This is the guy who thinks Clayton Oliver is an elite player lol.

Nice meltdown though.

oh dear ur really going to include the gifted goal. nick was amazing to get that one. 👏 what talent lol.

it was 18 v 22 with the 4 umps.

just admit its cringe coz pies were supposed to be 'the best' team and now no dees fans rate ya
Someone will have to let Fly and the lads know a bloke on big footy doesnt rate them, they'll be devastated.

Cant win though, beat a top 4 contender by 10 goals and we are peaking too early, beat another team in their grand final for the year by a point and we're falling away and rubbish. The modern day footy fan is full of it.

OMG

I mean, seriously? Even if we're to entrain this ridiculous juxtaposition, if a full back played on a full forward and the full forward kicked 1.1, had 19 disposals, 431 metres gained, 3 score launches, 8 clearances, we'd be saying he was the greatest full forward of all time.

Well no - a 19 disposal, 1 goal game for a full forward is not 'greatest of all time' territory (but certainly a respectable game).

You've missed my point though. I highlighted I'm not commenting on this game in particular (I didn't even see it all). I was merely making the point that you don't evaluate the performance of a player given a purely defensive role on how many touches the defensive player gets. You've inadvertantly confirmed my point by discussing the impact of the "full forward" rather than emphasising the number of possessions by the "full back". That's how the role is assessed - by the level of influence the player they are matched up on has.

Wasn't criticising your view of this game in any way at all by the way - you may well be right (and the stats seem to suggest Daicos still had a reasonable impact).

Harsh on Max. Bad error at the end but game already gone. He'd well and truly kept them in it til then.
His field kicking was horrendous. He kicked into the middle of the ground at one point straight in between 4 pies players, which I think resulted in a shot on goal (?). And that final one would have given a score had Hoskin gone back for a shot. Very harsh, I agree, and his ruck work was just so good that they probably still were 3+ goals better off having him in than not, even with his errors. He gave Cameron a bath in the ruck!

lol. real smart cookie. Daicos' role was to get as much easy, useless footy as possible and Langdon's role was to stop Daicos from doing so. Langdon annihilated him.
Might want to replace your coach if he’s so fixated on stopping so much “useless footy”.

Yesterday was typical hard winter footy.
Hard slog by both teams.
Pies ahead for the whole game but just couldnt kick away at all.
Dees kept on chipping the lead back all the time.
Hard footy.
Thought the ground looked cut up and in bad shape ground looked very slow and worn out slow footy all round.
Always thought it was going to be a scrap.
If the conditions were dryer and ground better then Pies would have won by 5 goals.
But close at the end Pies by 1 point will do me and now the big breather we all need and rest up re set reload time.
Pies need to reset and regroup i think.
Have this time to work on yourself and minds off footy and we come back fresh v Saints at Marvel.
Case of take the win 4 points and move on.
Get the win and rest reset.

IN other words, I wasn't arguing that Langdon won or "gave Nick a bath" - simply that how many possessions Langdon gets is not the way to make that call. As a fellow Hawk, I'm sure you remember the first time we sent Maginness to Daicos (2023) in the middle of a huge purple patch for Daicos. Daicos had 5 possessions for the whole game (his previous season low was 25). Mitchell effectively used our 22nd best player to completely nullify the opposition's best player. The result was a bottom team unexpectedly beating the team that went on to win the flag. The fact that Maginness only had 6 possessions himself is irrelevant. He executed his role effectively (and 'won' that contest).

The fact that Daicos was injured and subbed out may have affected his game that day. Who knows

Langdon isn’t Melbourne’s 22nd best player though.

Daicos got injured (and was subbed) half way through the last quarter. Of his 5 possessions in 3.5 quarters, 2 came from free kicks given away by players other than Maginness. I think it's fair to say Maginness was effective in his role, essentially restricting Nick to 3 touches in 3.5 quarters (on route to a highly unlikely victory).

It's not a knock on Nick. He's an amazing player who was good enough to already attract a dedicated tag in just his 2nd season. I think it was also the first time at AFL level that Daicos had received the attention of a dedicated tagger so fully understandable that he was yet to work out exactly how to play through it. It's now evident he finds a way to still have an impact even when copping close attention all game, such as the example against Melbourne.
