Jones has played some reasonable football for us in defence, and was having a decent season on the wing before doing his Achilles in 2023 (I think it was that year...). There have been occasions where he's looked like being an AFL player alongside plenty of very quiet matches.

When did he play reasonable football in defense?

His 2023 was okay, but wasn't anything spectacular.

Pedlar had 3 disposals in 65% ToG against Hawthorn but it is not obvious when he copped the corky. He had 10 disposals and 42 metres gained in our 90 point win against Sydney and kept his spot.

Murphy’s 11 disposals and 147 metres gained in 80% ToG was a typical Murphy game as a small forward. The 7 tackles were handy but there were a couple of moments when my television was in danger.

With Pedlar injured, my preference would be to play Zac Taylor but this is based on potential rather than his AFL stats this year.

The other question is our reluctance to use Sid Draper as a small forward. If we don’t think he is ready to play as a fulltime midfielder then I think playing him as a small forward in the AFL rather than a midfielder in the SANFL is preferable.
Murphy's opponent was Impey who was BOG.

A comment theme is Murphy's opponents is usually in amongst the best players on the ground as they know they don't need to worry about him.

I agree with this about Draper and same can be said about Edwards.
Look at what Fagan says about Levi Ashcroft "he has to learn to play other positions" and then backs him in to figure it out because his talent alone is good enough to make that side, as is Draper with ours. Draper learning to play another role in a winning side is nothing other than a positive, we are finally in a position where we can protect these players while they figure it out and not expect the world. Yet we just always default to a known quantity (Smith and Murphy being selected ahead of Edwards and Draper).

This is what's so incredible about Murphy as such a versatile player. He can come in as a like-for-like for dedicated midfielder Peatling, then retain his spot as a like-for-like small forward replacement for Pedlar, enabling us to keep that pesky Taylor out of the side.

And the beauty of Murphy is, you know you will be getting the same output in either role.

Murphy and Smith should not be in the side.

It is so frustrating that Smith looks to have secured his spot for the rest of the season despite the fact he should have retired end of last year, and will retire this year.

Smith is doing his usual kick in stat pad and is offering nothing that Edwards couldn't offer, with the benefit of giving games to someone who will be around in a year.

Matthew Nicks' obsession with experience is just another part of his negative, loser approach to coaching that will see this club do nothing of note.

Even now at 9-5 with Nicks' negative gameplan and negative selections missing finals is not outside the realm of possibility. While it would be good to be rid of the dickhead, I wouldn't trust the club to sack him and it would just be another wasted season.

To paraphrase the film Zoolander, I feel like I am taking crazy pills when I see Smith and Murphy in the side, with Laird already in there, and Walker doing nothing. We can perhaps get away with carrying Walker, but when you add in Smith and Murphy it gets a bit much, especially when Laird is butchering the ball and guys like Hinge and Rankine are in shit form, probably caused by our garbage, risk averse bomb it long to a contest gameplan.

They are ****ing up this season, we have a genuine shot at top 4, and they are ****ing it up.

What a bunch of tossers.

The free kicks and 50 metre penalties he gave away really boosted the side and the squad really value what he brings (they do not).

How has Schoenburg's form in the SANFL been lately? From reading bigman's training reports in the pre-season, him and Berry were the standouts in the seconds.

Thought he was shot however I feel I'd rather see him given another crack ahead of someone like Jones at this stage.

read he was going fine but not dominating. I think Nicks has put a line through his name already

He'd never previously found the football as an inside mid for us. Even at SANFL level he'd go through entire games for 6 possessions.

It's why he ended up having to play elsewhere.

This season he's getting his hands on it in the midfield though. I'd be more comfortable with giving someone like Jones another chance at AFL level than Smith.

Did Jones ever spend time in the middle from 3rd season til now?

We aren't winning the flag this year. That's a fact. If we nail the second half of the year we'll play 2 finals, if we fumble a few we'll possibly only play 1. Yes we can still miss entirely as well.

But assuming we don't fail spectacularly, what better thing to give a young group than a few finals games with zero expectations to throw everything to the wall knowing that simply playing a genuine finals game, let alone winning, will give them valuable experience for future campaigns.

But nah. Come finals time it'll be get Grandpa Tex to 300, and find spots for Smith, Laird, Crouch and Murphy.

But I bet Edwards, Taylor, Draper and Dowling will find the experience of watching those guys play finals so valuable.

Another example of Murphy/Nicks Derangement Syndrome.

Just because anti-Murphy posters stated this, it doesn’t make it TRUE.
Did you watch all or any of the match?

My impression watching the match was that Impey was playing mostly on Rachele and Pedlar and Murphy was mainly matched up on Amon. After reading the match day thread I noted which of our forwards was closest to Impey when I watched the replay and Impey gained the ball. I also checked who was the nearest Hawks defender when Murphy was in the screenshot.

Would you like to guess how many of Impey’s disposals were “On Murphy”?

Perhaps we can blame Murphy for all of Impey’s disposals when Murphy was on the bench?

There are plenty of things to complain about with Murphy without making things up.

I could live with Smith as a near permanent sub if it meant you know, we had a developing player (like Edwards) in the side taking a role and Smith was sacrificing game time to make it happen. But we're not doing that, it's just a way for Nicks to sneak an experienced player back in.

Reminds me of 2015 when we dropped Jake Lever for the Finals because we panicked and wanted "experience" in our backline with Kyle Cheney coming in.
