Autopsy Round 12, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Geelong

Second quarter arguably the best football we have played this year, a shame he Cats pulled away in the end the scoreboard not reflecting the contest for the best part of the game.

Harley and Hewitt worked well in the midfield along with Kelly almost back to his best. Hough quelled Smiths influence after HT and Ginbey was simply outstanding on Cameron and reminiscent of early 90s Jakovich at times.

Junk time cats goals aside which is the next area we need to focus and improve on, tonight was a prime example of how far our side has come since 2024.

Overall it's a positive, and it's a luxury to think this way, but gee what a missed opportunity.

Nail the Long goal and the crowd could have lifted us to victory. Needed to do more to curb the influence of Holmes and Miers, felt like nobody went near either of them all night and their effectiveness is hardly a secret.

I thought the midfield really failed Ginbey in the last. Kid was superb and then the hole in front of Cameron was left open by too many players focused on one-way running in the last. I guess as Mini suggested in his presser that'll happen when you're going for the win, but I thought it demonstrated a (still) present mindset of I'll go when it suits me.

Harry was also excellent down back.

I'm a staunch Maric (amazing) defender but I can see both himself and Hutch having a spell. Allan full game and McCarthy good options there.

Hewett and Harley are going to be fun to watch together for (hopefully) many years. Thought Reid played an excellent game under close attention.

Protected area 50s are an embarrassment to the game and need to be relaxed.

I don't trust Flynn. Need to figure out our ruck situation going forward, and fast.

Think it's a good idea. He gets to practice chewing off sick ones with no repercussion in the twos and bring that decision making. He needs a dog in him also. Doesn't have that grit that most rangas usually do
get rid of the white hair lol

Feel like he is a risk of delisting

Because i cant be bothered, can someone watch the game again and work out how many:
-Goals we conceded due to dumb unforced errors
-Goals we missed out on due to dumb unforced errors.

Reckon it'd be an easy 6 goal swing.

We really aren't far off. My biggest question marks:
-is if this gameplan can be sustained got 4 quarters
-the players positioning when we turn it over and the ease the opposition goes end to end.

The game plan/style can be maintained. It's the Richmond style, look how well it served them in their dominant period a few years ago. Its taxing but as time goes on your team will be able to run out games and start to beat teams. Mini knows the style well, he came from Richmond. Its effective, and iteats teams.
Look at Geelong....once speed and chaos was applied....first time ive seem them panic so far this season. They were on the ropes.

West Coast are on the right track.

For those lambasting Flynn, He has more hitouts to advantage than anyone else one the ground.
Though he went at 25% HTA

Stanley went at 23%
Archer went at 22%
Blicavs went at 44% (but only had 7 hitouts, 3 to Advantage)

As he bloody should, he's the only genuine ruckman out on the ground.

Stanley has never been a proper ruck and at 34 is very close to retiring, Blicavs is a tall wingman/utility doing a chop out.

Flynn should absolutely feast on them with his size and ruck craft. It was a very meh performance from him IMO. Not droppable, but not good either.

I've never seen an AFL player fall over as much as he does attempting to pickup the ball. His hangar over Gryan Miers was pretty hilarious though, big points for that. Would have tickled.

Other teams use a similar game style, but its not all go all the time, they choose when to hit the speed dial and when to slow down. I presume Mini will fine tune this as we proceed. But everyone we're drafting now has pace as a requirement. The same with skills and other components of the game, another preseason will show further improvements, then another, and we'll be flying high in the sky like a meat pie!

Yep other teams use it, they all copied Richmond (which is fine). They know that this method stands up when it matters most - Finals footy. West Coast are on the right track. Mini is doing well.

Also the game/style has evolved since the Richmond days, so if Mini is switched on he'll be adding his own tweaks to it, to make it current, better still, ahead of the game.

It's a funny game footy.

10 minutes to go, Ginbey in the votes and Jezza having a stinker

10 minutes later, Jezza in the votes and Ginbey has a bag kicked on him

Bit late to the thread and probably just repeating what others have already said. But here I go anyway:

Positives
  • Hewett and Ginbey are fantastic talents. Splitting our pick 2 to get them was a masterstroke.
  • Harley
  • Oscar Allen reminding us how good he is. Not sure I want him traded now.
  • Much improved game from Flynn.
  • Brockman is really impressing. Needs to stay in the midfield, wasted as a forward.
  • Dewar played great. Looks like he just needed a reset in the WAFL.
  • Missing Yeo, Waterman, McGovern and Cripps, but still held our own. The transfer to the new generation is almost complete.

Negatives
  • Duggan either dump-kicks it, and it ends up in opposition hands. Or tries to spot up a teammate and it ends up in opposition hands. I just don't see a role for him anymore, but how do we dump a 28yr old captain who most would expect has another 5-6 years of football ahead of him?
  • Cole adds nothing to our side. As a backup, he's good to have on the list. But I don't think he's best 23.
  • Hunt largely invisible. I think when he finally gets dropped his decline from AFL to WAFL to delisting will be swift.
  • Umpires can f*ck themselves.
    • JWilliams on his back, Geelong player pulls ball in from a meter away and plonks it on Williams chest. "Holding the ball, Geelong free". wtf?
    • Everytime Harley gets tackled "holding the ball". I get he fends off and umps see it as he had prior opportunity, but they need to be realistic on whether he actually had a chance to dispose of it. Meanwhile the bloke who doesn't try to take the game on and lets himself be tackled (or thrusts himself into the tackler to make it stick), gets a ball up.
    • The protected zone 50m penalty is absurd. Not only is the protected zone area very much subjective (what one ump calls 50m penalty, another lets it go), but in the Liam Ryan 50m penalty, he was a good 10m away from the mark AND running away from the contest. He didn't interfere. How is a 50m penalty proportionate to the crime?

Where would we be now if our game style / plan had not changed, simmo was still coach and McGovern was on the verge of forced retiring.

To counter balance that, I suppose, we'd still possibly have Barass.

Is that a positive though? He looks like a shell of himself this year, glad we didn't sign him up long term

5-6 years?? Shirley not. God help us if so. 2 years max, a year captaining the Beagles?
Or a complete footy brain transplant during preseason?
Hunt's days are numbered anyway because of his age to talent ratio. But he's not all bad, handy depth...until he's not.

My mood during the games has gone from embarrassment to frustration that we could have pinched a game like this.

I though Archer was really good in the ruck. Has good strength and able to keep his balance when wrestling and bodying his opponent. I wouldn't like to see him take too many centre bounces where he can get slammed into, but at ball ups and throw ins he provides really good contests. Could become a mobile ruck in the style of Gawn or Grundy.

The fact that Chris Scott himself said they weren't sure who to tag is a sign we are getting somewhere.

Said we are looking dangerous through the midfield.
