Autopsy Autopsy vs Carlton - absolutely bashed the shit out of the Blues

There must be something to complain about.

Is Caleb Daniel still short?

Something of a sour aftertaste with the last quarter (reminded me of this game from 2010 a bit), although even then I think it was really just the last 10 minutes or so that were outright bad rather than just a bit disappointing. Given we looked like we were starting to flag a bit late in the third, it's maybe not as bad as it looks for a developing side, and as some have said here, hopefully it keeps the side grounded and focused on what they need to do to keep improving and get lapses like that out of our game completely.

Before the last quarter, though - was some absolutely excellent football to watch! Was particularly interesting to see us almost switch gears the moment we got the lead with the Larkey goal: we shifted suddenly from the defensive approach that's kept us in games since we adopted it, to something more about forcing the ball forward and applying high levels of pressure to keep it there, if not produce a score. Kind of like what we did in the 4th against Melbourne but for longer and with a bit more balance to it - a bit more like something we can sustainably produce more often. Powell at his best in both of those games probably not a coincidence, and when it works, I really like that the midfield group has players who all bring something a little different to the mix.

McKercher's uptick in form has been great to observe - still some skill errors there but the scale has firmly tipped in favour of the positive, 2 goals today welcome reward. Everything Parker contributes oozes much-needed leadership, and that's no knock on Simpkin's game today either (not huge numbers but some really good moments of the sort you'd want from the captain). Zurhaar and Curtis both creating a lot of opportunities (and Darling with some really good stuff too, especially given the wound in the first couple of minutes) makes the forward line look a lot more potent. Pink phenomenal, and with Logue back to his normal, McDonald in form, and guys like Hardeman entrenching themselves too, the backline looks stronger as well. Sheezel prominent and creative all game. Basically, winners across every line - not too many games we've played in recent seasons where that can be said.

Watching a Saturday afternoon win, played at the MCG, by a North side playing harder and more willing football than the opposition... so much about that experience that I've missed for a long time now, and something truly joyous about watching it unfold in those middle two quarters. Can't let a poor fadeout in the last spoil that.

I love that we won, but if that game went even 2 minutes longer, we were in a hell of a lot of trouble. 2 of the best quarters we've played this year, and one of the worst.
If the game went on longer is a terrible argument.

If my aunt had balls and all that.

We won because for two quarters we smacked them and then defensively we scrambled well enough to ride out the clock in the last.

We are not there yet. But we played some bloody good footy today.

There is no need to lament what we didn’t lose because of how we won.

Blew my mind! Penalised for a legitimate, within the rules, aggressive tackle. What an effing joke. He’s not allowed to tackle aggressively now even though his tackle was perfection.
Similarly, Sheez gets pinged for HTB despite launching legitimate handpass es, and on some occasions, when he isn't so much tackled as sat upon.

Are you talking about today or earlier in the year when he got 3 weeks for a textbook tackle?

He was penalised on optics today. You simply can't sling anyone anymore.

Pretty sure it wasn't a sling. Crunched him and took him to ground. The umpire heard all the air leave Saad's lungs and saw him wince ! > free kick 🤣

Pink another strong game. Let's enjoy that without the ridiculous 'has his limitations' disclaimer that always gets thrown in. Give the man his credit.

On that - we often lament Geelong plucking Brylee Magee from the Bacchus Marsh thirds and turning him into a gun, so I think we need to go the other way here and acknowledge that we scouted out Pink and picked him up for nothing and are now seeing it pay off a bit. Playing some good footy.

Our pressure from half way through the first quarter to the end of the third was fantastic. What a difference it makes when tackles actually stick. Carlton were looking over their shoulders most of the day and it lead to them being indecisive and butchering the footy.

A couple of passages of play in the second quarter were real Harlem Globetrotters sh*t - slick, decisive and structured ball movement topped off by great finishes. Just fantastic to watch.

Watching the Carlton supporters boo their team off at half time and then stream for the exits at three quarter time was very enjoyable.

They are the most physically and mentally soft team I've seen in a long time. The fact they came back in the last quarter just underlined their softness - they looked half decent once they started rolling the dice after the result was a foregone conclusion. Voss is a dead man walking; they're not playing for him. This pleases me greatly, as I really do not like Carlton.

Added bonus - after several false starts, it was the first win that my youngest (6 yo) has witnessed live. Got to pass on the footy scarf hanging out of the back window tradition on the drive home.

For a team that’s won 15 games across the last 5 seasons we’re not magically going to be an amazing 4 quarter team that blows the opposition off the park. Take comfort in the facts that the second quarter was brilliant, the third quarter very good and in the last quarter, despite letting Carlton back in the game, we didn’t implode. Yes we didn’t score but we were able to defend our lead. Still a lot of room for improvement we’re getting better each week and winning, can’t ask for much more.

Just heard some Carlton person say on the tram that they lost ‘to a sh*t team’ aha enjoy ☺️

Then someone else said Carlton is their second team… I mean, in what realm…
Media narrative tonight less than subtlety suggests the same. Hey, reminder to Carlton people. We beat you for a premiership in 1999. Arrogant entitled Carlton. They're a joke.

Watch the players faces at the siren, especially Sheezel.

They all knew if that went 2 minutes longer we would've shat the bed. At least they seem to be aware of it.
They were all out on their feet, they gave it everything, it was stressful in the stands can’t imagine the stress levels on the ground not wanting to f*ck it up. They dug deep.
