I’ve now got a gang of 4 nightly ringtail visitors. They chew the pomegranates then pull them off and chuck them around. Sounds like four kids with a cricket ball

Literally had this bloke on my fence last night.

No idea why, but he just stayed there, I even opened the window to have a chat with him and he didn’t move until I went to close the window. Probably had about five minutes chatting with him. I think he was bored by the end.

I just had a brush-tail possum visit my yard. Didn’t get a photo but will look out for him.

I was surprised. I know their are brush-tails in Melbourne but I’ve lived in inner suburbs since I arrived and see nothing but ringtails.

I’d assumed that your brush tails prefer areas with more native fauna seen further out and you SE dickhead suburbs attract the ringtails which have really taken to the European fauna. I know that when I lived in Canberra it was teeming with brush tails and Canberra is heavily planted with natives.

He was nice. Hope he comes back.

Can’t believe I forgot to post this guy. He literally bumped into me out the front of the house. He was so tiny though and froze from fear. I reckoned he was too young to climb home and my porch is close to the road, so I rang wildlife rescue to find out what to do (wasn’t sure if I should just leave him in case that prompted his mum to come rescue him). They said orphaned possum joeys are common in bad weather, particularly if one of twins, and he would almost certainly die if left so asked me to put him in a box with a towel and gave instructions to an animal hospital that would look after him and a wildlife volunteer would raise him until old enough to be released.

Weirdly, two days later I found another out the front (with randos taking selfies with him) so I stuffed him in another box with another towel and took him to the vet in an uber

One interesting thing I didn't expect when I moved into an estate with underground powerlines is that we get very little possum activity.

Had a bunch of Brushies appearing periodically. Their calls/cries are unmistakeable. I have been known to do a good Brushie impersonation.

I moved out to belgrave way and all my neighbours had fairy lights everywhere. I thought it was awesome, gives the street a vibe of it being a rave party. I thought it was all about aesthetics but they do it to stop the possys running rampant.

My house has no fairy lights tho so we're basically the Flinders Street station of the possums travel network. And they are bloody loud.

I used to live in Canberra with millions of brush tails.

The first thing the ACT police check when called out for reason of “intruder” is signs of possums. They can sometimes make this weird heavy breathing sound outside windows and people think they have a pervert stalker.

I know the cry you are talking about though. I think that one is maybe a mating call and as you say, unmistakable

TBF, most non Aussies say it sounds demonic. And I kind of agree. Like you go to the bush and your head is constantly on a swivel. Still, thats what makes our Fauna unique and I like it.
