Taranto and Hopper won't be playing in the midfield when we are next contending.

So for more personally, they don't really matter in the discussion for Flanders.

One of Taranto/Hopper would have to be playing forward at all times next year, which works fine imo - Don't wanna see this 80% CBA for both of them in 2026.

Then you have Flanders, McAullife, Lalor, Smillie + Hotton and our top 3 pick as the midfield whilst we contend.

Lalor and Hotton rotating forward, Flanders can rotate anywhere.
They may not be there when we're contending again, but right now they are very important parts of the midfield that means we don't have to put all the pressure on the kids to step up. Instead they get to play the supporting roles that allows them to develop and gain experience.

When we built the midfield around Cotchin and Martin we still had experience bodies around them to take some of the punishment and allowed them to both grow into the lead roles.

Another 12-24 months of Taranto and Hopper doing the grunt work before passing the batten to the next generation is ideal as far as I'm concerned.

Is soft , HRS is a better player already and will be in the future.
Who liked it , is a dead give away that it’s a shit idea

Crazy take.

D’Ambrosio >>>>>>>>>> Ralpsmith.

Ralphsmith is rating higher than Massimo this year and by a reasonable distance too.

Let me guess. AFL player ratings

Michael Jordan Lol GIF

AFL player ratings is arrived at after a team of people watch and record every action every player does.

I would be interested to know exactly how Barnzy ratings are arrived at. 😁
Common sense

Common sense

Ok, I obviously don't know how to apply common sense to rating a player, that is why I often refer to player ratings. How exactly does common sense work in rating players? Like, what are the mechanics of it?

It seems to me the way most fans rate players is by using common nonsense.

Which club’s 2026 first (plus something say pick 25 this year) would you accept for a swap of our North pick (assume it’s #4)

I use my eyes. Massimo is an extremely high IQ and skillful player. Lethal left boot that can take on risky kicks through the corridor and wing. Racks up more of the ball too and crucial to their ball movement. Ralphsmith does not compare.

If it was picked as a proper team he was widely considered stiff not to get the wing spot over the standard "just chuck a mid into each spot"

Massimo = stiff not to make AA team
Hugo = lucky to be in the wooden spoon team

Who would you be willing to give it to? Always looking for a team that overrates themselves. Bombers, Saints, maybe Blues outside the obviously shit teams who would be more reluctant.

Bodies are no where near as big these days. Kids are also more physically capable from the day they walk in.

Massimo had a fantastic 2024 when his team was firing and the opposition didn't know much about him. We have not seen anywhere near that level from Ralphsmith yet.

But in the current season, Ralphsmith is doing better, and even moreso when you consider he is playing in a much weaker team.

Here are their stats for 2025, Hugo on the left, Massimo on the right:

Disposals - 14 v 18
Efficiency - 66% v 69%
Inside 50 - 3 v 2.9
Rebound 50 - 1.3 v 2.2(Massimo has played a little bit at Half Back)
Disposals per clanger - 5.3 v 8.5
Cotested Possessions - 5.2 v 5.2
Handball Receives - 4.4 v 8.8
Intercept Marks - 0.3 v 0.6
Goals & Behinds - 0.6 & 0.3 v 0.2 & 0.4
Goal Assists - 0.3 v 0.5
Score Involvement % - 18.8 v 18
Score Launch - 0.8 v 1.1

So to this point, this is what you are seeing that has you thinking Massimo is ahead. He gets more of the ball, albeit all through handball receives and more skewed to easier d50 ball. They are equal for contested possessions, Hugo is ahead for scoring, but Massimo ahead for score launches. Massimo is making fewer errors with the ball. Massimo is appearing more often with the ball on your TV screen.

So what is it you are not seeing that could cause Hugo to be rating higher this year?

Tackles - 2.7 v 1.8
Pressure Acts - 15 v 10.6
Spoils - 1.7 v 0.5
1%ers - 2.2 v 0.6

A perfect example of why the player ratings is better at judging player performance within a defined period than your eyes or mine. That is a huge difference in defensive acts & 1%ers.

That was last year when Massimo was riding the crest of a huge wave and Hugo was swimming against a very strong tide. Now Hugo is swimming against a slightly weaker tide, and Massimo is exposed. And this year, Hugo has been a more valuable player.

Except Massimo gets more ball, uses it better despite taking on far more dangerous kicks and has less **** ups.

You mean Massimo gets given more ball, and is involved in a lesser % of his team's scores than Hugo?

And Hugo wins as many contests, is playing in a weaker team so coming through a much harder school, and is way ahead for tackles, pressure acts, spoils and 1%ers. Coincidentally, all the things you and I do not notice most of the time. Which gives you a reasonable excuse for being wrong. 😁

Blues.

Probably makes sense for them too getting Walker for free next year.

But not sure id be that interested, need the picks for Harley ;)

It has been said of democracy it is the worst known form of government apart from all other known forms of government.

I think we can safely say the same of player ratings - terrible, but better than Meteoric Whythefukdidthatimbeciledothat Ratings, Barnzy 's Barndoor Ratings, and tigs2010thousand vision ratings. ;)
