I'm only on Page ONE, but the two opposing views below just prove how the same things/events/player can be interpreted so differently, not just wrt to Selection but about Nicks himself.
It's also a reminder to those-who-must-be-right
--- to allow for conflicting opinions, and that
--- their choices for change have ZERO effect on what Nicks does.
Out:
Peatling (susp), Pedlar (he’s just not good and I don’t understand why anyone thinks he is)
in contrast to:
Pedlar building does some very good things.
On this same page, someone wants Laird dropped (over-the-hill); someone else wants him retained (playing well).
Ditto, Walker.

The next six pages will be interesting ...

Yeah I'm still not overly impressed with him, doesn't do enough for a winger. Curtin already better.
Apparently he's a HBF so I'd have him there over milera for a try.
Nicks will not make any even remotely odd changes for the Hawks game; too much riding on the game.
Based on previous selections, he will
--- bring Smith IN
--- make Draper sub.
Again.

Nicks, death, taxes, all predictable.

Colour me surprised.

We should though imo.

Neale has a habit of this & was not even close to being concussed.

Add to that the fact that Neale had an arm free he could cushion the impact with…

If all goes to plan, Jones will never play AFL footy again. Not even SANFL standard
+
Now let's not be stupid, hes a perfectly good SANFL player, like Murphy is, like Smith is, like Burgess is.
Jones; there's a dilemma. First round pick (#9, which was jinxed by THE BEATLES years ago :sneaky: ).

I don't know if he's been Crows-ed, or Nicks-ed. Maybe both.

To my knowledge, was recruited for his MID performances, speed, skill, footy nous and I thought he looked good, early (maybe bit scrawny, raw, but with potential to make an AFL footballer).
Wikipedia:
"Jones was projected to be picked up within the top 10 of the 2018 AFL draft. He also surprisingly finished second in the TFL's Player of the Year award with the Launceston Football Club even though he only managed to play five games for the season". That's talent, waiting to be developed.

Jones was then played out-of-position, first at half-forward, then on a wing, then half-back (** below). I don't remember how many mid-rotations Nicks used him in, ever, but he looked lost and unhappy until he muscled up a bit and had two good seasons 2023-24. You know, you play all your life as a mid, get selected based on those performances, then told, "yeah/nah, you're not a mid".
It would have been interesting to see how he developed under, say, Chris Scott, in a better side/Club.
We'll never know.
I liked the kid and thought he might make it. Doubtful now.:huh:.

(** above in Years 11 and 12, I was superfit with a huge torp from practice, practice, practice, and allowed by the Coach to roam wherever I wanted, some second ruck, so I played a kick behind the play and just launched the ball forward without much footy nous/finesse. When I moved to the Amateurs, CAMDEN, the Coach looked at my jump/leanness/fitness and declared that I was a Full-Forward, about which position I was clueless.
I was useful as a roam-anywhere, but totally shit as a FF.
Disenchanted, I gave up footy after 15 months, played Squash and Cricket instead).

I wanted the Crows to sack Nicks and give huludicidal the gig for some thoughtful and interesting suggestions,
seriously,
until this:
* Brayden Cook is still a bit of a wildcard. Hugely disappointing that he hasn’t come on yet, but the talent is enticing and perhaps he is another who could come into the frame over the final 2 months of the season if a couple of injuries strike, or if we want to maintain some aerial ability in games where Tex is not out there. I’ve said it before and and I’ll say it again - Cook is top 10 on our list in terms of raw talent.
I just don't see it. Anybody on our list can do good stuff when not under pressure, but Cook in the AFL furnace melts away to near-invisible, for mine.
That doesn’t mean he’s in our best team (he’s blatantly not) but he’s one of the very few players on our list where I wouldn’t be surprised if a trade to another club results in him becoming a good AFL player.
I agree, but it applies to several on our list.
If I was a betting man, I’d say Cook will be lucky to even play another 10 senior games for the AFC.
Tbh, on what I've seen I wouldn't want him to.

Not a selection change but I hope we put some work into our tackling this week. The defensive pressure vs Brisbane was great but too many times we let them get their arms free and get a handball away.

Call me crazy but I’d be open to giving Jones a crack in the midfield to replace Peatling. Last chance saloon stuff to see if we can get some value out of a former top 10 pick (I reckon he’s put on weight since his Lisfranc - not sure if he’s lost his high-end pace as a result).

I’ve previously been a huge Cook fan but can’t see him playing another AFL game.

That is crazy.

Last chance saloon is positions like the half forward flank, wing, key defense/third tall or shutdown small defender, not inside midfield.

15 tackles would on paper suggest a reasonable replacement for what Peatling brings. I still think he was overcoached and lost his instinctive footy.

Jesus - our tackling was exceptional for the majority of that game.

If it was deemed bad enough to give him a week off, the very least that should have happened was an HIA.

You crazy

There seems to be an obsession in these threads to bring in the next best player when there is an injury or a suspension.
No AFL club does this.

For Example, if Nick Murray is injured we should bring in Draper, move Worrell to full back, Hinge to back pocket, Cumming to half back, Soligo to the wing and Draper can play his natural position as an inside midfielder.

The reality is we will bring in an inside midfielder to replace Peatling. Edwards has been playing at half back in the SANFL and it would be unfair to the lad to bring him in and say “have a crack at playing as an inside midfielder against Hawthorn”.

It would make more sense to give Curtin a crack as an inside midfielder but he is starting to look good on the wing so I suspect that we will be reluctant to change things

The likely candidates are Murphy or Draper. My preference is Draper but Murphy is a big chance this week.

Anybody notice:
--- the SANFL Crows came back from a 38-point half-time deficit to steal a good win vs Panthers,
and
--- "Adelaide wingman Chayce Jones spent the afternoon playing as an on baller where his defensive work rate and contested ability was on full display.

Jones gave a full four quarter performance, able to limit South Adelaide’s ball movement out of the centre, while being relentless in his endeavour to win the pill, laying a game-high 15 tackles".
Jones finished with 15 disposals, one clearance and one goal..

With Peatling out, we could use a "relentless" on-baller with a high tackle count :sneaky: ,

(Also, "Edwards had 25 disposals, four marks and team-high 10 rebound 50s."
and
"Midfielder Sid Draper played his part in helping Adelaide get back into the game, having a huge second half.")

I rarely make suggestions like this, but how about:
OUT: Peatling (susp.) Smith, Pedlar
IN: Draper (starting), Jones (sub for Draper if he's gassed), Edwards... ?
The Hawks are very hard to beat down there and with some in-form fresh blood, we might just pinch it.

EDIT: then I saw this: "Best: Murphy, Cook, Sholl, Bond, Jones, Borlase" ...
Don't do it, Nicksy .

Peatling replacement
  • Edwards, not a replacement so would need to shuffle Hinge or Cumming into the midfield (same with Dowling, Bond and Nank)
  • Murphy, God no
  • Schoenberg, ship has sailed
  • Draper, yes a full game would be ideal but not sure he has done enough
  • Jones, he's tough but would he get his hands on the pill enough?
  • Taylor, neat and wouldn't be against it

My top 3 would be Edwards, Jones (still like him as he goes in hard) or Draper
