team". How am I supposed to remember their name while typing this up? It's not like it's my job to know what their name is. 😜

Anyway, here are my changes for this week:

In: No one (NOD still needs some time at Peel and I think we give Darcy a second "preseason" until at least after the bye. I think Duff or COD were the ones to suggest this. I'm not that smart. 😆)

Out: No one

U R right.

But what is usually forgotten is that experience is not an independent variable.

Better players get to play more games = more experience.

Better conditioning staff = less injuries = more games = more experience.

Better coaching = better environment = better retention = more experienced players at your club.

Etc.

So experience is not just a matter of waiting. It depends on your drafting, off-field team and ultimately the coach.

Can't disagree. Being more experienced could be just a proxy for measuring overall talent, longevity, salary cap management that allows retention of players, and maybe even club culture to some degree. Regardless, overall, older teams perform better than younger teams. Our day is coming.

i see what you did there bill hader GIF

How far off is NOD?
He will likely be a test this week. He didn’t make it through the last WAFL game two weeks ago before pulling up sore. Watching the game he sort of faded out a little and looked a little hampered late - ended with 17 possessions and not many in the last quarter. As such I’d prefer him to play another game in WAFL.

Darcy also to play WAFL and split time between ruck and FF.

Out:
Banfield - No more please
Sharp - Not good enough for AFL
Sharp is fine. At the minimum he runs up and down all game and holds his width making the opposition winger/mid accountable.
As a team we are not going wide as often in trying to go faster in our ball movement, methinks we like the corridor and are attacking it.
Do we need to draft/obtain another winger? 100%

Experience made together, also compounds the raw individual numbers.
Teams as organisms have complex experience profiles.
A possible explanation for us punching above our "least experienced" ladder position is the relatively strong experience in the midfield and defence cohorts?
Group experience of the forward line is still being built.

Pies MUST win a flag with that experience!
Not because it guarantees success, but because they're about to tumble into the abyss.
The contrast between them and us says it all.
They are four years older with 4years more experience, their window is closing , ours is opening!
Can we prise ours open early?
Can they hold theirs open longer?
Yokai!

Just goes to show how much talent we have. This side is missing Young, Darcy, Noddy and Walker. If JLo can't get this lost deep into finals he needs to be moved on. A full and healthy list would trouble any team!

Who would have thought we wouldn’t even bother to list Fyfe & Walters when talking about outs.

I wonder if either or both have a last squeeze left in the bottle if we make September? Not many you would rather have in a final at even close to their best.

Even though the romantic in us all would love the thought of both of them going out in a blaze of glory in September, the chances of that happening are almost nil.

Even coming into this season fit and firing I thought their best was a long way behind them. Having now missed most of the season and expecting them to just perform like they did years ago is unrealistic.

Footy is a brutal sport and takes no prisoners, even champions.
