Hand Doedee a club debut against his old team. He is five games back from an ACL, showing he’s ready to play at AFL level and our defence could benefit from his knowledge of the Adelaide players on game day (as well as in the lead up which will happen). We didn’t sign him to play twos.

I think Connor should be considered too. His creativity is a nice point of difference when our marking game is being stifled.

In: Doedee, McKenna
Out: Dev, L Ashcroft (rested)

The champion data guy On youtube is calling people who support 2 rucks 'flat earthers' basically saying 2nd ruck attends 1 centre bounce per quarter, so overated role.

Big worry against the crows though as Tilthorpe rucks better than their main guy, have never seen a big guy better at handling the sherrin below his knees!
I think the champion data guy on YouTube is a banana.

My worst case scenario rucking someone like Hipwood is that he cops a knee injury pinch hitting in the ruck, while a perfectly good and bona fide ruck option is out of the side.

I sort of agree with their 2nd ruck assessment.
However, each side is different. Having that reasonably good forward player as ruck relief is the ideal mix.
That player/players role still occupies 10-20% ruck game time. You can easily lose a game in that timeframe.
If you don't and your squad has great midfield depth having that extra midfielder over a 2nd ruck is also a good mix.
Then you can just throw anyone in for that period of time

They are sort of correct in that CBAs for the 2nd ruck are usually low. Hippys last 3 games were 4 (last game), 5 & 6.
However, to me the 2nd ruck still has to do around the ground positioning and at least nullify any kick down the line.
This is where actually playing that position for years helps. You waste energy trying to get to contests (until you learn a more efficient way) then have to go back to his KPP forward role and it can be draining and affect your forward game.
Players like Hippy won't get this right until they have a few years playing this role under their belt.
It took Joe years to be effective, but we always had 2 other seasoned KPF when he moved to the ruck role.

I think Fagan will persist with Hippy even though i would use Dunkley or Gardiner.

I think you have mis-read what champion data is saying.
He/she would put anyone in as a 2nd ruck because they feel anyone can fill in for 4 CBAs a game
So, on their line of thinking they would play anyone. Like the Tigers did at times in their premiership years.

Your Hippy concerns are not warranted in this case, even though Fagan is doing just that anyhow.
There is nothing in the rules that say you actually have to jump for the ball at CBAs

Say Dunkley is the ruck for 5 CBAs. He just stays down and either tackles the ruck or just rove the hit out.
Our other mids just rove to a losing ruck for this period of time.
In this case you have Dunkley playing ruck but a genuine midfielder around the ground until the main ruck returns.

So, you have Dunkley, Neale, McCluggage and one of Rayner/Will/Bailey at those 5/6 CBAs.
You lose some marking/spoiling around the ground that a tall can do but you gain a midfielder in Rayner/Will/Bailey
You also don't exhaust Hippy running around in that F/R role.

Every club would be different in regard to champion data thoughts. Ours is Hippy at the moment and Gardiner/Day.
Most coaches do not agree (yet) with that champion data assessment, or they would be doing something different now.

Crows have 3 genuine key forward talls so we need some flexibility in the defenders mix and match space. Either Gardiner goes back or Doedee comes in and plays back so Lester can play on one of the smalls. We may have to push Wilmot further up the ground to wing (I'd keep Answerth back for Rachele or Rankine) and Levi sub or rested.

Zorko Payne Lester
Doedee/Gardiner Andrews Answerth
Fletcher McCluggage Bailey
Cameron Hipwood Lohmann
Rayner Morris Ah Chee

Big O, Neale, Dunkley

Bench : Berry, WAshcroft, Ah Chee, Wilmot
Sub: Levi/Deven

Interesting forecast atm. A fair bit to play out I know, but currently forecasting up to 10mm of rain on Friday with up to 15mm on Saturday, which to me says the 10mm of rain on Friday will be later in the day / evening.

Not great weather for 3 talls.

This far out though you can throw darts at a dartboard in terms of predicting the weather.

Crows doing a number on the Swans atm, if this continues & they get the win it will be Second vs Third next week for the clash (unless Geelong win by 200).

I'm happier with that tbh. I like it when circumstances sharpen our focus on the task at hand.

The Crows goalkicking smalls might be as hard a match up as their talls. The majority of their goals are coming from the smalls so far.

Need talls in wet weather

Swans doing us a solid at the moment and making sure the Crows are complacent and self-satisfied before next week's game. Thanks guys 👍
…or they’re making sure the Crows are flying and will be pumped heading into a game against the reigning premiers. I can’t see them being complacent against us.

The only downside to the removal of wanton violence from the game is the crabs knowing they can scrag without any physical retribution.

It has got to the point when I get angry when we don't blatantly hold. Like the Dees game at the Sydney showgrounds in 2021, we had like 2 frees against from holds and we stopped doing it and petracca ran riot.

You are literally incentivised to cheat and scrag yourself and penalised if you don't. Would be nice if there was ever an umpiring emphasis on this but nooo, we've got to whinge about subjective holding the ball decisions through all 20 weekly panel shows.

Think we might get rolled this week. Don’t match up well with the Crows, they’re in form, we’re not, they’ve gone to another level this season. Best we can hope for is Nicksy mucks something up strategically. But with Murray Davis in the box he will know all of our moves.

Yeah I’ve got a grim feeling about it. We don’t play well against them even when we are in peak form.

At least rankine can’t concuss starce I suppose.

if ever we need a good 2nd ruck it is this week, Tilthorpe is scary good!

Nah we bring Fort in it'll look too slow. I'd rather play Doedee and shore up our tall defense, take my chances with Big O rucking midfield and defense, leave forward line to Hipwood and bunch of rest.

I think we need to tag Rankine with Motty/Answerth. Small fast mids have torched us all year

Answerth goes to Rankine I think. Also, looks like they've been using their second string for clearances - Berry 8, Peatling 7 and O'Brien 6 in yesterday's game. Dawson and Soligo must've stayed outside influencing the game leaving the inside heavy lifting to above players. Goes without saying but our mids really need to come dialed in for the entire game. Their forward line has too much variety and we'll struggle if we don't attack them at the center bounces and stoppage.

I just realized they also play Curtin deep giving them another height advantage in F50. This may be the game where we really need Doedee if he's ready to go.
