Autopsy Autopsy vs Freo - ****

Honourable mention to DuckYeah who might be the Wayne Carey of horrendous takes.

Anyway, aside from the couple of list cloggers that are polluting this thread - nice to see b2b weeks where we have found a way to come back into the contest despite looking dead and buried.

Sheez, Wardlaw, Colby and FOS are going to be so fun to watch for the next 10 years ⭐

Oh shit, sorry, did we win? What I saw in the second and third quarter made me vomit in my mouth

Can we say that our midfield group as a whole aren’t good enough to go up against other A grade mids? We need a defensive mid. Our mids don’t run hard enough the other way

Haven’t read the thread yet, probably won't. 13 pages overnight is 13 too many for me to catch up on :p

I actually enjoyed last nights game. Our skills weren't up to par (when are they) overall but we competed hard. Stemmed the bleeding and worked back into the match after halftime. There appears to be a maturity within the side that hasn't been there for a long time. I'm not happy that we lost, I won't call it an honourable loss, its another game in a list of them this year that we should have bloody won!

Onto next week.

Just read mine on page 1

That sums it up

I agree we need a defensive mid, but more importantly we need our attacking mids to play defensive. Probably the best we've looked against an opponent that was putting a shift in all year - and it was on the back of LDU playing 2 ways for the most part.

No right now, but I reckon come this time next year when the Ghosting is out of their games, the sky is the limit

40 points from turnover much better than the 22 we averaged over the last 5 games.
60 inside 50's much better than the 46.2 we averaged over the last 5 games
55.1% ball in forward half much better compared to the 47.3% over the last 5 games.

We had more possessions (inc. both uncontested and contested), clearances and tackles than Freo.

We basically improved all the areas we needed to while maintaining our strengths over the last 5 games; stoppage and team defence.

It's a fairly simple game to see where we lost it: efficiency going inside 50m.

Which has been a problem for far too long.

their mids torched us once again

Excuse me?

Were we watching the same game?

Smashed them in inside 50’s, clearance, contested possession.

They won the game in a 5 minute period where they just transitioned at will.

They defended well.

We had the dominant midfield all game.

Despite Jackson’s goals resting forward,
Xerri obliterated both of them in the ruck.

Schofield must have been on a ketamine trip to think Darcy was ontop, Xerri was the #1 player on the ground and Darcy was the lowest ranked tall.

Just watching the highlights....in the first quarter Sheezel takes a tackle and instantly fires out a handball to a teammate. Only to be called HTB. What the ****. He disposed of it immediately with a legal disposal.
Sheezel was beside himself with the call and Luke Parker gesticulated at umpire. Went straight down other end for Bolton goal.
Larkey decision was horrific. This was no better and made no sense at all
The umps had multiple shit decisions that resulted in goals for Freo. I don't remember any for us.

A few bad calls that cost us goals tho.

Lighten up folks. Yes, we lost again. But it wasn't as dire as some on here are making out. Freo kicked 4 goals in 5 minutes or so when it started to bucket down and we didn't adjust to the conditions quickly enough. For the rest of the game, we outplayed them.

Our midfield is looking more cohesive by the week, against quality opposition. That was our best tackling performance in years. We had a coherent game plan and were better able to move the ball from defense. Basically, we saw evidence that we are working on our weaknesses and improving. This is good.

I think it’s masochism to say we we were better for all but five minutes and threw a win away - Freo missed more easy shots than we did and you could say their inexplicable inability to turn marks and set shots in great spots kept it closer than it should have been. We had more inside 50s and great tackling and pressure to keep it there, but fewer quality entries and it was mostly congested and under pressure from Freo, plus they killed us in the air with their contested marking in every part of the ground. The umpiring errors are another thing - really helped them and cost us, over and over.
That five minutes was what cost us the game tho. It was the only time they really dominated. WE were dominant in the second half but only put it on the scoreboard in the last.

What we really need now is a functioning forward line. We have scored above 72 points (ie 12 goals) twice since Good Friday. Before that we'd done it in four out of five games.

I cant wait until we have air superiority, someone who looks likely to take a bloody mark in our fwd line. Inb4 Finbar.

Wasted that third quarter dominance and lost it by a point.

Ended the game with 60 inside 50s for 10 goals compared to their 48 for 10 goals.
100%

Trembath and Maley are both good contested marks. All we need to do is teach them to kick straight.

We are a big chance against Carlton next week. They just lost Walsh
I think our % will cop an almighty beating over the next 3 weeks m. Carlton our best chance, but last nights game was a tough one physically m, I think we’ve got a few sore blokes out of that and depending on what happens with Carlton today, expect they’ll do a job on us, unfortunately!

We should have gone hard Matt Kennedy last off season.

Would have made a significant difference to where we are at.
Yeah would have helped. But I reckon we might be able to turn Geordie Payne into that defensive mid. He tackles alot, less than Will but unlike Will he makes alot of run down tackles outside the contest on that first or second receiver. That's where we need that defensive application imo.

I dunno if he has the pace for AFL but he's probably a bit faster than I'd have thought after last season. Maybe his time in the system is benefiting him.
