There's obviously a combination of factors, but a couple of things I've noticed rewatching some of our poor opening quarters:

- We tend to lose balance around the contest, we'll have two or three going in to win the ball, whereas our opposition will keep players on the outside so that if we win it they can corrall, or if they win the contest they have options for a quick release. We tend to fix this up after quarter time and we're able to even up the contest

- When on defense, our players seemed to be hyper focused on being in their right structured position as opposed to reacting to the specific conditions of the game. This is probably in part due to a lot of younger players trying to learn the structures and focsuing on getting that right. The quarter time coaching seems to fix this aspect up as well.

re the first comment, I heard Luke Hodge on SEN earlier in the season talking about how when he first got to the Lions Fagan knew the young team wasnt going to win many games but to keep them motivated set them targets of winning specific contested KPIs each game.
I have been wondering if Scott is doing similar this year, as we seem to be tracking well in the differentials for a number of contested stats (centre clearances, stoppages, ground balls, post clearance contested possessions etc). It would explain why sometimes a few of our younger players get a bit over enthusiastic about entering the contested area without being mindful of their opposition player.
