Nah we don't miss Howard or King
We are dead last for contested marks at -4.2 per average against opposition, the next worst is Sydney at -3.4 followed by WC at -2.6. So it shows that we are lacking for height at either end of the ground and we are also bottom 4 in centre clearances. So it probably shows the list build is deficient in high class midfielders and not enough key depth at either end.

Warning: Unpopular post incoming:

If everything falls over, NAS goes, TDK stays at Blues, I think we should consider a trade with Dees whereby we take Oliver off their hands but we land their first rounder? Potentially give them Steele back and get their 2nd as well.

Basically we are buying a pick. We end up with 3 picks in the top 10. NAS pick + our first and Dees first.

Oliver for Steele is even in terms of output but we get 2 picks in the process.

The team sucks next year, but we embrace a proper rebuild. 3 cracks at new top tier players.

Obviously I would rather keep NAS and get TDK, but if both fall through we have to spend money somewhere and if taking on Olivers contract nets us a top 10 pick I would do it.

EDIT: The reason I would include Steele in the trade is we cant have Oliver, Macrae and Steele in the same midfield. Somebody would have to make way. Dees get an immediate like for like replacement, and get out of the dismal contract.

Dunstan had improved the year we cut him. He was still relatively young and had had a few injury ruined seasons before that. We got impatient and then started a war with him. We started to try to move out a bunch of GOPs and pay top dollar for more GOPs in that period. Over paid for Hickey, never really made use of him then threw him away where he went on to play excellent footy at Sydney. Acres similar to bring in a running wingman where we'd never tried him ad he now is probably better than Hill.

Just so many dumb sideways moves under Lethers and Gags. Lots of short term pieces that we gave up on when there was no instant gratification. Part of our issue is a distinct lack of discipline to stay on a singular path. The development and career progression stuff was as amateur as our recruiting. Guys were swapped into different positions, dumped to the VFL left out promoted, dumped and written off constantly.

As much as I'm frustrated by Ross Lyon right now there does seem to be a real program for improvement from within.
In 2021 when he played really well Dunstan was very good at all the things he had always been really good at. I remember a turnover against Geelong in what was his last game which was the same slow, can't change what is happening but you know what is happening before it happens turnover he had been guilty of for eight seasons. Keeping Bytel over him was a mistake, but one acknowledgeable only in hindsight. Dunstan's ceiling remained the same.

As long as the system remains broken I won't stop talking about it. Our mistakes have been made. The system remains broken.

Ironic because we are yet to see the ‘other side’ of letting Membrey go

If Keeler turns out to be the prospect we hope he can be then yes, it is greener
Well we better hurry up and sign him then as he is uncontracted and both SA teams are talking to him, we have offered him a 1 year deal so far

Herald Sun reporting he’s likely to re-sign with us despite ongoing interest from SA clubs so sounds promising

Would he go to Adelaide after they rejected him at the draft?

That's your least unpopular post yet, Bill

Well welcome to the forum TK

There's publicly no money on the table at the moment for any midfielders (from what I know)

Here's three:

Melbourne - Clayton Oliver would solve a few problems with us
Gold Coast - Matt Rowell would also be a great get
Bulldogs - Bont (no brainer)

I would publically put out offers (mega offers) to these players.

Then focus our attention completely on mid fielders in the next draft and beyond
Clayton Oliver - could solve a few problems, but could also be a disaster. Would have to overpay to get him based on his recent off-field issues and his recent form. If you could guarantee his form of three years ago, sure. But no, you cannot,

Matt Rowell - it's being reported that he wants to stay at Gold Coast. Not attainable.

Marcus Bontempelli - The captain of the Bulldogs is not leaving a club who in theory can win a premiership to one that cannot in the near-future. Not attainable.

So you managed to throw up one attainable option, that would represent a bigger risk than any we are taking.

I do agree we should try to draft more quality midfielders, but we also might need to draft a gun key forward as insurance for King.

End of story. There are no bona fide attainable midfield stars available. We had our shot at a few previously and missed.

We move on. TDK - come on down.

So he agreed to our original offer and then reneged on it. No wonder we stopped talking to him.

What actually happened was that Caldwell had plenty of opportunity to sign the offer from the Saints, but his manager decided to continue to shop him.

And he did that past the time frame where we had given where we could no longer guarantee the offer because we had other trades to target.

Time ran out so we moved on to other targets.

Should have gone after both or at least contacted his management ad told them that there was no more movement on his wages. That is a horrible look and burned list management contacts.

It’s since come out that our cap was full at the end of that trade period.

We weren’t going to be able to give Caldwell a cent more.

You've argued the opposite when I said that Gags was shit and maxed our cap. You aren't consistent.

I’m under no illusions how important this off season is.

How important retaining nas is.

How important signing TDK + others are

And truthfully, how important it is to make genuinely hard calls on Marshall and Steele + potentially others.

But if the club is confident they can pull this off. Then I’ll trust my info.

If they **** this up they'll set us back years.

This delisting of Membrey was a real eye opener...

Collingwood are on the top of the later thanks in part to the Membrey recruitment. He will play for three more years at least.

Why do we always think the grass is greener on the other side.

I reckon Tim was a loss culturally but as far as on field goes he was replaced by Max Hall in a mobile high half forward role. Max looks like he's going to be a very good player long into the future. It hurts but I think it was the right move.

Nothing is impossible in my books.

Clayton Oliver, risk vs reward. I think the reward outweighs the risk at the moment.

Put a 2 in front of it and Matt Rowell could be attained.

There is certainly a Cinderella story attached to Bont, if he came to us and we did something special then he would be the greatest player of all time. To take two minnow clubs to their holy grail. I don't doubt he would be extremely hard to prise away.

St Kilda needs to sell something... and it needs to be more than just money and the club needs to find that angle.

TDK ... well I have a soft spot for Marshall being a Portland boy and I would like him to finish a one club player. He is still contracted to us and of great value to us.

I know stats dont always tell the whole story and I dont doubt Membrey has contributed well to Collingwood's scoring but comparing all their stats still comes out in our players favour. And thats in a worse side with lower quality entires.

Sharman v Membrey

Owens v Membrey

Membrey has been a mobile forward option since the days of Richo. He's rarely been a KPF in recent years. He came back inside as a marking target but he was more Max Hall than Max King.

You think players will just retire? You're lving in a fantasy world. A guy who's spent his whole career trying to play footy at the top level won't just retire because you think it makes sense list management wise.
To be fair, I don’t think any of those steps will or should happen. I was just illustrating what a "full rebuild" actually means, for the posters who whine about us having a dual narrative.
