Port don't play wingmen - except to act as decoys.
That in itself is a crime in modern AFL football. The ball use and speed coming out of wingers is so crucial these days. Burgoyne imo is not speedy and I think he's more a HB anyways. Moraes I like in that position but like you said we use him as a decoy.

I hope Carr keeps the entire field option open and makes the wing spot relevant.

Haha no, watch him play and tell me who he reminds you of.

Hint: someone from 2018 draft.

I actually thought Daicos the way he worked and positioned himself around packs and sharked taps or ground balls.

Has good hands but that loopy buyers’ kick. Seems tough.

Listen to his teammates - even when he doesn’t have the ball, they’re calling out his name.

Kid is a gun but keen to see if against better opposition and seniors. Would love for port to pick him up.

the Sa under 18’s v allies trial game is on, tho I can’t find player numbers for Sa kids anywhere
Thoughts on the skill level overall?

Sharp wise - had some really clever plays but then didn’t find a lot of it and didn’t hurt with a number of his touches. Seemed slower and lacking acceleration, which I don’t remember being problems for him in the past? Maybe the bar is set so high now for him? Think the criticism has always been his one dimensional play - ie can he do anything other than inside mid?

Crazy that Sharp was in the mix for number one pick last year.

Can he improve his acceleration and explosiveness in a full-time professional environment?

It’s hard to get a read on where he will go.

Plenty think he is worth top ten, even top five, still. Others see him sliding. Part of this is that other players step up - particularly talls in their senior year. Worpel was a good example of someone who was big, tough and powerful in their draft year but slide a long way. Sharp is much better than Worpel but, perhaps, seen by some as having the same limitations - ie just a grunt inside type.

His fitness, agility, speed, power - haven’t really been issues in the past, just something I noticed this game. Maybe he was flat or carrying something? Maybe other players are lifting as they hit their senior draft year?

Absolutely fitness can be improved, as can strength and power. Probably won’t ever be ‘quick’ but you can make it less of a weakness.

I think he has absolutely smashed himself in the preseason and ‘overloaded’ himself, he is having the old second year blues in his draft year. He will be absolutely prime come Draft Combine time and whoever ends up with him will be pleasantly surprised.

I watched the trial, not the opening game of champs that was this weekend. haven't seen enough of these players to form much of a consideration.

Fair call.

Have a look when you get a chance.

My take was that the skills were really underwhelming. Handballs and kicks that reached their target but not in an advantageous way, ie the receiver having to adjust or break stride. Dropped marks and lots of fumbles.

Maybe I’m being harsh and their are far better judges than I.

Having watched SA vs Allies game…yeahhh.🤣

Turnovers were bad and skills were sloppy.

Early days but think Port should look at mature agers this draft.

Port will be looking at a few of our father-sons that missed out last year. Plus Watkins.

It’s difficult to gauge Marsh and Schubert’s performances when the Allies defenders were just there.

Taj Murray kicked four goals and rucked a bit. Probably isn’t tall enough to play as the number one ruck but playing as forward/ruck would be appealing to clubs looking for one.

Realistically are any of the FS from last year good enough to get drafted this year? Maybe aside from Louie Montgomery as a late selection or rookie, I’m not that keen as of now.

Same with Watkins, use a rookie pick on him if available.

Good question. We haven't seen Francou at all and I was hopeful he would step up this year.

I like Rome Burgoyne, he showed some good signs as strong, tight-checking defender last year. Again, haven't seen much of him this year, but I'm happy to go with past performance.

But they're all late picks at best.

These are the 3 from SA I will be looking at during the Champ series.

Aidan Schubert 195cm KPF (Port fan and friend of Dougie Cochrane)
Taj Murray 199cm Forward/Ruck who trained with Port during the pre-season one of the few Allies player not an NGA
Harley Barker 187cm wing (Port fan) - athletic possible Bergman replacement

I would take a look at Taj Murray the most of out the three with his ability to play as a relief ruck as a point of different. Looks nimble based on the game I watched the other day.

Schubert has the possibility of becoming that beast of a tall forward that Port badly crave. The issue is that he's a poor kick which is what I am put off by.

The 3 I am watching closely are

Harley Barker
Blake Oudshoorn-Bennier
Mitch Marsh

Is it just me or does he struggle to kick 40m+? Not to mention it looks like he has a bit of a loopy kick based on the few highlight reels I've seen.

Last thing Port needs is another tall forward with questionable kicking.

Nice list.
Blake is a good watch.

Hopefully for our sake Schubert gets that fixed and gets to our 2nd round pick.

With Georgiades, Luko and Whitlock we should be able to build a strong forward line around. Luko the lead up, Georgiades deep and Whitlock the backup ruck once he beefs up. Then who knows how Marshall will return.

Then with Pilot coming through in a few years, we don’t need to add another KPF. We have so many other holes well ahead in terms of our needs.
