The irony in it all is Ben Long was our leading goal kicker yesterday, a St Kilda cast off.
Irony upon irony is that the pick used to trade for Ben Long came out of the Will Brodie trade that everyone garbaged. Will was traded in 2021 with our end of first round priority pick for a future second round pick and dumped salary. In 2022, that pick from Freo became Ben Long in a trade.

Who won those trades?

Loser club with a loser coach. They deserve their suffering
Feeds down right from the tippy top with their president. I listened to his BnF rant last year. No one with a attitude like that should be given the responsibility of president. Absolute defeatist loser.

Freo fans love to bring up their winning trades

You would only endorse that type of game plan that Lyon uses if it was cutting edge, ground breaking and won them the majority of games It isn't going to do that and is only going to take them to the bottom four, not finals, with the kicker that they are shithouse to watch as a team

Freo fans a self-delusional about trades.

They lost massively on Harley Bennell, but won't admit it.

They will say they won the Brodie trade because they also Matthew Johnson, without even considering that Ben Long and dumping Brodie's salary has been so good for us.

We all know they gloat about getting Brayshaw for Weller, but all those top 5 guys that year were flight risks, as they found out with Cerra. So glad we didn't pick LDU!

I had a convo last week with my freo mate on why again they are the youngest team in the comp, they keep using that excuse.

They could almost field a team of current AFL players at other sides;

Acres Weller hogan hill logue tucker schultz meek Collins Henry Lobb Hamling Neale Cerra langdon

But but brayshaw!

Gave away a coleman medallist for chips while paying ben king for it

When St Kilda drafted Max King and we drafted Ben King didn’t the sickeningly precious and self entitled St Kilda club do a social media post almost immediately about Ben going to St Kilda.
Can someone refresh my memory please?

The post said "Ben if you ever want to come home .... 😜". Along with a pic of Ben and Max standing together

The best part about it is he moved the Suns to play half back which was his preferred position, now he is an AA level forward 😂
A lot of people rubbished Ben previously but I always rated him after watching him play a game for the Saints where he had something like 27 disposals at 96% efficiency, 17 marks and took a screamer. He’s a Long. That means he can play. His footy IQ is also very underrated although I think he’s now become more appreciated.

That's exactly what's he's doing he's a used car salesman
The genius of Ross Lyon is that when the entire media should be speculating whether he'll be the first coach to be sacked in 2025, they are instead waffling about this throwaway comment that they manufactured. He put the excuse out there before the game and then it overshadowed his side's poor performance under his horrible game plan.

St Kilda has had heaps of opportunities to stack their list with talent, yet continually **** it up.
Paddy McCartin picked before Christian Petracca?
Jack Billings before Marcus Bontempelli and Patrick Cripps?
Trading for a busted Nathan Freeman?
Traded pick #5 for Jake Carlisle, could have got Harry McKay or Charlie Curnow.
Traded pick #10 in 2016, could have had Jarrod Berry.
Picked Hunter Clark & Nick Coffield in 2017, could have picked Aaron Naughton and there were 12 players after that who have won flags in the 7 years since.
At this intermission, the Saints asked for priority picks and were told they should use their earned picks better.
Picked Max instead of Ben.
Traded pick that Melbourne used for Tom Sparrow.
Traded pick #6 plus Blake Acres for Paddy Ryder, Dougal Howard & Brad Hill
Then something magical happened. St Kilda stopped pissing around with their early draft picks and actually brought some talent into the building.

I was looking through their draft history over past 10 years and wondered where the hell their higher picks went given they haven't had success for some time.

Other than Wilkie they basically got no one that performed up to their expectations for 4 years from 2017 - 2020
I still think Max King gets unfairly maligned.

Their more recent drafts look more promising.

Ross came back and they went back to the draft. What he is really lamenting is his own club being garbage at recruitment.

"St Kilda's biggest problem has been St Kilda"

Correct. Just like we've made plenty of mistakes as well but we're now seeing the results of a lot of hard work starting to bear fruit...

From 2016-21 this is what they did in the Draft.......1e: the Draft that favours the Nthn Clubs as per RTB...
They took McCartin but could have taken Petracca or Brayshaw (Freo) who went 2 and 3.
They took Gresham but left Dunkley there.
They took Clark/Coffield but could have taken Bailey and Ed Richards
And of course they took Max instead of Ben
And finally they took Allison instead of Gulden or O'Driscoll...

They seem to be on the right track now with Wanganeen-Milera, Phillipou, Wilson and hopefully Travaglia and Tauru progressing

St Kilda's problem has been development more than anything.

They've had a stack of super promising players, and few if any ever seem to kick on. On their current list of good players who actually developed under St Kilda, they have; Jack Sinclair, Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera and Rowan Marshall.

Their other high level players, Jack Steele, Jack Macrae, Callum Wilkie, Brad Hill were all traded in to the club.

One of the best examples of this is Jack Billings. He is so maligned by the club and the wider AFL community for being the person they took before Marcus Bontempelli but if you actually look over his career, he was pretty exceptional his first 4 years in the system and then just got worse and worse.

Were it not for some goalkicking yips, in his 3rd year he averaged 23 disposals, kicked 23.36 and had 22 goal assists as a HFF.

Thats pretty elite.

you fast forward another 4 years and he's then averaging 18 touches, kicked 11.6 for the season and only 6 goal assists.

Just completely got run into the ground. It's no different to any of the other elite talent they've had come through the door the last few years; Paddy McCartin, Hugh Goddard, Daniel McKenzie, Hunter Clarke, Nick Coffield, Jade Gresham, Ben Long, Max King, Matthew Macleod-Ellison, James Van Es, Ollie Hotton, Mattaes Phillipou, Darcy Wilson and Lance Collard all either didn't kick on, or started extremely well and then trailed off into obscurity.

Cant be adding the last 3 to that list. They are still very young and working on it. Pou will be a very good player so will Wilson
