Scandal Troy Pannell fraud

You know they can track you, Troy?
Created this account specifically to defend umpiring, chief. You may have noticed that the profession is copping it from all angles - some of it justified but most of it a media-backed pile-on - and I'm over it. Happy to take you through the relevant decisions of that game (by my assessment, a best case 14-5 discrepancy that would still be viewed as biased), as it seems all Crows fans default to "right in front of me" mode if left unsupervised.

We are still laughably naive (or self-righteously patriotic) about the potential for corruption in Australian sport.

I remember as a teenager in the 90s (think it was 1994), the year Diesel Williams won the Brownlow, after effectively being robbed the year before (people may recall he gobbed off to Murray Bird in a 44 possession game and didn't poll a vote. Bird himself was once memorably described in an AFL book as 'Nice suntan, shocking umpire').

It was the embryonic days of sports betting (think Centrebet/Gerard Daffy) and I remember being told by a mate (whose family were in country Victoria) that an umpire who came from here had told them that Peter Matera was going to poll a shit load of votes. Matera had a serviceable but not spectacular year.

And lo and behold, Matera nearly pipped Diesel (28 votes to 30).

Come back to the present day, with a billion dollar industry, it boggles the mind.
You first instinct is not to believe it, but if you have a look on AFL tables you see that Matera had 8 3 vote games that season, and in 7 of them he had less than 20 disposals (6 18 or less. In 3 of them it was 15 or less) and only once kicked more than 2 goals. He got three in a game where he 15 and no goals!

I mean the thing about Roo is that he's not very bright. Give him a break.
Ditto Troy. Not inclined to give him a break though. Roo is pretty asset / $$$ wealthy. Most people would give up a fair bit of bright to be that legit financially solid.

Troy however, prob had some help to pull this off. This volume of cash should not pass financial audits over the time period. Something else may going on. One thing is certain, Troy is the fall guy.

I refuse to believe there is no vision, if so, this seems a bigger scandal than Pannell himself. It was 2016, footy was a billion $ sport, and there is an entire game with no footage. How could this be? What would have happened if there was a suspension or MRO? How did the coaches run through their tapes to review the game?
Whole game is here: https://www.afl.com.au/video/match-replays/2016

Excuse me Jack Pannell/Troy Merrigum I don’t like being called Chief. It’s extremely patronising. I prefer something respectful like ‘champ’.

I really want to know what free he gave to Adelaide....must've been pretty clear cut for him to have paid it one would think.
Think it might have been after this tackle.....

I remember looking at markets for that Brownlow count and was quite interested in the Mainwaring vs Matera market.

Prices were even but to me Chris had by far the better season. Didn’t place the bet but could not believe my serious lack of judgement when Matera almost won.

Never bothered to look back at Matera’s numbers but those quoted by you marry up with my feelings that year.

If there was any investigation into the one side free count by that umpire there is no way it should be conducted by the AFL. It would have to be external and independent but who could do that?
@hasumpstuffedup

WB’s two matches prior to the Adelaide match:

Rd 5 vs Brisbane
Umpires: Fisher, Brown, Pannell
Free kicks: 24-12 WB

Rd 6 vs North
Umpires: Donlon, Bannister, Pannell
Free kicks: 23-14 WB

Someone would have to trawl through the tape to get Pannell’s contribution to those discrepancies. But it is curious that he had three consecutive WB games, culminating in the infamous Adelaide game, and they all ended up with a decently weighted free kick tally in their favour.
Where is the bulldog umpiring thread! Man 2016 really was the year of the dog!

this. in recent times, there was the karl amon exotic (maybe 2021?) where he was short odds to be port's leading vote getter, it was very left field and miraculously, he topped ports list after a string of votes in a few games in the back end.

Rubbish. A huge business like that with a maintenance fraud system wouldn’t get close to being discovered by financial audits. You realise that financial auditors don’t actually turn up to containers to check new welding for $900 invoices?

Razor Ray has been spying on this forum for years. Now he has a media presence he feels the need to create an account to drum up more conversation for more media gigs.

Welcome Ray.

I agree, Roo making those comments is embarrassing.

Nevertheless, 17 frees to 1 paid by 1 Umpire is unusual to say the least.....

lol this forum.

Despite the guy being a legitimate fraud on the run, there's no possibility that his fraudulent actions and personality might have seeped into his umpiring performances.

No chance.

None.

Zilch.

Christ.

Pretty hard to hide this over time. If they're found to have lied later, instant dismissal, cya.

Also your username is making me want to vomit out of my eyeballs. flipping Jameer and that finals series.

Yeah I guess if they had ever been a member of a club, posted publicly about them on social media etc then it would be pretty easy to find out.

Hahah, I'm sorry I've made you re-live that trauma. I'd rather forget about that whole series entirely... Courtney Lee's missed layup in game 2 and the end of game 4 still haunts me to this day 😭
