Yeah assume O is a retirement possibility. I really hope Henry gets a run of games at the end of this year, think he has potential albeit still wouldn't be ready to be a number 1 ruck next year.

Given how long he’s been on our list and his age, if he isn’t ready to be a number 1 ruck by next year, will he ever be?

The scary thing is it sounds like Essendon are being rational and offering a contract at his actual value. Us and Adelaide seem to be making the crazy offers. Say it ain't so.
Never thought I'd see the day when we were in the same boat as Crazy Adelaide.

I dunno, Dom Ambrogio knows more about this than any of us obviously and maybe he's correct but I've got my doubts!

I'd like to think our drafting & recruitment team deserve a little bit more respect than this. Spuds to premiers in a decent timeframe. You have to get it right more than wrong for this to happen.

There’s actually a few recent examples where rucks have been on the list before breaking through and being really successful.

Goldstein, Gawn, Xerri, Draper and O’Brien (to a lesser extent). Smith still has a scope to get there, but we do need to see him get some exposure at the level sooner or later.

On Draper, I wouldn’t be overpaying either. There’s value we could look at who, arguably, are going to offer a similar output for far less money (O’Brien as has been discussed, Moyle, Sweet or Soldo, Reeves to a lesser extent and the list probably goes on). Draper has a small amount of forward craft, but isn’t worth $900k even with the cap increase (in my opinion).

Smith is still only 22 years old. Gawn and Xerri only hit their straps at 23, Cameron at 28. He was pushing for the AFL side before he got hurt. When he builds back up to that level, maybe he'll develop into a #1 with some experience.

Crows/Lions don't have to offer that though, Essendon want his new club to offer more so they get good compo, similar to West Coast with Barrass last year.
Any offer from either the Crows or us relying purely on money instead of club culture, team, goals in footy, etc is a bad offer
Barras was contracted and Hawks traded for him. Believe you possibly mean Battle instead.

I actually like Draper. I don’t believe he’s in the upper tier of ruckman, but I believe he’s a better ruck than McInerney.

On the other hand, I haven’t seen anything to date from Henry Smith, that makes me believe he’ll make it.

Essendon have a good young ruck in Nick Bryan, unfortunately did his ACL.

I think you’ll be surprised how expensive Moyle would be. And one of the Port rucks tried moving back to Victoria/St Kilda last trade period and failed their medical and St Kilda pulled out of the trade.

True. It might be a case of the Suns really wanting to keep him so they play hard ball like the Roos with Xerri a few years back when he was behind Goldstein.

That said, I still would prefer us to pursue the ‘understudy’ option. Nankervis, Darcy Cameron, Stefan Martin, Fort all in that category who did/are doing well for their new clubs.

Draper has some attributes, but to me, is nowhere near deserving of $900k when there’s less expensive (dollars wise) ways to address the need which is important given the younger players we’ll need to accommodate going forward.

"History shows us you can't overpay a ruckman"? Well explain Brodie Grundy then. Also why is that cheating scumbag Hird getting media jobs? He should be an outcast from football.
I don't mind James Hird in the footy media, he is more measured than a lot of the sensationalist click bait footy media.

FWIW I think he has paid his penance and does not deserve being cancelled, 2nd chances and redemption should be open to just about everyone.

Did you see his performance in the VFL game against Richmond?

I'm all for redemption, but should it be in our game, in such a cushy position? Maybe we should get Lance Armstrong to commentate the Tour de France and Marion Jones to commentate Olympic sprinting.

You either die a hero or live long enough to recruit Sam Draper

Personally I think it should be open to him to be in our game, it is a decision for his employer if they see him worth it, if Channel 9 got enough negative feedback from their audience then they would have a decision to make.

Same thing re Armstrong and Jones, if somebody wants to take the perceived risk and employ them go for it.

Alright, clearly not enough people agree with me then. For what it's worth I'm much more disgusted that Wayne Carey got media roles after his long history of bad behaviour.

Trade talk: Two clubs in the hunt for Draper
With Essendon reluctant to enter a bidding war for ruckman Sam Draper, they may be in danger of losing their star to the Brisbane Lions, according to Sam Edmund.
...
“The big man Sam Draper, an unrestricted free agent and he comes for nothing,” Edmund told SEN Breakfast.
“The Bombers can’t match any offers if he chooses to leave.
“He’s wrestling with an offer from Brisbane and Essendon.
“I am loathe to throw any numbers out because they get thrown around and there’s often some guess work but we can say there is a difference between the two.
“How significant depends on your definition of significant but the Lions one is better, not by a huge amount but about $100k a season better and that’s being conservative.
“Essendon offered him, by my understanding, a four-year contract to sign which he has sat on. The Bombers are firm and they are not wanting to overpay for Draper or ruckmen in general.
“They want him to stay but they’re not getting pulled into a bidding war with Brisbane. Over the course of the contract there’s about a half a million dollar difference.
“There’s a broad conversation for him to have.
Brisbane are worried about McInerney, they need someone in that window while they’re in the Premiership window.”

Did you see his performance in the VFL game against Richmond?
No, I did not. Did he towel up Nankervis?

No, I did not. Did he towel up Nankervis?
Nankervis wasn't playing, he was against Samson Ryan, Thomas Sims and Oliver Hayes-Brown. But the ruck contests were less important than him having 30 disposals, 4 tackles and kicking 3.4.

So Twomey says Essendon's offer is in the 700s per annum. If we're also offering a four year deal, half a million dollars more over the life of the contract means $125k extra per year, probably putting it in the mid 800s. If we're handing out contracts like that to Draper and Allen both, I wonder how we're affording it all. Are we getting Oscar's salary off the books through medical retirement?

You’ve been listening to Tradies.

I just looked up what that is. I’d sooner have Draper on our list on $1.2mpa than listen to a Sam McClure podcast.

We are getting special allowance as part of letting AFL have our CEO.
It's all hush money.. under covers wink wink deal

I understand why people are worried about how much we'd pay X or Y, but I have full trust the list managers know what they're doing and factoring in existing players we want to keep as well as guys who are/were already likely going/retiring.

With the Wayne Carey situation market forces eventually worked, I can not recall seeing/listening to him on footy media for quite a while.
