VFL VFL Round 11 v Casey - Saturday 7:10pm @ Whitten Oval

Really poor standard of footy. FUMBLE, FALL OVER, DUMP KICK, HANDBALL TO STATIONARY TARGET and REPEAT.

Steele was clearly a level above all of those players. His decision making, composure and skill execution stood out!
Your posts tonight overall are unhinged.

You need a vodka tonic and a nice little lie down

Tom Mitchell is not ready for AFL going on that game
Agree. He’s not getting to the side anytime soon. Like DeMattia, his stats are misleading. Was poor really.
Would have thought these conditions would suit him.

Strange game to watch wasn't it? Like a real lack of crowd, covid sort of set up. I get it, they'll fixture us to Whitten, Port Melbourne, Ikon Park any time they want us on Channel 7, but what a shit ground.

Anyway. I can see why West hasn't played AFL yet. Got a ****ing great set of hands and usually a very reliable set shot, although tonight was tough for everyone, especially left of screen. But... If he doesn't mark it, what has he got? Jogs around like he's waiting for someone else to go and do it. Needs to watch Checkers and his ability to actually go and crunch someone in a tackle.

I also reckon the balance is a little off now. Start of the year he and Mason looked like they were both the big banana. Banana split if you will. But tonight he looked like he didn't want to get in Cox's way, in Howes way etc.

I still think he's every chance of making it but to be honest I think his few quiet weeks have been the best thing to happen to him. We as supporters have dropped our expectations of him, especially as the afl side is flying.

He might not debut this year, but he could easily be the next Jesse Hogan.

We have too many talls in our forward line and they all look a bit confused.

Great: Dean
Good: Steele, Cox
Pass: Cochrane, West
Subpar: Everyone else

Unfortunately Mitchell is done, zero chance to replace Long and is unfortunately is too slow and not effective enough in other areas to overcome this.

Really frustrated for West, Howes and to a lesser extent Riley Mason. Having a forward line with 4 key forwards is not sustainable and just means that none of the forwards get a fair crack. As someone who really rates West, it has been very frustrating the last 2 weeks, watching West not be targetted when going inside 50 and pretty much being relegated to being a crumber whenever a ball comes into the 50. Seems like the club committed to Mason cuasing him to relocate from the country and we are now to gun-shy to not play him. Unfortunately, it is now impacting the development of West, Howes and even Riley Mason himself. Something needs to change.

West/Mason/Howes is gonna take some time to connect. Definitely some teething problems. Feels like West has been thrown off it given he has to play higher up now that Howes is playing FF.
It worked fine with West and Riley, but adding Cox as a 90% forward along with Howes, West, Mason.. it's not working. Need to work on that.
Maybe if Smit if rucking, Cox should be on the bench.

Don't even want to think how they'll play it once Ash is ready to play..

Yet many on here were so upset when we didn't end up with Archer May .. 🥴

Only caught the final quarter, but skills seemed a bit poor, maybe because of the weather, but with players like Mitchell you'd expect them to use it as an opportunity to shine given their experience. It was a bit depressing. Markov put effort in. West did not seem to be interested in putting the effort in as much, saw him standing around at stoppage in the dying minutes of a close game like he'd already done his job. Looks slow and like he can't get his body moving. Jiath had some nice moments. Steele with a few good moments too.

There may be some guys tallying high numbers but very few of those numbers make a meaningful impact on the game, at least for tonight. Would have been a tough game in the wet and cold. Worried about how Titch will find his way into the seniors, but I'm sure playing VFL doesn't always compliment his form the way the higher level would. good on him for sticking to it.

I do agree we need to find a solution to how best to play all these talls. We can't have more than 2-3 on the field at the same time.
Maybe have say Cox/Howes on the bench and rotate.

Just wait til we draft Mccarthy..

Sometimes players performances are average at VFL level, but improve at AFL level…not sure if it’s the extra motivation or that some players play better when surrounded by better talent.

The coaches will know when they ready for exposure at AFL level.

Drafting Howes isnt the problem. Its the fact that we are still playing Riley Mason, who is not on Collingwood's senior list and shouldn't be prioritized its best for the team.
I don't think Howes is a problem either. Just noticed one or two on here who were disappointed when we didn't get May, were the same ones saying drafting Howes was not helping West's development.

I'm sure the coaches will work out the forward line. It's only Howes second match.

Who would have thought we'd be complaining about having too many tall forwards? 😆

True, but for mitchell its not helping him to earn a recall, and he will already struggle as we won't play both him and long in the same midfield
Whether he'll see the writing on the wall and retire on his own terms, remains to be seen. Would hate to see him not offered a contract, hence effectively delisted.

Ideally if this is Cox's last year, Next year Steene (unless he plays regularly in the afl side) will play/Mccarthy to play forward/ruck, then have West/Howes and Mason up forward. Smit in defence. Bu feels like we can't have more than 3 talls up forward at the same time. Needs to rotate from the bench.
