We never got close to the Pies offer in terms of $.
What was the gap? I can’t imagine he is on mega bucks!

It worked out well in the end and who knows for example if we would have got Morris if we still had McStay.

But McStay would be a pretty handy forward/ruck right now

Think it ended up being 100k+ a year.

They also got a job lined up for his partner, which probably helped.

Hahaha this is so good:

"I'm not gonna cop that."

It is like if your average Bigfooty poster had a platform and direct line to match committee. The facial expressions are a thing of beauty.

I know this was rumoured at the time, but it's incorrect.

Think it would have been in the 600k range (band 2 compo at the time), which was good money as this was pre the new CBA. Not a price we would want to match for a third tall (and likely our 6th or 7th best forward).

I think we would have been happy to keep him at a lower cost but he was keen for a new club and got a good deal, so good for him.

No difference to the infatuation with Carlton.

I don’t feel any joy when I laugh at the Crows capitulation. It’s just kinda funny but you otherwise want interstate sides to do ok. Carlton warms my heart with their failures and keeps me going.

Yep, I would much rather an interstate club win the flag than any Victoria club.

However I dislike the Suns and Port intensely so I'd find it difficult to watch them win a flag, Pies v Port would be the worst GF possible from my POV.🤮

My view is always:

VFL club - **** em
Interstate - support over vfl
Northern club - actively want them to do well just not against the Lions

Crows and eagles are honorary VFL imo. Plus it is just really funny when they get rorted.

With Oscar’s future being questioned, and Fort in his 30s, there has to be some backup. I think Smith with be No.1 in a few years, and Draper could be handy for the immediate few years, but it still leaves the list shallow for talls.
I’m surprised Brisbane’s isn’t looking at one of the Americans from the recent international combine. Some very athletic talls there. Worth a considering a cheap international project player as backup until the next crop of academy talls come through.

(No Mason Cox comparisons please)
We already have a raw, athletic project ruck, his name is Zane Zakostelsky.

first time i have seen this description ‘degenerative back injury’ re Oscar

Vaguely remember it being mentioned on SEN at some point a few weeks ago.

Probably should've seen recruiting a ruck becoming a priority after the delisting of Lane. Left us with only 3 players listed as rucks, then all three this year became out of form or injured.

Surely Oscar has to be going at the end of the season, otherwise I simply don't understand why we're being linked to multiple rucks and now Marshall. If Oscar could play out his contract, then 2026 would be the ideal reset year for rucks, with all three of our rucks being out of contract, as is Darcy Cameron and my personal favourite young ruck prospect, Max Ramsden. And our ability to trade for a contracted ruck is greater in 2026 too, without having to scrape together as many points as possible to match Annable.

I'd take Marshall, but St Kilda aren't going to let a good contracted player go for a packet of chips, and this is the wrong year for us to be trading anything of value.

I'm one that has given James Herd a second chance.

Then I've always thought the 2 clubs involved were lied to by Dank and what was in the supplements. Let's not forget the Cronulla Sharks in the NRL also had the same issue and their coach Shane Flanagan seems to have served no lingering hate from supporters and went back to being a head coach now at St George.

The biggest difference between Herd and Flanagan was how the clubs and the leagues handled the situation once found out. I just think both coaches agreed to something, trusting, or not thinking, or not demanding chemical testing of the substance. Once found out it was taken from their hands by the Public Relations people, the club Hierarchy, the League Administrators and so on and that's where the difference was. Herd was the scape goat he was a deer in the headlights, Flanagan was supported that a coach did not have the knowledge, nor the people under them to decide on such risky strategies, for Flanagan a mistake was a mistake and lets move on.

Just my view - Dank was some piece of work, he was trying to make the big bucks selling a 'snake oil'.

Not often disagree with you Clarkey, but this is wrong. Hird would never admit responsibility. He was coach, and in it up to his neck. Teflon pretty boy. Flanaghan admitted his fault.

Did you see his performance in the VFL game against Richmond?

I'm all for redemption, but should it be in our game, in such a cushy position? Maybe we should get Lance Armstrong to commentate the Tour de France and Marion Jones to commentate Olympic sprinting.
Perhaps the Bail Laws need an overhaul?

This is so patronising to the Saints lmao:

Gold Coast midfielder Matt Rowell ignored monster deals from Victorian clubs including St Kilda to stay at the Suns, who emerged as a serious contender for his services.

Rowell was largely uninterested in the vast sums rivals like St Kilda and other clubs were prepared to offer.
While the Saints did not lodge an official offer, it is understood that they indicated how much they might pay him, which would have been similar to the $1.7 million-per-season offers for Carlton’s Tom De Koning and GWS mid Finn Callaghan.
The Melbourne-raised midfield star signed for two seasons at the Suns in a deal announced on Thursday.

While it had been reported Rowell met with Essendon, Collingwood, Geelong and the Western Bulldogs, St Kilda was just as keen.
Rowell took the interest from St Kilda seriously given he is aware of what the club is attempting to build under Ross Lyon.

If you believe that Rowell "took the interest from St Kilda seriously," then I have a very exciting investment opportunity in a bridge to talk to you about!

The saints are offering everyone $1.7m pa. Sounds like a sustainable way to build a list. Damn you Brisbane lions.
