Interesting article. 5 years is enough. Clubs need to be protected from themselves and the AFL should be concerned that if long term contracts blow out further, clubs could come running to the AFL in a decades time to allow some of the salary outside of the cap because the current club shouldnt be penalised for decisions made by people who are no longer there a decade ago.

I was at a Port game in the twilight of Clive Waterhouse’s career.
I’m in front of the bowls club, play is in the pocket in front of us. There’s a Port supporter slightly taller than me, I’m a start arse, and he’s got a busted nose and looks like he’s as sharp as a bowling ball. There’s a Sturt player, George Thring, and this bloke yells out
“You look like your mother slept with her brother!”
My mate and I look at each other and roll our eyes. Later in the game he says it again. In the third quarter Sturt kick ahead and we’ve got a solid lead, Port make a bit of a run, go deep inside 50 and Clive drops a sitter about 30 out. I yell out “time to give it away Clive, games gone past you!” And this bent nosed knuckledragger goes ape shit at me, tells me to shut up, f*** off etc etc.
I told him to watch the game and that he’s said worse. He wants to start a fight until someone steps in and intervenes.
Sturt kicks a couple more goals and the f***er never returns after 3/4 time.
Just a sample of a typical Alberton experience.

We'd tried to be inconspicuous in enemy territory but we'd both reflexively yelled out "Davies!" when he took the mark, outing ourselves a moment before the elbow, and it felt like we were in the eye of a hurricane for a few moments, copping it left and right, until the ball made it back to the centre. I was about 10. From memory Rick kicked about that many.

Warren's dad Gary was probably coaching the reserves that day.

As long as the thread title is about Tredrea, worth stating that multiple things can be true at once (mods move this post if you see fit).

1. It was absolutely ridiculous and wrong for him to be sacked in January 2022. It wasn’t based on any “science”. Most people would surely agree with that now.

2. It appears he’s had poor legal advice on a lot of fronts. Not least of which was whoever advised him to appeal when the original decision spared him the court costs.

3. The stuff he wrote in his court documents that was revealed yesterday was just complete nonsense. Was he taking the piss or was he serious? Either way, a terrible look.

Re point 2. There’s every chance he’s had good legal advice and ignored it.

The AFL are, if anything, fake concerned for the reasons specified in that piece

What they are really concerned about is long contracts limiting player movement, specifically the movement of good players to big Victorian clubs

Paying a player in silver is actually hilarious

Silver is worth about $2000 per kg. Imagine giving NWM a $10m contract so you have to ship him 5 tonnes of silver

A friend of ours has a partner with similar viewpoints, also a flat farther.

Says he is "travelling" when driving a car and that no traffic laws apply to him.

Also firmly believes banks can not legally enforce his home loan payments.

The craziest part is he lost the initial case, but then appealed, which is when the judge ordered him to pay 200k to Nine. If he'd just walked away he would've been fine.

My hubby used to work for T&R Pastoral (now Thomas Farms) in Lobethal as a maintenance fitter 18 years ago and from what he said back then, they were incredibly tight and stingy.

I doubt too much has changed. I doubt they care anywhere near as much about the AFC as they do about their own bottom dollar and their own brand.

The difference, it seems, between Geelong and other clubs is that their corporate backers genuinely care about the welfare of the club, and see it more than just an opportunity to advertise.

What is the result? Well, the owner of Cotton On seems to involve himself more than what would be a normal CEO of a company that sponsors a club because he first and foremost is a huge fan.

Who do we have? Is Darren Thomas as passionate about the Adelaide Crows as Nigel Austin is about the Geelong Cats?

Do we have a Frank Costa and a city council mayor who is the father-in-law of a South Aussie star we want to poach?

Geelong's success is a culmination of a lot of factors; luck, incredibly good management on and off the field, and wealthy passionate supporters who also happen to sponsor the club.

Is Rob Gerard still involved in the Club? I think he was a strong supporter of the Club a few years ago. Is he the type of person who could do what Costa et al do?

For the record - I don't think anyone should've been fired for not taking the Covid jab. Plenty of people have been fired for being a complete flog, though.

Not sure how relevant it was but the media were considered essential workers so Tredrea coming in and out if the TV studios unvacinated would of been an issue.

Easy to look back and say it was no big deal but at its peak there was a workplace safety issue.

Still his performance was the reason given. He was on a huge salary for someone reading the sport.

I guess in his mindset and belief system he could be using the courts to "prove a point".

Plus Koch said that the only way he would be removed from their Board is through bankruptcy.

In hindsight agree.

But..at the time the only way the world was getting back to normal was the majority being vaccinated. Strong arming people into it got us out.



I do find it amusing that I have had bare minimum vaccinations ie 2, my wife has now had 6. And she has had COVID quite a few times now. Me once, and we never isolate in our house when she gets it.


World is normal now. COVID is just treated like a bad dose of flu.

If there's a bidding war for Harley Reid to return to a big Victorian club the only thing the AFL and it's media would be "worried" about is whether they have enough sheets to change the bed after their wet dream.
