the kicker is that we could have had Sam Davidson adding pace in our midfield but decided to invest in Smith. I know who I would rather have right now. I fail to see why Smith keeps getting selected. he is captain vanilla. I want us to go hard for ed richards and his performance today is evidence that he is a gun and probably a better trade target for us than Harley Reid...

Hmmmm your have a crack at Smith but talking about 2 mids though. Smiths playing in the back half instead of Short right now.

Whilst I highly doubt that anyone would have expected a win today. We can at least ask for a bit of effort....Signs are after GWS loss we have just given up. 2 heavy defeats even with a week off in between. Whilst not coach killers at this point, won't take long for it to start adding up.
Effort was fine today (we won tackles, sprints, total distance covered, running at high speed and only lost contested ball by 8). Just completely outclassed. It happens - Dogs have had our measure for 15-years.

I’m fuming about Alger being sub, and disappointed with the execution in front of goal and overall performance, but the issue wasn’t effort.

Balta is having his worst season this year.

His head is all over the place and he just signed a 7 year contract. That contract makes a trade impossible
I wouldn’t overly worry about Balta. He’s been dealing with a decent amount of things off-field, including close to going to jail. He’ll be fine 2026 onwards when his head is right and he can concentrate on footy. If Balta was up for grabs at least half a dozen clubs would be knocking on the door even with his current contract.

Positive:
- Moving Balta onto Naughton in the last to play him into some form. Will help with stopping pies/cats winning the flag.

Negatives:
  • DONT DEBUT KIDS AS THE SUB. About the only thing that will make me angry enough to not renew a membership.
  • Selection Integrity... This is a running joke right? If the club wants to move forward it needs to check its ego and start making the changes that the performances demand.
  • Front row for the Davidson show. Yeh an outside runner isn't a need for us. Still laughing at the posters thinking he wouldn't be getting a game in that side today.
  • D50 exits.. wait, wait, wait. Ok they've setup down the line, let's kick it long to their talls. Make it make sense.
  • Goalkicking- can we not afford a goalkicking coach with all these digital bricks?

Assumed Changes:
Out- Alger
In- Short
Sub- Trainor
If Davidson was playing his uncontested style of footy in our struggling team he’d be Jack Ross and Hugo mark II. Why on earth people think he’d be having a strong season as an outside winger in our team in 2025 is pretty naive. He’d be a whipping boy for not putting his head in the hole in 12-goal drubbings.

I am aware they play different positions. all I am saying is Sam Davidson would have been very very handy today yet we went with Smith from our vfl program and I think that was a big mistake.

Our occasional practice of debuting players as the sub has to stop. Tim Livingstone I'm looking at you. Show some balls and tell Yze and Match Committee that debutants play in the 22. We did this to Cumberland in 2022 (and he didn't even get a run due to Dimma's arrogance) and did it to Kaleb Smith last year and I think he got on for something ridiculous like 10-15 minutes. In a rebuilding developing team this makes no sense. Alger's "debut" smacked of afterthought. It all seemed to come about when McAuliffe got injured on Thursday and we simply tinkered around the edges to include Alger.
Yes, a disgrace and I hate it. Every player only gets one chance to debut… one. It’s the realisation of a lifelong dream full of sacrifice and effort. There is no excuse to make them sub … none. It kills confidence, kills culture and just deflates the entire supporter base.

Unless it’s in a must-win clash and team balance calls for a debutant to be sub it should just never ever happen.

In a bottom 2 team just looking for glimmers of hope and optimism it was a deplorable decision and the club should be told the 95,000 x members are not happy about it to make sure it doesn’t happen again.

I reckon if you compare us to the rest of the league, we would do it less than most

If you're mentioning 2022 as an example then clearly it doesn't happen often. What a bizzare thing to get so angry about

It has been a bit of a frustrating year and I am well aware that this is what we will go through for another year or two yet. Pre-bye we had a relatively easy draw where we could have easily won an additional couple of games v Norf and GWS. V Bombers we were very undermanned. Swans just very disappointing. So when you don't take your chances, you then line-up for a run of games against the best teams and Yze will trot out his usual 'we can't wait to test ourselves' cliched line etc. A run of 10-12 goal spankings await and I'm not sure we will learn much at all cos we'll go ultra-conservative and have the usual failing midfield mix of Prestia, Taranto and Hopper doing most Centre Bounce attendances with occasional relief from Ross. Whilst it's easy to recall our glory days, I well recall how ordinary Shane Edwards was across his first 100 games. Remember watching him and Grigg and various others miss very gettable set shots like we saw today, so I do see a time a few years down the track when Faull clunks most of those marks that he currently gets first hands to and then calmly slots multiple goals each week. We currently make it extra hard for ourselves by dropping our heads when we miss easy chances early.
Wins mean nothing to us right now. Why are people acting like it matters if we drop games?

Just for some added perspective.

Dogs are AFL number 1 for disposal efficiency. We are 11th

Dogs AFL number 3 for clearance, we are 17th

Dogs are AFL number 1 for goals per game we are last

Dogs are AFL number 2 for inside 50s, we are last

Dogs are AFL number 2 for goal efficiency we are 15th

Long story short we were up against one of the elite sides of the comp who have had a lot of their prime movers out this year and are in the sweet spot of their football curve.
